I’m Brazilian married to an American and my husband ALWAYS cry when he listens to La Belle De Jour, which happens to be my username here on UA-cam!!! I introduced this song to him and he absolutely loves it ❤
He made this music after meeting Jacqueline Bisset in Paris. He did not recognize her and when she asked hi what hw did, he said "I am a poet". And she said: "So write a poem for me" and he got a napkin and wrote "White Poetry". Only after he left the bar, he was told who she was. He regreted being a bit arrogant with her,and tryed her o come back but she had left. Years later he remembered the incident and decided to wrote this song. But he got her name qrong and end up talking about Belle de Jour, which is a movie with Catherine Deneuve. So, he got everyhting wrong, but still thw song is his greatest hit and a classic.
OMG! This was all over Brasilian Radio when I spent 6 months there in 1992/93 . Had percussion lessions with his drummer, of course was at his shows in Recife and Olinda. This man is a legend in Brazils Music history. Got him to know also. Great memories, maybe the best time in my life, very emotional!

Brazilian music is a wonderfully deep rabbit hole to explore with many different styles and influences. If you take this journey I think you will find as a vocalist that the Portuguese language does many interesting things with the tongue that do not commonly happen in the English language. Things that can make the singing feel very silky, seductive, slippery and beautiful at times. It is a wonderfully diverse country, and it's music is likewise wonderfully diverse, soulful, sad, joyful, magical and inspiring - frequently all of this and more, all at once in a single moment.

Alceu Valença is a Brazilian national icon. He is from the northeast of Brazil and his accent is very typical of the northeast, especially in the sound of the letter "D", which, to my ears as a Brazilian from the southeast, is admirably different and beautiful!
Idk, but also, I think the sound of the letter “D” is even more specific/accentuated due to the Recife accent (the capital of Pernambuco state, where Alceu is from)
@@imvitordiniz i think Pernambuco, paraíba and rio grande do norte have the same pronounciation to D's and T's, maybe the only ones in northeast who pronounce like that.

Alceu Valença is just...something else. I'm a huge fan of his work and went to see him perform live many times. If you're interested, look for the album "Valencianas", in wich he sings with Ouro Preto Orchestra. He made the maestro smile many times during the performance. Everybody there was just having fun playing music.

This song was a tribute from the singer to the French actress Brigitte Bardot when he met her on a "Sunday afternoon at the Boa Viagem Beach", a very beautiful beach in the northeast of Brazil.

Oh, I just discovered you, Beth!!! I'm loving what you're doing with Brazilian music. I'm Brazilian!!! You need to listen to Anunciação by Alceu Valença. It's a classic that's been celebrated all over Brazil. The song is mystical and tells the story of someone who awaits the arrival of their lover and through various signs, in nature, in the weather, in things, discovers that this person who was so far away is returning. But at the same time, the song tells of a spirit from Candomblé (an Afro-Brazilian religion) that comes to possess the body of a priest who's been prepared for a sacred rite. The song has rock mixed with a lot of percussion from the typical music of the Brazilian northeast.
One Sunday, Alceu was on the beach of Boa Viagem, in Recife. He saw a beautiful ballerina dancing on the beach. It was late afternoon and he grardized the image in his mind. years later he had already composed La Belle Jour and so it was recorded. an excruciating success in 1985. a classic of Alceu Valença to this day.
Alceu is one of the best performers I have ever seen. Been to 2 of his concerts and he brings the audience to perform with him, such a wonderful experience.
Alceu is simply one of the very best artists in the entire histroy of Brazilian music. His style can't be defined to a single label: he has dabbled in psychedelia, protest songs, folk, frevo, samba, etc. His live concerts are usually very intense with sparsely quieter moments like this video here. I highly recommend you watch his concert "ALCEU AO VIVO NO MARCO ZERO" for a real taste of how great he is on stage.
That is the nicest thing about most of our main singers who sing this especific type of songs: they don't care about making everything beautiful and perfect. They feel like they are, in a beautiful evening, sitting at the sand of the beach, surrounded by friends, with an acoustic guitar on their hands. It's not a concert. It's about having fun. It's a gathering of friends. They all sing songs that you can both just close your eyes, relax and feel de song, as much as get up and take your partner to dance cheek to cheek, falling in love all night long. That's why is so easy for him to make the audience to sing along and make part of the concert. The most famous singers of this kind of music are all friends of each other and they often do a big concert together, from time to time, named "O Grande Encontro" (meaning: The Great Meeting) and is starred by great names of brazilian music as Zé Ramalho, Alceu Valença, Geraldo Azevedo and Elba Ramalho (which is Zé Ramalho's cousin). If you allow me to make a suggestion, pleeeeeaaaase, react to "Dia branco" by Geraldo Azevedo, the live version. (ua-cam.com/video/uHyGN8QBP8w/v-deo.html) It's one of the greatest songs ever with an amazing lyrics, sung with Azevedo's smooth and gorgeous voice.
I love your analysis of Brazilian songs (my favorite). As I said before, you are also a star, because you have your own light and this is very bright. Greetings from Portugal.
The way he speaks, with the tip of his tongue touching his teeth, comes from the region where he’s from and lives-Northeast Brazil, specifically Pernambuco. He’s my fellow countryman. That’s why Portuguese words starting with "D" and "T" are pronounced like that, giving his speech a strong, authentic sound true to the written language. I love my accent and wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world.
I'm Brazilian, I've listened to this song my whole life, it's a classic, and yet every time I hear this song I get emotional, it brings me a feeling of joy and complete peace, I don't even know how to explain it properly. I love your reactions and your ability to feel the songs and artists. Songs and singers are not just about technique, it's much more about the feelings they are able to make us feel.
That strong D sound that you reffer to is specific to some accents in northeastern Brazil. Alceu is a artist from the state of Pernambuco, and here, the accent is very characteristic, with the D and T sounds made with the tip of the thongue. It's not just the song. We talk like this. And i'm just loving the reactions to our brazilian artists! Thank you!
I would love to hear your analysis of chico buarque's voice, for example roda viva song. He is a divisor of opinions in the singing community here Brazil. I heard some singers comment he is not a good singer, but I love his voice. It has a lot of nazality, even for brazillians standards, but somehow it works, and gives almost a horn sound.
I'm Brazilian and La Belle de Jour is one of the songs that gets me the most emotional. As soon as it starts playing, I'm in tears 😂 one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life ♥️🇧🇷
There are two ways to sing Alceu's songs: the first is the way he sings, with a northeastern accent, in which the nasal vowels are much stronger and more vibrant, because northeasterners make the vowels sound clean and crystalline at the end of words. The other way is to sing the way most Brazilians pronounce the final vowels of most words, in a soft and breathy way. The northeastern way is more beautiful because it makes the voice sound higher, cleaner and brighter like crystal.
That was lovely! Thanks for that! It would be great if you did a reaction to Maria Bethania. I would risk saying that she is the greatest and most interesting voice from Brazil. There is one video where she sings Explode Coração acapella, it's just beautiful!
I love your commentaries… If I can be any humble in my comment regarding the Brazilian crowd… i love Alceu Valença… if you would like to get a glimpse of how we responde to artists we love when we are part of their concert, please, take a look at queens performance at Rock n rio 1985 (love of my life). We are not English speakers but this will give you a sense of how the public will responde to their beloved artists. ❤❤❤❤
Honestly, most brazilian music gringos analyze and react to are from Rio or São Paulo, which makes sense, but it feels so good seeing someone appreciating music sang with my accent
Viva o Nordeste! Abraços do Espírito Santo ❤
Alceu Valença is love and energy in the form of music. Therefore, loved in the Brazilian Northeast and throughout the country. The diction detail ("d" and "t" on the tip of the tongue with the teeth) is typical of your region. The northeastern accent is varied, but unique in relation to the rest of the country, like the accents of Rio de Janeiro where the "s" has the sound of "sheess" (as in anxious) perhaps the closest region to Portuguese in Portugal; from São Paulo where the short and strong "r" (as in "work"), which is very reminiscent of the US English accent with the Italian ("macarone", "ma que"!). The South has similar traits but with Spanish and Portuguese influences (coast of Santa Catarina); but Minas Gerais (in the Southeast) the Midwest, North and Northeast, although with differences, were marked by the Tupi-Guarani (predominant indigenous ethnicity in the country). Hence the main characteristic of the Brazilian Portuguese is syllabic, phonetic and buco-nasal. Portuguese from Portugal literally suppresses phonemes and identical words in both countries are pronounced in completely different ways. And, therefore, there are enormous difficulties for Brazilians to understand Portuguese from Portugal. Ally yourself to this the huge population of African origin, and one has the understanding that Brazilian Portuguese is almost an endemic language, with enormous endogenous variations, because even grammatically Brazilian Portuguese already keeps many colloquial distinctions from Portugal (which bothers them, but it is irreversible phenomenon). And Brazilian Portuguese has little to do with Spanish, something similar to Swedish and German. Similar words, very different pronunciations, vocabulary and semantics. They are certainly very close languages, and allow for a certain communicability, but enormous difficulties and misunderstandings. It is necessary to study Spanish and vice versa to be learned, as in any other different languages. Finally, Brazil is a continental country with the same shared language, but with amazing accents and variations. Obs.: Brazil has the largest black population outside Africa, the largest Italian population outside Italy, the largest German population outside Germany, the largest Japanese population outside Japan, in addition to a huge population of Syrian, Lebanese and Turkish origin. Therefore, although countries like the US and Canada have immigrants from all over the world, miscegenation is the country's biggest brand. This can confuse or even amaze anyone visiting the country. Congratulations for your work.

(ua-cam.com/video/uHyGN8QBP8w/v-deo.html)
It's one of the greatest songs ever with an amazing lyrics, sung with Azevedo's smooth and gorgeous voice.
Tive a honra de ir no show dele na minha cidade no mês passado! Simplesmente fantástico! Alceu Valença, um dos nossos grandes artistas 🇧🇷❤️
O Alceu é lírico, e mágico! Ele te leva sim ao mundo romântico!
Olá, Beth. Bem-vinda.🌹
Eu morei 40 anos em Olinda, terra do Alceu Valença. Pesquise o Carnaval de Olinda. E maravilhoso.
This is really important brasilian artist to our music and culture and that is one of my favorities songs.
I’m born in Brazil, in Nordeste.
And I need a translator for this music. 😂
Him singing "his eyes blue like a sunday sky" and her eyes shining 🥰
You must react to Milton Nascimento - Travessia, or anything by Milton Nascimento (specially when he was younger). He is simply amazing vocally.
Beth Roars. Amei!
Alceu Valença is like Jethro Tull. I’M from Brazil’s northeast and I can say that our music are The Best music from Brazil!
His music really takes us to a magical, mistery tour.
Oh gosh, I love British accent, so adorable and sophisticated 😍😍
Perfeito!!!
Era de ouro da musica brasileira. Que ORGULHO ver gringo curtindo nossa cultura. ❤
"Seus olhos azuis como a tarde, a tarde de um domingo azul."
É um trecho da letra da canção que cai bem para a apresentadora deste canal.
É muito emocionante ver sua carinha feliz ouvindo uma música brasileira! Você nos faz sentir muito mais do que simplesmente ouvir! Obrigado!
So nice to see her listening this music and watch it with her beautiful blue eyes :)
Pra mim a sensação dessa música é saudade, literalmente. Saudade pura.
No Brasil existem muitos sotaques. A forma de cantar no norte/norderste é diferente do Sudeste/Sul. Alceu é maravilhoso!
This lady is enchanting and fantastic in knowledge
I'm Brazilian and La Belle de Jour is one of the songs that gets me the most emotional. As soon as it starts playing, I'm in tears 😂 one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life ♥️🇧🇷
Alceu Valença the best!!!
Hahahahahah! Bem por aí, meu caro!
Ney também
I've been to his concert and it's incredible!!! ❤❤❤
Viva Alceu!
Coração do nosso país é Nordestino...👍😘
You need to listen to his early stuff, it's insanely genius. Dente de Ocidente, Vou Danado pra Catende, Cabelos longos... Pure gold.
The audience being part of it, got tears in my eyes
Not even the lyrics (I'm brasilian, so I understand it), but they're singing so deeply
So good
I LOVE ALCEU VALENÇA ❤ WE'RE THE SAME CITY (,RECIFE)😊
I love your commentaries… If I can be any humble in my comment regarding the Brazilian crowd… i love Alceu Valença… if you would like to get a glimpse of how we responde to artists we love when we are part of their concert, please, take a look at queens performance at Rock n rio 1985 (love of my life). We are not English speakers but this will give you a sense of how the public will responde to their beloved artists. ❤❤❤❤
Honestly, most brazilian music gringos analyze and react to are from Rio or São Paulo, which makes sense, but it feels so good seeing someone appreciating music sang with my accent
He's a brazillian genius, thank you for this reaction
My northeast. We live of beach, good food and poetry.
A explicação do Alceu Valença sobre a composição dessa música é hilária, divertidíssima e inusitada! Resumindo muito, ele fez a música pra Atriz Francesa errada! Pensou numa, e era a outra! Muito bom!
this sound in Recife's carnaval is the craziest thing dude! I just love be brazilian! ❤
Im so glad that you reacted Alceu Valença!
He’s a Brazilian MPB legend .
All his songs are amazing…
Onde você estiver, lá haverá um brasileiro.
Obrigada por esse vídeo! Amei!

Viva o Nordeste! Abraços do Espírito Santo ❤
Melhor do Brasilllllllll...

So cool and unexpected to see Pernambuco represented on your channel! Muito legal!
Alceu Valença!!! Fantastic Artist 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
this song is literally an anthem in some parts of Brazil
I love Alceu Valença! This show gives me goosebumps from start to finish. ❤🇧🇷
We all here in Brazil love Alceu
