I'm no bird owner but i just love it when i see birds in general preening each other. It is really adorable and also has a function. I also want to say thank you for enlightening me about blood feathers as i do not know what to look out for if a blood feather is broken.
Hi, nice to see you here. Glad you learned about the blood feather as one day you may own a bird or can help out someone else with a broken blood feather.
@@aysel_9955 before the officially molt they start losing fluffy soft feathers and they start itching and preening alot. They also shake off alot more dust/dander.
Perfect timing; I have 4 budgies and at least 2 of them are molting right now. Glad that you described molting similar to shedding, I see lots of speckle flecks, as well as the flight feathers, tail feathers, and down feathers. I like how you pointed out the pin feathers; I notice the birds pecking at the other's head. You are right on in describing them as grumpy/lethargic and puffy due to the itching; I am going to be misting them with spray bottle water twice a day, since they don't do baths (they avoid the water in a dish). I got the 4 budgies one year ago and they started molting a couple weeks later. They were molting again in the fall. It seems like the fall molt has extended; I have been seeing feathers regularly for some time. They have been eating well and their feathers and colors look good, so I don't feel they have a nutrient deficiency. Could it be that during one month, one budgie might be molting and the others have not started?, thus, having 4 budgies, someone might always be molting. With budgies, how long should each molt last?
Yes, they can be molting at different times so it looks like they are always molting. Molting can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months and longer for large birds.
This was a great video. I really learned a lot. It was very frustrating these past couple months with my budgies showing grumpiness, lethargy, constantly itching and losing feathers, only to realize now that this has been an extended molt. Their appetites have been good and colors are nice. I have been misting them with a spray bottle and they seem to be tolerating it well; they don't seem to be squawking at me like they ordinarily would do anytime I would go near them. Also enjoyed watching your lovely birds; I recognize many of your budgies now (always good to see Jack Sparrow in the video). Seeing Pickles and Nugget preening is wonderful and your cockatiels Jingles and Willow show all of their beauty. @@Loveofpets

Do budgies moly a lot, of had mine for 3-4 years and I remember them mooting a lot. (I begin to look closer now) Recently, they seem to preen and scratch their heads a lot. One has pin feathers so I’m assuming their having a jolting week or something. Thanks for addressing the dandruff stuff, because I really got worried since 3 days ago one of my budgies was preening himself on my knee and I was wearing black pants. So when he flew off I saw white stuff, so I freaked out. I give them baths daily because of the molting
Hi, that would be great to talk about. Generally what I meant is there should be no bald spots visually. Thanks for watching and good luck with your studying. Is it an online course? I am interested, thanks.

I recently had the idea to collect all feathers i can find from my cockatiels first moulting and gather them by category in a little picture frame along with a picture of both for decoration ♡♡
My 15 yr old cockatiel just went thru a heavy molt. Lots of feathers.. his appetite has changed.. not interested in his millet right now and fluffs up a lot..sounds like molt condition?
Do you think my cocktail is alright ?I know it’s 2021 but my bird is dropping a lot of feathers she usually stays in her cage then when I went down stairs I saw her with a bunch of feathers on the ground then she started to scratch her wing none-stop.There where feathers everywhere.
Hey , i have a cockatiel ,and he lost his flight feathers on one wing , and im pretty sure he did it himself cause hes always cleaning himself nowadays ,and he also rubs his face on his perch , please tell me if its normal
be sure to give your bird plenty of time to dry out before bed. so don't let them bathe late in the day. Please can I ask re moulting. I had to take out a feather last moult coz its feather came in sideways litterally 90 degrees to the wing. it was impossible to get the casing from the pin off, even after weeks to I think it was just a wrong feather. it was driving my canary crazy coz he was trying to pull at it but couldn't get it. he had had other deformed feathers that he broke off, so I removed this feather I must have caught another coz it bleed but I bathed it in salt water to sterilise and used styptic pencil on it till it stopped bleeding. its happening again this year. that one feather is coming in bent. is it still ok to remove it once its fully grown feather
My Cockateil had a night fright last night, she rammed into the side of her cage before I got to her and broke a feather. She doesn’t have any other injuries, I made her walk to me after calming her down and she flapped her wings a few times and fluttered to me (her wings are clipped but they won’t be after she molts) it’s a tail feather that she can’t quite reach. What should I do? It’s broken about half way down.
Can u tell me what can i give my bird for protein, are coriander and spinach good, what else can i give them, also i heard that they have a calcium deficiency during molting, so can i give them a calcium block or a cuttle bone?
Offer legumes such as lentil, garbanzo, adzuki or mung for protein. You could offer cooked salmon or trout, tuna, chicken, chicken bones, quinoa and occasional egg dishes. Also brown rice, wild rice or quinoa. Cuttle bone is a great source of calcium.
My both cockatiels are continously preening their feathers. I don't know whether it is molting or not. They shred a lot of feathers a day. Is it okay for a bird to shred a lot of feathers a day? And also my female cockateil often scream when she clean her feather. Can you please guide me what to do. Any special food to give during this time :)
Yes they can molt a few feathers a day. When they molt it hurts so that could be why she cries out. Offer a commercial egg food during molting. If there are bald spots it could be another issue.
Hi, it depends on how bad your allergies are. It's best not to keep your budgie in your bedroom and make sure to have an air purifier near the budgie. You can also mist the newspaper when changing the paper so the dust does not stir up. Also wear a mask when cleaning the cage. Clean cage daily so that no dust can accumulate.
Hi, and many thanks for helping us, I'm going to help a budgie that could walk normal and couldn't fly, i think he had a very bad owner, i have find out he has 5 feature in both wing that aren't normal, one of them was broken that i used your Video to remove it, but these 4 doesn't broken, just they are blue in the middle, and also don't grow complete, what can I do for this birds?
Hi, leave the feathers. When feathers grow they have blood in them. It could look blue or red. Only pull a broken feather that is bleeding if it doesn't clot by itself. If the bird has continuous feathers problems it could be PBFD ( beak and feather disease) or other diseases. Bring your bird to an avian vet for viral testing.
See I have a rescued sparrow and she lost her tail during a molt a year ago and it hasn’t grown back and because she’s skiddish, I can never grab her to check her tail though I know it bleeds from time to tome
Hello I have a baby budgie I’ve had her for about three months now and I just noticed a bald spot on her belly /chest area but no where else is it just moulting or should I get a vet ?
My cockatiel will not touch anything else other than seed. He’s a seed Hound. I keep hoping he will eat fruit etc, but he acts like it’s out to get him and runs away and won’t come back to his dish. I’ve been trying for 15 years.. any ideas?
Hi! I have a question...my Indian ringneck seems like she is molting and when she is preening she yells a bit every few minutes .. have you experienced this with yours?
Hi, pin feathers can hurt a little bit and when they preen it can hurt them and that's why she yells. Keep an eye on her for any follicle issues or growths etc.
It's very sensitive there. If the sheath is ready to come off you can or just give your bird a massage there. If it hurts leave it be as it will come off eventually
My canary has broken blood feather on tail but it’s not bleeding now.. can I leave it alone? Also, he loves his bath and has dried blood on his tail, can I let him bathe ? He’s alert , happy , eating .. can’t find any avian vets near me and do not want to remove it myself and stress him out.
I'm just wondering... why do you keep your birds feathers? I know I don't have to keep mine, but I just wanna know why you do it, so maybe I can find a good reason to keep my cockatiel's feathers? Is there a good use for them or is it just a common thing to do?
I only have one cockatiel so I have to help him a bit with the pin feathers on his head especially on his cute little crest feathers! Can they get blood feathers on their crest?
Hi, molting should not cause feather loss, however some species go through a heavy molt like the Ringneck and they may possibly have bald areas but it's highly unlikely. Budgies sometimes loose a few feathers around their ceres. It's a problem if the feathers do not grow back or the bird continues to get bald spots or the skin is irritated. It's best to seek out an avian vet if that's the issue.
hi thank you for such an informative video, I was just wondering what if my bird sheds a feather that is already cut at the top, exposing the blood when u squeeze it.
My birds feathers came out and there was a bit of blood not a lot just a dot but i was still really worried what do i do!!!! It was a full feather on his wing?????
I got my Cockatiel about two weeks ago he’s 7 months old only feathers I see falling off are downy feathers is he molting or is he plucking or something please helpppp 😭
Hi, its best to leave the feather. Your bird may trim the tail by preening. It will fall out when molting. If it bothers him then you can cut it where it's broken. If you see blood flowing through that feather then avoid cutting it as it may bleed.
I love how all your videos have been helping me, I was wondering how Marbles molted. My moustache parakeet is only 4 months old and I believe is starting his first molt. He only has a couple pins near his beak but is pruning himself alot and very full on at times but is only loosing a couple small feathers at a time. I've also noted that he's not eating his veg as much as he normally does. Any tips would be great as I'm finding it hard to find helpful advice on moustache parakeets. Thanks 😊
Hi, Marbles lost a few feathers at a time also and was very grumpy. She was very itchy and always biting herself. Give lots of showers to help with the itch and keep offering the food. Offer different foods.
I got two parrotlets 10 days ago from a guy. one of them is bald on head. the guy said it's because of change of season.there were few feathers growing on head but the bald one keep asking the other one to scratch his head and then the new feathers again fall down because of scratching. is it natural? I would like to know how I can accelerate the regrowth of his head feathers. any ideas?
Is the other bird plucking his head? If so then separate them and see if regrows. It could also be a nutritional deficiency, mites, bacterial infection, fungus or beak and feather disease etc. It's best to go to an avian vet to rule out disease or parasites.
few Questions. I just acquired a Turquoise Green check Conure. He eats pellets and fruit and veg mix. I try to give him a sunflower seed or nutriberry but he doesn't know how to open them? also He was clipped at the store and it was not done properly (he falls dtriaght down ) and damaged his tail feathers. when will it all grow back? Lastly, He likes to come in the shower and sit in there while i shower dir 3 minutes. or so. is this okay? I remove him before I shampoo my hair :)
Congratulations on your new Conure! How old is he? Young babies may have a hard time to open sun flower seeds, he will learn. Use the sunflower seeds for treats only as they are fattening. If he is a baby, they molt starting at 10 weeks to 6 months. It's sad that his wings were clipped and especially if they we're done wrong. I hope he molts soon. He is fine in the shower as long as he does not get soap on him.
@@Loveofpets Not sure of the exact age but he was banded in 2018 and he was the 90th band so likely born in march or April so hes either 1 year or just under. He doesnt seem to understand seeds are also food since he was on strictly pellets and fruit and veg. Does he NEED seeds or can it just be pellets and fruit and veggies? His favorite is Sweet potato and apples. he also gets spinach, butternut squash , a couple berries (strawberries or blueberries) and Papaya . I also give him small piece of pecan and I will be cooking him some brown rice so he can have a few of that too. He loves the shower and getting head scratches. I love your channel BtW. as a first time parrot owner it's very helpful.
He may be used to eating them. Keep trying but for treats or reward only. I believe some seed is needed but just a small amount. I feed my birds both. Glad you enjoy my channel

@@Loveofpets thank you so much, you are brilliant
My birds are very chilled and don’t fly a lot but is there still a chance for them to get a broken blood feather because it’s their first time molting
Hi, it's hard to say. Did you get the baby like that?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My cockatiel will not touch anything else other than seed. He’s a seed Hound. I keep hoping he will eat fruit etc, but he acts like it’s out to get him and runs away and won’t come back to his dish. I’ve been trying for 15 years.. any ideas?
My birds love me to preen the sheaths off!!!
Can I pull out the spikes from the neck area ? He only got one spike
Hi. The feather has probably clotted. I would wait 2 or 3 days to bathe as the water will make the clot softer and it may bleed.
I'm just wondering... why do you keep your birds feathers? I know I don't have to keep mine, but I just wanna know why you do it, so maybe I can find a good reason to keep my cockatiel's feathers? Is there a good use for them or is it just a common thing to do?
I only kept them for the video, otherwise they go in the garbage. Some people like to keep some feathers especially the first molt as a memory.
I only have one cockatiel so I have to help him a bit with the pin feathers on his head especially on his cute little crest feathers! Can they get blood feathers on their crest?
Yes they can. All new feathers have blood in them and if the crest feathers break they can bleed.
Love of Pets Oh okay, I’ll make sure to look out for those as well!
feathers skins areas treatments
THANKS FROM IRAQ❤Does feather loss cause baldness in birds? A bird's head near the beak has become completely devoid of feathers. Is this normal?
Hi, molting should not cause feather loss, however some species go through a heavy molt like the Ringneck and they may possibly have bald areas but it's highly unlikely. Budgies sometimes loose a few feathers around their ceres. It's a problem if the feathers do not grow back or the bird continues to get bald spots or the skin is irritated. It's best to seek out an avian vet if that's the issue.
@@Loveofpets Thank you very much
My female cockatiel is molting. Is it normal for them to preen and come up with a mouth full of feathers? Feathers are everywhere.
Yes, when they preen feathers may be in their mouth.
hi thank you for such an informative video, I was just wondering what if my bird sheds a feather that is already cut at the top, exposing the blood when u squeeze it.
Hi. I new one will grow back.
@@Loveofpets oh thank god, tysm :)
Is it bad if my rosella parrot has a lot of "pin" (srry if i writed it bad) feathers?? I'm so saddd😭♥️🥺✨🦜
Hi, it's not bad to have pin feathers, it's good as he is growing new feathers which is normal. They will molt once or twice a year.
My birds feathers came out and there was a bit of blood not a lot just a dot but i was still really worried what do i do!!!! It was a full feather on his wing?????
He should be okay if the whole feathers came out.
I got my Cockatiel about two weeks ago he’s 7 months old only feathers I see falling off are downy feathers is he molting or is he plucking or something please helpppp 😭
My ring neck has a broken tail feather it's not bleeding should I still take it out?
Hi
Hi
few Questions.
Is there any blood spots or blood when they are molting? I’ve a cockatiel 🥲
Ive only had my indian ringneck for a year and im scared for if he gets a blood feather coz theirs no avian vet near me and idk what to do
Hi, this video may help you. I show how I took care of a broken blood feather with my budgie

Cockatiels are so cute and so sweet, but they seem a bit more high maintenance than some other birds with the night frights and the dust
Unfortunately they are dusty and prone to night frights compared to some other birds
