“It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update. Tomorrow is Read Across America Day. Today, I read to students at numerous schools to celebrate. This week, I also traveled to Nashville to visit with the Governor, the Comptroller, officials at the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the Department of Economic and Community Development, as well as our state legislative delegation. Thank you to everyone who took the time to meet with me.
Monday, our proposed amendments to the Growth Policy Plan, the result of the Advance Knox initiative, passed County Commission. Commission wisely decided to tie the adoption of the amendment with the approval of a new comprehensive plan. Next up, the amendments go to Knoxville City Council and then to the Town of Farragut Board of Mayor and Aldermen for ratification. Please be on the lookout for our upcoming series in honor of Women’s History month.
I was very sad to hear about the passing of Bob Booker. Mr. Booker was an author, historian, Knoxville College graduate, a military veteran, state legislator, and co-founder of the Beck Cultural Center. Booker was active in Knoxville’s Civil Rights movement, organizing sit-ins to advance desegregation. He was an expert on Knoxville’s black history, including a number of books on the subject. He will be greatly missed.
This month’s employees of the month are our Highway Department and Heavy Equipment s hop in recognition of their hard work during the recent winter storm. Please don’t forget, next Tuesday is election day for the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary & Knox County Primary Election.
