- 7 names and 7 Bengali Side dishes (Bhaja and Bata)
Recipe
Cook your rice as you normally would. Long grains, steaming hot and fluffy
Fry in this order :
Bhaja no. 1 - Narkel(Coconut) Bhaja
Cut off thin slices of fresh coconut, and chop the slices into smaller pieces.
-In a hot pan, add 1/2 tbsp mustard oil, 1/4 tsp nigella seeds and the coconuts
Add a pinch of salt. Fry for 4-5 minutes until the edges are golden
Bhaja no. 2 - Aloo(potato) bhaja
Slice the potato, with skin on but washed, into thin circles
in a pan add 1/2 tbsp mustard oil, 1/4 tsp nigella seeds, 2 dried red chilies and temper them. Add in the potato slices after 30 seconds
add 1/4 tsp of turmeric
Fry until the edges start to get brown-ish, add salt and 1 tbsp of poppy seeds
Bhaja no. 3 - Kumro (Pumpkin) Bhaja
The process is similar to aloo bhaja, except, do not add poppy seeds at the end. and make sure to add 1/4 tsp sugar for the amount I have used
Bhaja no. 4 - Uchche (Bitter melon) bhaja
Same process, but I used paanch phoron, instead of nigella seeds. No turmeric is required here and no salt.
Bhaja no. 5 - Match(fish) Bhaja
Marinade your fish with turmeric, salt and mustard oil for 15 minutes. and deep fry in piping hot oil.
Bhaja no. 6 - Shaak/Saag(Left greens) Bhaja
I have used spinach here. Chop it up. Slice up 5 cloves of garlic as well.
In 1 tsp hot oil, add 1/4 tsp mustard seeds, 1 dry red chilies, and the garlic cloves.
When the garlic cloves are golden, add in the spinach.
keep stirring for 2 minutes. Add salt and sugar along with a pinch of turmeric
Cook for another 3-4 minutes until some of the water from the Shaak has evaporated away
Final side dish - Poshto (Poppy seed) bata (ground)
In a grinder soak 4 tbsp poppy seeds for 30 minutes
drain the water and add 3 tbsp water and 4 green chillies
add 1/4 tsp salt and blitz it until it is a smooth paste
It can be eaten raw, as it is.
All my love, Feashts

Honestly, using “old lady” and “ugly” as terms of endearment is super sweet. Being these things aren’t bad, they’re just another way to be!
Ngl, the first almost equivalent that came to my mind was "skrunkly" but to be fair, I use that endearingly when I see an animal that is totally healthy, but just looks absolutely jacked up.
@@poke-talia268true!! i’ll be like “aww it’s all skragwly”
I’m almost certain the replies are trying their best to say “scraggly” “scrawny” or “scruffy”.
@@hiphiphoogray when I say skrunkly, I mean skrunkly. It's just a goofy funky amalgam word that's just fun to use

Yeah and I loved how I didn't need the explanations to understand the names
I feel like being called ugly in an endearing way is better than being called pretty in a serious way. I feel like it’s easier to become self-conscious when given compliments because whatever you’re complimented for can then hold power over you and can take time away from matters to you. Also, it takes the fear and pain away from an insult. It seems like proactive care. Filling a word with love that can also be used in hate. Pretty is a delicate word that can easily be shattered.
Pechi doesn't even mean ugly per se, although it can be used in that context. It just means a female owl (pecha being male owl). So calling someone pechi just means they look like an owl lol 🤣
so refreshing to see someone representing bengali culture ❤
But not speaking in benagli! How refreshing! ❤
it's to help others understand our culture better.

My dad calls me ma....which is pretty common thing as a lot of Fathers call their daughter in bengali culture....I remember this one time someone asked my dad why are you calling your daughter that, she's not your mother and he told that bcoz she's the one who'll care for me like my own mother ❤😍
That's beautiful
❤ absolutely true
That’s cute, seems like you have a strong relationship with your father. I am happy for you.
My mesho calls me 'ma'
Spanish does the same thing in many accents. You can call your children or your young students “papi” or “mami”. Like a cute baby nickname, like English’s “sony” or “buddy”. But it also means “mommy” and “daddy” for your own parents. And some people use it for a more sexual way, like in music lyrics. Not so cute then.
This is so relatable. I am from Nigeria and that is how we have seven, eight names with each person person giving you their own special name for you. ❤
As a greek i didn't expect to relate with this so much in my family i am called one of my nicknames more than my own name my brother usually calls me ichi or noul or nouli which all are nicnames made by using my name my sister calls me koutsounaki ( this means something cute and small similar how people use doll in English) 😂

I would say "pechi" means lokkhi mayer bahon "pecha". I love how you're representing Bengali culture! We have such a rich history and heritage, yet it hasn't been represented well enough in my opinion. Thankfully, content creators such as yourself are taking steps. Hopefully, someday Bengali culture will be respected and loved like all the other cultures.

U really made me remind of my old childhood days when we used to stay in our village house. Every night after I finished my studies, I used to gossip with my grandfather and he used to ask me to count the no. of names I have that are given by different my family members.... If your dad is Nepali , then what nationality would you be from ?
Asking out of curiosity. Also do you think Nepalese culture bears much difference with that of India ( wondering how India would have been if we were not invaded ) ? As in between Nepalese environment and India’s which one do you think is more peaceful / safer especially considering the threat faced by native culture in India ?
@YinYanUzumaki My ancestors were born in West Bengal, India. I have no idea about Nepal's culture. We always followed Indian traditions. Maybe my great-great-great grandfather was from Nepal but we have no intel on that. My grandfather worked for the Indian Army so that makes us Indian speaking Nepali language.

I'm Bengali and before my dad died, he gave me 3888 nicknames. He used to chant them everyday to make sure he never forgot them. He even sang them to me as a lullaby. I hardly remember 30 of them now. But they were all small common words like "phul" (flower), "neel" (blue), "dora" (from doraemon), "devi" (Goddess), etc. I'm yet to meet anyone who has got more nicknames from their family than me.

i just found out today that the nickname i randomly came up with also means the highest form of endearment in bengali and i love it
Bura, babu, shuna, hari tommatom, swcho. Out of them all Swcho is the one I love. As it represents my transparency and honesty.
all of those nicknames sound so cute, haha
this is hands down the cutest video ever i think
I have 8 names. And randomly being by many other names. Being a Bengali and having a daak naam which is not a short name from your ‘bhalo naam’ is one of the most precious things , which i realised after growing up.
my mum has a million nicknames for me, but i think a few of my favourites are 'shona pakhi', which means beautiful bird, and 'chaad er kona' which means the moon's darling. she usually likes to smash them into this godawful supernickname, which is just 'shona pakhi chaad er kona ma'. i say it's god awful, but i lied. it's very cute :)
my dad likes to call me 'baba' and 'ma', which is ironic considering our roles are obviously the opposite, but i think it's a sweet reflection on how we care for each other. i take care of him, similar to how his parents did for him when he was younger, and he of course does the same for me.
thank you for reminding me to appreciate both my parents a little more :)
Lolol calling someone ugly in an endearing way is like when you call your dog/pet ugly, even though you know that they're cute.
Born in Bengal, originally from Rajasthan here...no wonder why I have 9 names with "Babu" being one of them...😃
I love what your hubby calls you,😂😂😂
Never noticed calling my dog babu wad actually a real word, much less that is was endearing in a way. Makes sense, he is my everything
Pretty much how siblings around here call each other ugly. Its usually jokes and aggressive love
My father used to call me "Didi" Which literally means sister but it was the most endearing Nick name I have ever received, he passed away 7 months ago... My ears are dying to hear that name from his mouth again...RIP Abbu 🕊
The most beautiful daak naam I own is Muktokeshi which my grandpa calls me with. It actually means the one with open hair. And Doyel Pakhi is a name my baba gave me.
