- For this study, I used pastel pencil on Mingart sanded paper. This drawing took about 35 minutes at my studio in San Jose, California.
(I used Google Translate for Spanish - hope it's good enough to understand.)
I appreciate a real life demo in real time as opposed to these time lapse demos that only serve to impress and blow you away. Thank you so much for sharing, beautifully handled, lovely drawing !
At 4 minutes 43 seconds, the camera angle changes and we see the full paper.
Apart from the difficulty in viewing during those few minutes, I'd say that Mr. Nguyen has avoided all of the errors that I have noticed on other instructional videos:
He doesn't explain by speaking as he works. He works and adds text afterward when he can be articulate and clear.
The music is soft and not distracting because there is no vocal track to compete with it.
We see his model as he works.
The camera is trained on the paper in such a way that his hand doesn't obscure the place that he is working.
AND, he was thoughtful enough to offer subtitles in Spanish!
One couldn't ask for much more.
Muchísimas gracias. Es un placer verle dibujar.
Every mark made is satisfying to watch! 👍
What a beautiful portrait. It feels solid and alive at the same time. Organic. I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to say. Thanks for sharing the whole process. Spanish subtitles are really appreciated. Keep them coming.
I think it is easier to draw from life, but harder to get someone to sit. I am stunned at the exceptional sitters you get.
!! Excelente trabajo maestro, Gracias por compartir, saludos.
Excelente técnica. Admiro tú talento gracias por compartirlo espero subas más videos subtitulados en Español. Gracias!

Also, having a cheer section that evenhandedly helps you with good critiques is invaluable, they sometimes see the nuances you are unable to fathom at the moment.
Thank you for sharing your skills and what a brilliant model

Beautiful! Thank you!
Your niece is an excellent model. A sweet gentle spirit , and very beautiful.
Awesome 🌹🌹🌹
Beautiful drawing and a great demonstration. Thank you, however I feel a lesser gifted artist would create a problem for themselves, by placing the model on the same side as the drawing hand, i.e. the wrong side. This is the traditional position for a left handed artist. Over the years, I have proven time and time again, that by placing your subject on the traditional correct side, this can dramatically and often immediately, improve the students work and observation skills of any subject. This applies to any subject, not just portraiture. Thank you.
Thanks Daniel! Good tip!
I'm very curious as to why this is the case, Daniel. I do typically place my subject on the left, as I'm right handed, but I have worked the opposite way. Does it have something to do with the way we read, from left to right?
@@ghuntressart669 Hi, Thank you for your question. There are many explanations as to why 'Drawing the correct side works. First and foremost, for obtaining a clear sight of your subject without your drawing hand blocking your view, if only for a second or two. Stepping back a few feet and observing two artists working on the same portrait, one drawing the correct side and the other not, it immediately becomes apparent that the artist drawing on the wrong side has cut his view of the subject and surrounding area by up to 70%, even more important, he is imposing an unnatural twist and tension, with his head and drawing hand working in opposite directions. When drawing the correct side, the drawing hand and body are working in unison, in an open stance natural relaxed position.
Another important point, is, when drawing the correct side, there is less head and eye movement needed. Hope this helps. Enjoy your art.
@@danielmcgowan4970 Awesome explanation, Daniel! Makes perfect sense. I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond :)!
very excellent output of yours sir. .. wish i could hold my pencil till i get into that level
Wow 😮 fabulous 😋✨ work...
Amazing drawing
Que buna idea agregar el idioma español en la explicación del trabajo.
Really great demo. Music also!
Very nice! Great job!!
some words are wrong in the translations but it is very understandable!Great to see artists taking the time to do it.
Dear Cuon,do you use fixative after the drawing?
Fue una sorpresa para mí ver que por primera vez utiliza subtitulos al español !!!.Greetings from Argentina !!!
So lovely Cuong!
I want to to do that!
Pencil on paper sounds like ASMR too
so amazing, I can hardly do that in 35mins
Wow... fantastic sketching
👍👍👍👍👍😍😍😍
Wow wonderful painting super work
ک
I like this drawing♡♡good
Beautiful portrait
Basic drawing is your key talent. I always love to see your drawing part. Has many things to learn.
Thanks for the demo. I noticed that you use warm colors for drawing. Does your paper is warm or cool grey?
I wonder if on a cool grey paper, it's better to draw with warm or cool colors to describe the subject.
I also noticed that you don't use blender (or stump), is there any reason?
wow, always amazing! where did you buy Mingart paper? Im from LA! I know Blick doesnt carry. Thanks
Nice sir...
Very nice portrait
Superb sketch
Très relaxant également !
Very nice, but may I ask why you did not push the value of the hair much darker?
Paris D Black Ah, this is just a sketch, I didn’t have time to work on it. It would take at least 3 more hrs to complete as a finished drawing.
Amazing art sir
you should include a reaction of the model looking at the drawing at the end
I agree
I am trying to figure out what is making her a few years older but am stumbling.
Amazing artist + Patient Model + Soothing Music + wisdom subtitles = Masterpiece artwork
Keep doing it Sir. Hats off
May God bless you for your inspirational demo.
Merry Christmas.

Perfeito!
❤️❤️
MasyaAllah amazing.
Very good, but hair i'm crying😩
Мило. Но мне кажется,что сама девушка выглядит мягче.
Good
it has lot details
Dibujar sabe el chino pero retrato a la modelo con 20 años más.
Mẫu xinh thật anh à.
I know a lot of artists cringe at the sight/size method to portrait drawing.
I didn’t use use sight size method here. I used comparative method instead.
I’ve hardly started portrait drawing but I do know that this is not sight/ size method. As with music and many other things in life, we all have personal tastes. Even though I prefer a looser, more expressive style I really appreciate Mr Cuong,s demos - he teaches enveloping and blocking in superbly and I love that he expresses his love for drawing and especially that he encourages us to pick up a pencil and draw, and draw, and draw ........
Barbara Williams Thank you so much for your kind words.
Buetyfull
health in your hand ...
Same not copy bro
I like how you can't see what he's doing.
Am so Sorry, but that Lady is So Beautiful I cant stop staring at her ....i Apologise for my unprofessionalism 🙄
But anyways brilliant Art work though I gat issue with the Hair...should have and more darker values. But overall great Art.
I draw better
mason yang Good for you!
That's good. Let's see your portrait drawings.
I also do portraits. You short her nose. She is beautiful model. You follow too much rules when drawing. Feel her and you will make better portrait.
I agree, he is a good artist but using the sight size method takes away a deeper more interesting interpretation of the model.
Where can we see examples of YOUR artwork?
NVK_TO_BG I’m trying to teach people who need to learn, not trying to show off or anything. As my master once said, you need to learn the rules before you can break them. Thank you for your feedback anyway.
@@televisor9506 ...how wonderful to champion the artist. Still, a valid critique can come from someone who doesn't perform. Many fine books of criticism have been written about novels by people who never write novels themselves.
If only artists and performers offered critiques, many excellent observations would be lost.
the drawing does not like her. the problems are the face angles are not right. need to check closely when schecking.
Muchas gracias por subtítulos en español
