My father, Jim Stephenson, worked at Barris Kustom for quite a few years. He was the shop manager there for most of those years and I started working there with him in 1973 when I was just 14 years old. My father didn't build any of the Batmobiles, but did do a bit of work on them over the years and I got to ride in the original one with my father in the Huntington Park Christmas parade around 1973-74. That was quite a day too. My father was driving the Batmobile and I was sitting in Robin's seat, but we weren't allowed to dress up as Batman and Robin for legal reasons so it was a bit weird for spectators to see two "nobodies" driving it. The parade was being broadcast nation wide live on TV and by the time we got to where the TV cameras and bleachers were the Batmobile was overheating and it blew one of the radiator hoses while we were sitting still waiting to move into the camera range and steam was billowing out from under the car. It looked like a cool "special effect" but it was a serious problem for my father and I. We were finally waved into the the camera section and then told to wait while the announcers talked about the Batmobile for a few minutes, and just moments before they were finished the engine quit running and then they waved us on to move out of the camera section and my father told me "get out and push the car!" I was just a little dude and that car probably had a half a ton of lead on the steel body, but I jumped out and start pushing hard as I could and, lucky for me, a few other guys came running out and helped us push it out of the camera range and off to the side of the street. That was my first, and my last, appearance on nationwide TV. Hard to imagine that car being sold for $4million. That's just stunning.

There is a guy in Indiana that builds licensed Batmobiles. He built the first one just by using pictures of the original one to gauge dimensions and was spot on. He then showed it to the owners of everything Batman . They approved it and officially licensed it so he could build more. They take about 18 months to complete and cost $210,000 +

Another factoid is #4 was the only fiberglass bodied Batmobile that was actually used on the show. #1 was damaged (or broken down) while filming an episode and #4 happened to be available. The episode was "The Contaminated Cowl". #4 still has the crazy engine and the the owner drives it regularly weather permitting.

Another great video about a legend of a car, I wasn't aware that there was more than one made for filming. The thought of paying $4.6 million for a car fills me with dread, I wouldn't dare go near it or move it on the road for fear of damage lol
You didn't hear right, only number 1 was used in the show. The rest were used for promotional purposes The man who paid that much is very wealthy and this didn't faze him
Yeah, crazy amount of money! And, as I mentioned in the video, only Batmobile #1 was used for the show and movie. The other three were for promotional touring and exhibition events 😉👍
@@wurly164 Indeed you are correct, I missed that bit, I watched it again and still winced at $4.6 but in context I see what you're saying. I've got a little money nowadays, life's going good and I'll spend money on diecast models that a couple of years ago I would have winced at, it's all about context.
I recall reading an article on the Batmobile early in the shows' run, I believe in TV Guide, that gave the cars' basic history. One quote that sticks in my memory is that the engine "...sounds like a washing machine full of rocks." When grocery shopping with my wife and encountering an in store "traffic jam", after checking for clearance I always announce "bat turn" and spin the cart in place. Thanks for your detailed research and bringing back some fond memories.
Excellent video! You hit upon many facts that just a few short years ago were known by only a few. There are a handful of additional details for the curious: 1) the high-res 1955 Lincoln Futura footage was of a fiberglass replica (the world's first) that Bob Butts built and is now owned by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham; 2) the Volo Museum 1966 Batmobile replica was built by Peter Borne, not by BKI; 3) the replica shown with the autographs on the door tops was built by John Brighton, not by BKI; 4) the one-of-a-kind 1955 Lincoln Futura steering wheel was thrown away (!) and replaced with a 1958 Edsel steering wheel in third season; 5) the #1 car was driven at 70MPH for the helicopter shot in the Batman movie by stuntman Hubie Kerns; 6) the car that the Barris family currently owns (nicknamed the #2) was built by Bob Butts, and it should really be called the #6. Again, you did a great job with the video. It is obvious that you did a ton of homework to break through the 'smoke and mirrors.'
Thanks, glad you are enjoying it. Well, not next as I already touched on Corvette Summer this year, but that Trans am is indeed on my list to look into, so eventually. 😉
Yep, I just usually focus on high quality diecasts and other preassembled models as most of us don't have the time or patience for model building these days 😉
1943 batman had good stunts but i still think 1966 batman was better. The villians had more intrict plots. Also i got tierd of watching batman get knocked out in fist fights in the 1943 and 1949 series.
Very interesting , good to know the original models found good homes and are well cared for . Really enjoyed the 1960's series and loved all the Batmobile gadgets .
I thought I knew most everything about the 1966 Batmobile, but you hit on a few things that I was unaware of. Good job! I have the models you spoke of and a few more. Just received a Jazzinc 1/6 scale version and am trying to figure out how to display it. Don't worry...I'll get it done.
While far from the "best" diecast version, surely the one everyone had and remembers fondly is the Corgi one. Lots of different version were made over a long run, they're a little challenging to restore thanks to the moving parts
I still have my original corgi in the display box with Batman and Robin that I purchased when I was 12 years old in 1966. I think I paid seven dollars and some cents the last I recall was maybe at least five or six years ago it was valued at around $600 only because mine has the gold wheels with the bat symbol in it and Batman and Robin inside.
A really great job on this video. I was a big fan of the show in 1966. I have also always been a Ford guy. This is, bar none, the coolest car ever built. I want at least one of the available models, but sadly I am 67 and in minimizing mode, selling off most of my toys. I appreciate you providing ALL the facts and answering all the questions. Too many replicas claiming or inferring that theirs is the original car or one of the 4. It was like when I went to the Rock N Roll Hall of fame in August 2002 and saw The "John Lennon" army jacket/shirt and two weeks later, went to London and entered their "Hard Rock Cafe" ":Vault" where they had "The Lennon Coat".
Years ago, I was very privileged to view a private car collection. I'm a die hard Mopar fanactic. I wanted to see the Mopar cars this person had. We went and viewed the cars when I turned to the side and my jaw must-have dropped to the floor and I saw The Monkeemobile. I was looking at that in disbelief when the owner said, "You missed this." It was one of the original Batmobiles. When I left after talking with the owner and viewing this perhaps once in a lifetime experience, my head was in the clouds! After years of seeing many incredible vehicles, I once saw a Rolls Royce with an extended truck for shopping that belonged to, I believe Princess Anne of England. The owner even offered to let me sit it the drivers seat. I politely declined. I do not believe I will ever see a collection like the one with the Batmobile.
I stand corrected. I thought the Batmobile I viewed was an original. My mistake. The owner of the car I viewed never said it was an original car. Still an experience to remember.
Imagine if there was a television series as we have them today on these car building shows- that was in Barrie’s’ garage as they created concepts and builds of the iconic cars he created.

The Corgi Model Club is planning a reissue of the original Corgi Toys Batmobile, which is exciting news for those of us who missed out getting one first time around…”Atomic batteries to power..Turbines to speed!” ❤
My grandma Ramona gifted me a toy batmobile in 1974. It's a precious memory. Thank you for bringing it back for me. Gracias abuelita Ramoncita. Te amo.
Doing the 1966 Batmobile just opened up new doors for more videos covering the other Batmobiles from each of the other movies, and since we're on the topic of 60s cars, is there a Monkee-mobile video in the works?
Well, if you take a look through my older videos; I have pretty much covered all the good Batmobiles as of now and yes, the Monkee-mobile is indeed on my list to look into already. Thanks 😉👍
Very cool video. Pretty crazy if the studio was too cheap to give the car a tune-up over the course of the seasons. I could see when production first began but hard to believe it was never done throughout the years it was on. Although Hollywood also was too lazy and cheap to buy the proper rounds for the crow, so maybe not too surprising.
many thanks, this video brought back some great childhood memories, the Batmobile Black Beauty and Monkeemobile are among my favorite all time vehicles 😊
Another fun fact that about Barris Batmobile it was on display at Universal Studios in 1994 and 1995 during the construction of Terminator 2 3D. Several other Barris Hollywood vehicles were on display. I still kept the Universal Studios map with his Barris Movie And T.V. and one photo of the Batmobile.
This and other tv/movie cars earned their keep touring the world in displays and car shows. I used to keep my race car in a storage unit when I was between houses for a while. In 1987 the munsters car and the batmobile were in the unit left and right of me . Don't know if the batmobile was a replica but it definitely was drivable. It was actually pretty rough anywhere closer than about 20 feet.
The basic lines of the Lincoln Futura-based Batmobile from the belt line down served as the basis for the Ford Thunderbird for 1967. The "bat eyes" headlamps were deleted and the grille was modified with Thunderbird regalia and the mesh pattern carried over from last year's Thunderbird with the headlamps now hidden within the grille, the tail section sheared off the bat wings and got squared up. The roof was a rework of the 1961-63 Thunderbirds. The Batmobile itself was created by George Barris and was rather like a heavily-modified rework of the 1962-63 Thunderbird Sports Roadster.
@@CarStarz42 If you get a look at the 1967-71 Thunderbirds, particularly the 1967 edition, you will notice close similarities of the lower body to the Batmobile, particularly the rear fenders and the oval grille. The 1967 Thunderbird grille was also used in the 1979-71 Torino GT The basic grille and egg-crate pattern from the 1967 Thunderbird was used later on the mid-size Ford Gran Torino in a shorter length between the quad headlamps during 1972.
When it comes to "BATMAN" the series there are only two true things that come to my mind. The first one is seeing the Batmobile number 1 while the second one was Adam West playing the title role of this hit 1966 program. Please post only positive comments over here. ™ November 08, 2023 @ 8:20 am ™
The one fact that shocked me was the 1940s Batman show. They looked almost identical to the later 1960s show. The batmobile that came later was absolutely needed but the fights were very well filmed and staged. Love how George Barris created that muscly batmobile out of the Jetson's - like Futura. Also love how they sinc'ed the turbine wail to the 1960s batmobile as it drove around. Looks and sounds very convincing. Thank you for this list of facts.
@7:40 All I can really say is Wow!!! There are too many reasons to give props to this replica! I'm not a huge Batman or even comic book fan. I'm more looking at it from an attention to detail, engineering, overall finished product. Alot of hard work and I'm sure it's gets Alot of Smiles per gallon!!!
I was 4 or 5 when I was with my family at a mall in Biloxi Mississippi when the Batmobile was touring there. When they started it up inside the mall it was so loud that is scared the hell out of me.
Great Job! That was better than my Batmobile video. Thanks for the tip on the highly detailed Jada & other HW Batmobiles Im sure Wifey would like to add both of those to her already Battastic Batcave. Im going to have to bring her and some of her Batmobile collection in front of the camera soon.
My diecast collection is 1:32. Not near as much detail as the bigger models, but easier on the wallet, and doesn't take up as much room either. I had completely forgotten about the old black and white series. Now I have to find a 1:32 '39 Caddy 75 convertible to round out my Batmobiles.
Your videos just keep coming, I'm loving it!! Just letting you know that the history of Disney's The Love Bug and it's sequels have way to many Volkswagens used for tricks so that'll be a pain to do. I'm a Herbie fan and there are a lot left from the first and sequels. I'm looking forward to others you'll bring 😎👍👍💯💯
I was at a car show in Chatham, Ontario years ago and the original Batmobile was there, along with George Barris. He looked just like my uncle Herman. 3 Tuckers were there as well as the 49 Buick station wagon used in the film, "Cool Hand Luke."
Appreciate the video. Would never have guessed the short time line for creating the original TV car. That may explain its subpar paint job I noticed when recently watching an episode on MeTV.
Back in the late 80s, there was a neighbor who had a replication of a bat mobile. I'm not sure of the details, but from the street diving by his house, it looked cool.

Well, the Futura before it was converted into the Batmobile was featured in "It started with a Kiss" 1959 movie if that's what you mean 😉
Another great video about a legend of a car, I wasn't aware that there was more than one made for filming. The thought of paying $4.6 million for a car fills me with dread, I wouldn't dare go near it or move it on the road for fear of damage lol
You didn't hear right, only number 1 was used in the show. The rest were used for promotional purposes
The man who paid that much is very wealthy and this didn't faze him
Yeah, crazy amount of money! And, as I mentioned in the video, only Batmobile #1 was used for the show and movie. The other three were for promotional touring and exhibition events 😉👍
Indeed, as mentioned in the video 😉
@@wurly164 Indeed you are correct, I missed that bit, I watched it again and still winced at $4.6 but in context I see what you're saying. I've got a little money nowadays, life's going good and I'll spend money on diecast models that a couple of years ago I would have winced at, it's all about context.
@graemew7001 Today I brought home, one of my favorite cars, a 1965 cadillac coupe.
Indeed, lol.
I was 10 years old in 1966, loved the show. I am an older car Guy now and dang it I still want a batmobile.
😉👍
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for all the extra details 😉👍
Fantastic video and thanks for creating this!
You're welcome and glad you enjoyed it😉👍
Cool looking car.
This channel is awesome.
Up next, Black Trans Am from corvette summer !!
Thanks, glad you are enjoying it. Well, not next as I already touched on Corvette Summer this year, but that Trans am is indeed on my list to look into, so eventually. 😉
Thanks. Keep up the great work.@@CarStarz42
Cool.👍 Polar lights makes 1/25 scale plastic batmobile, and a 1/25 scale snap kit with figures.
Yep, I just usually focus on high quality diecasts and other preassembled models as most of us don't have the time or patience for model building these days 😉
@@CarStarz42 That is your problem. Those of us who do like the Polar Lights kit.
@@tomt373 Lack of time for former hobbies are a problem for many of us indeed.
Just to let you know, you left out the Corgi model, which at one point came packaged with a Bat boat on a trailer….
Can't catch them all I suppose 😉

True
Just an observation
I am 61. Great memories. Awesome vídeo. Amazing job.
Greetings from Brazi.
😉👍
1943 batman had good stunts but i still think 1966 batman was better. The villians had more intrict plots. Also i got tierd of watching batman get knocked out in fist fights in the 1943 and 1949 series.
Lol, true enough 😉
That’s my car !!!
😉
I saw one of these at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in 1970. Thanks for sharing.
Cool😉👍
Very interesting , good to know the original models found good homes and are well cared for . Really enjoyed the 1960's series and loved all the Batmobile gadgets .
😉👍
I thought I knew most everything about the 1966 Batmobile, but you hit on a few things that I was unaware of. Good job! I have the models you spoke of and a few more. Just received a Jazzinc 1/6 scale version and am trying to figure out how to display it. Don't worry...I'll get it done.
Thanks and that's awesome! 😉👍
Great video. Brought back incredible memories.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it😉👍
Outstanding video!!!! Just found you channel, subscribed!!
Thanks and welcome. Glad to hear you are enjoying the channel so far 😉👍
While far from the "best" diecast version, surely the one everyone had and remembers fondly is the Corgi one. Lots of different version were made over a long run, they're a little challenging to restore thanks to the moving parts
Indeed 😉
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. Indeed a true legend of a car! 😉👍
I consider this Batmobile the coolest out of all of them.
😉👍
For quite a few years I assumed the batmobile was a 66 Pontiac Catalina. LOL
Understandable
🏆Batmobile 💥🍀got R done 😆✌️
😉👍
😉👍
Still the coolest Batmobile of them all. Love it! I want one.
😉👍
The best BATMOBILE EVER!! I met George Barris a few years ago , at one of his car shows in California. What a cool guy!!! We miss you George!!!❤❤❤
Cool and indeed 🙂👍
Imagine if there was a television series as we have them today on these car building shows- that was in Barrie’s’ garage as they created concepts and builds of the iconic cars he created.
Would be interesting for sure 😉👍
'Holly CarStarz' how did you manage to get the batmoble it's impossible without your secret password my buddy this is great achievement for yourself with 50th video showing up on nighttime as most appropriate choice for me to know that batman is roaming gotham right now in the batmoble so that you bro for not letting penguin and joker get there hands on it i got to go see you later bye now. P.S Hey CarStarz you know next week is christine video so yeah we are ready for best one yet😱😱.
Lol, thanks and indeed I intend to do my best and find all I can for Christine next week! Maximum effort 😉👍
@CarStarz42 thanks bro and have a nice weekend bye now.
Fascinating video to watch, that ‘classic’ Batmobile has always been my favourite out of them all.
The Corgi Model Club is planning a reissue of the original Corgi Toys Batmobile, which is exciting news for those of us who missed out getting one first time around…”Atomic batteries to power..Turbines to speed!” ❤
Cool 😉👍
The original Batmobile will always be my favorite. Of course, I grew up watching Batman.
😉👍
Different steering wheel on #1 compared to #2
Yep, several small differences from #1 and the other three built later; I only mentioned a few, but there are many.
@@CarStarz42 Great video, thank you for all the time & effort you put in. Look forward to more,
My grandma Ramona gifted me a toy batmobile in 1974. It's a precious memory. Thank you for bringing it back for me.
Gracias abuelita Ramoncita. Te amo.
Cool and you're very welcome 👍
Do a youtube of the Magnum PI Ferrari 308.
That one is on my list to look into already as well as hundreds of others. Thanks 😉👍
TV and Movie cars do often get the shaft when it comes to being cared for unfortunately.
Very detailed study! I never knew of the 40s Batman. Need to look it up now.
Glad you enjoyed it and learned something new as well 😉👍
funny i see it on sometimes on weekend mornings possibly the tcm channel i always click to c it thinking its the 66-68 series
The closest I've come to owning an accurate 1966 Batmobile was acquiring JazzInc's 1966 1/6 Batmobile. Glad you mentioned JazzInc Dioramas!
Nice, yeah if I had the money and space, I'd love to have all of the awesome colossal models that guy makes 😉👍
Great video, and great channel. Thank you. ❤
Thanks much and glad you enjoy it 😉👍
Great video batman and the batmobile were a big part of my childhood! A lot of memories Thank you!
You're very welcome and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
Great video. A BIG thumbs up Sir. Well done.
Thanks much and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
many thanks, this video brought back some great childhood memories, the Batmobile Black Beauty and Monkeemobile are among my favorite all time vehicles 😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
I had no idea there was a Batman show before the 1960s! I was always a super fan of the Batmobile! Thanks for this!
Indeed 😉👍
Another fun fact that about Barris Batmobile it was on display at Universal Studios in 1994 and 1995 during the construction of Terminator 2 3D. Several other Barris Hollywood vehicles were on display. I still kept the Universal Studios map with his Barris Movie And T.V. and one photo of the Batmobile.
Cool 😉👍
That was fun thanks Never missed a show as a kid always come on at 3:00pm every day 😊
Cool and you're very welcome 😉👍
This and other tv/movie cars earned their keep touring the world in displays and car shows. I used to keep my race car in a storage unit when I was between houses for a while. In 1987 the munsters car and the batmobile were in the unit left and right of me . Don't know if the batmobile was a replica but it definitely was drivable. It was actually pretty rough anywhere closer than about 20 feet.
Cool😉👍
Pretty much 😉
@@CarStarz42 If you get a look at the 1967-71 Thunderbirds, particularly the 1967 edition, you will notice close similarities of the lower body to the Batmobile, particularly the rear fenders and the oval grille. The 1967 Thunderbird grille was also used in the 1979-71 Torino GT The basic grille and egg-crate pattern from the 1967 Thunderbird was used later on the mid-size Ford Gran Torino in a shorter length between the quad headlamps during 1972.
Holy smokes batman ,another great feature.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
Nice job, very interesting 👍
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it 😉👍
When it comes to "BATMAN" the series there are only two true things that come to my mind. The first one is seeing the Batmobile number 1 while the second one was Adam West playing the title role of this hit 1966 program.

I agree with commenor Scott. In my world 60's series is the one and only REAL BATMAN and ROBIN. ❤
😉👍
The one fact that shocked me was the 1940s Batman show. They looked almost identical to the later 1960s show. The batmobile that came later was absolutely needed but the fights were very well filmed and staged. Love how George Barris created that muscly batmobile out of the Jetson's - like Futura. Also love how they sinc'ed the turbine wail to the 1960s batmobile as it drove around. Looks and sounds very convincing. Thank you for this list of facts.
You're very welcome. Glad to hear you both learned from and enjoyed the video 😉👍
@@CarStarz42 absolutely!
Indeed wild creations! 😉👍
Hi again
Howdy 😁
I was 4 or 5 when I was with my family at a mall in Biloxi Mississippi when the Batmobile was touring there. When they started it up inside the mall it was so loud that is scared the hell out of me.
Very cool 😉👍
Great Job! That was better than my Batmobile video. Thanks for the tip on the highly detailed Jada & other HW Batmobiles Im sure Wifey would like to add both of those to her already Battastic Batcave. Im going to have to bring her and some of her Batmobile collection in front of the camera soon.
Thanks and that sounds cool indeed 😉👍
My diecast collection is 1:32. Not near as much detail as the bigger models, but easier on the wallet, and doesn't take up as much room either. I had completely forgotten about the old black and white series. Now I have to find a 1:32 '39 Caddy 75 convertible to round out my Batmobiles.
Indeed 😉👍
Your videos just keep coming, I'm loving it!!
Just letting you know that the history of Disney's The Love Bug and it's sequels have way to many Volkswagens used for tricks so that'll be a pain to do. I'm a Herbie fan and there are a lot left from the first and sequels.
I'm looking forward to others you'll bring 😎👍👍💯💯
Glad you are enjoying the channel and I do have that one on my list to look into at some point. Thanks 😉👍
Excellent!! 😎👍👍
I was at a car show in Chatham, Ontario years ago and the original Batmobile was there, along with George Barris. He looked just like my uncle Herman. 3 Tuckers were there as well as the 49 Buick station wagon used in the film, "Cool Hand Luke."
Cool 😉👍
Appreciate the video. Would never have guessed the short time line for creating the original TV car. That may explain its subpar paint job I noticed when recently watching an episode on MeTV.
Indeed.
Back in the late 80s, there was a neighbor who had a replication of a bat mobile. I'm not sure of the details, but from the street diving by his house, it looked cool.
Cool 😉👍
