    I agree about the effects of a cut or 6. But to call Paul Vunak a dojo warrior is just wrong. He used to go pick fights in the street just to see if what he was doing worked. He and his teachers were among the first people to pressure test what they were doing while everyone else was just pretending to fight. You gotta respect that about them.

Plus I actually trained in Muay Thai with Dan Inosanto as the class teacher at his academy in 2003. So... in Muay Thai, BJJ, FMA, Guru Dan is good teacher but in my opinion for knife work Sayoc is better.

      Anita Bryant actually vunak and sayoc are both good ... my former instructor went to school with and trained under the late GM bo and Mike sayoc..from Mike sayoc I got the sense that repetition under stress was the key to functionality ..a friend of mine who unfortunately had to use his training while incarcerated said his training in pekiti and sayoc saved his life although he has to modify certain things while in prison especially since his altercations were not against slashes but zipper like attacks from shanks. he has a few scars as a reminder but he made it out alive and said the basic pendulum tapping and limb destructions staved off his 3 encounters while locked up but personally iI think all systems have pros and cons and if you get a chance to train with vunak you won't be disappointed.

    Studying knife martial arts is interesting, but remember there are many disadvantages to it for self-defense:
    1. Highly unlikely that using a knife for self-defense would be legally justified.
    2. Knife is considered a deadly weapon. Brandish one, and you might have just given someone legal justification to shoot you. Gun trumps knife.
    3. Gory. High potential for infection from communicable diseases.
    Learn the knife as part of martial arts, but beware of consequences and use good judgment. Remember using it is always an absolute last resort. Always try to diffuse conflicts without resorting to violence.

      I agree with all points except the "gun trumps knife".....this is true at more than 10 feet. Anything less and you'll get your shots in and he WILL fall but not before he splits your abdomen open spilling your guts. At which point you will both be dying at the same time but yours will be a more painful, and gruesome death. I've actually known of this.

    • @contemporaryfightingarts8963
      @contemporaryfightingarts8963 10 років тому +2

      True. Dan inosanto done a experiment on the range required to draw a gun effectively against a knife and 25 feet was needed to pull a holstered gun and fire it and hit your target. A fairly fit guy can cover 6-7 meters a second whilst sprinting that's scary.

    That's a good video, using a knife wouldn't be legally justified observe the laws of your country. I've worked in a maximum Security Prison, true good knife fighters like convicts attack with a knife by surprise and quickly! In a knife fight my three rules is Run, Fly or Equalize,( use your belt, jacket or carry a sock full of pennies, chair) Exact.....! Two of my rules is beat your feet! If your in a fight look for someone reaching into their packet or caring something as they walk towards you or look for an enemy approaching you quickly. Good idea use armor I like that - Thank You

    I respect Vunak but the "you'll go into shock when you get cut on the forearm" is not true. As a former EMT I've been to a few knifings where people were cut badly and DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT. One was a clerk at a gas station that was robbed, he was stabbed multiple times in the torso and he said he couldn't feel it. after, he did, when the adrenaline wore off. But he was standing and totally lucid. Unless you hit the heart or a major artery your still in the fight. Just look at the Nicole Simpson pics, she was stabbed many, many times and a lot were defesenive wounds.

    14:32 Fault: Vunak cuts with the rear edge of his knife (normally the sharp edge is in front). But then the hook techniques at 14:45 won`t work because the opponent gets cut and will pull away his arm reflexively.
    Hooking with a dagger is impossible; maybe the knife should be a ``semi-dagger`` with the second sharp edge only at the tip area.

    Paul is wrong about the effects of a cut. In an adrenalized state you can take several cuts, as evidenced by 1000s of people with multiple defensive wounds received in knife attacks. They got multiple defensive wounds, because they kept defending.
    He then talks about the fluid dynamics of a knife attack then shows "dissect the corpse" "Hollywood" techniques.
    I take Pentecost & Fairbairn's word over Paul's. I have faith in those guys' real world experience over Paul's dojo warrior experience.

      Maybe you can put it to the test. Go knife fight a Filipino knife fighter. Let him defang the snake/your arm and if you live to tell the story, then let us know how long you lasted after your arm was cut? How many cuts was your arm able to take? Please fight a trained Filipino Knife Fighter and please let us know the answers to the questions I stated. Of course if you live to tell the story lol. Key to all this defanging the snake in reality is to cut all the way through the tendons. That's what I was told by my instructor when I studied JKD in the past. Now do you really think your arm is still able to move once your tendons are cut? Or honestly think you'll be able to grip the knife once your tendons are cut?

    Of all the Vunak bs I have seen, this is actually isnt too bad.
    Some of its really bad lol.
    None of this will work against an aggressive opportunist.
    But you don't always walk around with a knife in your hand, and the people that are going to use it against you hide it, you often don't know you are cut or stabbed until you see blood or someone tells you.
    I have been a bouncer for many years, seen lotsa crazy shit.
    And things happen so fast there is literally no time to do half the stuff in this video.

    Notice that almost none of what PV showed was done in the sparring.

    No. You don´t go "into shock after 3 sec" in a fight. A single slash to the outer side of the forearm won´t end a fight. That´s utter BS.
    1st: you need to lose a lot of blood before you go into shock.
    2nd: What is used in a clinical setting to counter shock symptoms? Adrenaline. (As if the body knew what it was doing...).
    3rd: The muscles on the outer side of the arm are the ones to open the fingers. So you can maintain a grip even if those muscles are slashed.
    Nowadays we have liveleaks and others. You can find fights where people are still going after several hits with a large machete.

    • @daldude178
      @daldude178 7 років тому

      Chris, I was exactly talking about the anatomy of the lower arm. The two main arteries supplying the hand and arm are located inside (makes sense, if you think about it). Additionally, like a said, the muscles to maintain a grip (to close your hand) are _also_ exclusively located on the inside of your lower arm. Meaning even if you have multiple slashes on the outside, severing the tendons, muscles and smaller arteries of the outside, you can _still_ maintain a grip. The overall function of your hand is fucked of course, since you can´t _open_ the hand anymore. However, you can maintain the grip on your weapon.
