I'm also a 21 handicap and while there is a lot to get from the philosophy we've still got to remember that if we're hitting a driver to get 200 yards Matt is a professional and using a 5 iron to get the same distance. I don't know about you but I hit my 5 iron a lot more accurately than my driver. I've seen other UA-cam professionals do the same type of comparison but they are better players than us so don't have the mishits we can have.
Big fan of the channel generally and the podcast is the best of the golf bunch IMO. This sort of content is right up my street, please stick at it. Golf sidekick's course management and psychology content is fantastic and he has a very commited fanbase (of which I'm one) but your ability to add in all that Pro teaching knowledge as well is superb.👍
I am 75 years old and play for the enjoyment of the game so I play the front tees to keep the game enjoyable . My wife does not hit very far so I put her at 200 on the 4s and 225 on the 5s ,if she is getting tired toward the end of the round I move her closer . This way she has fun and still feels she is competing .
Great points and strategy! Although would choose some different clubs to make par5s when able and having a birdie would be gravy. On par3s depending on hazard, being short maybe a better play. Agree that not focusing on a "must break 90" and just using mental bits like just improving putting (good tip on alignment) and/or driver will actually help with your score in the end. Keep a positive vibe going and stay away from any hero shots, play within your strengths to enjoy your round. Use your "go to club" when needed, and plan out your strategy with any hazards involved first👍
UA-cam pros keep saying we end up short % of the time, fail to factor in this due to poor strike chucking a 5 iron carries the same as a chunked 7 iron
Me being a 20+ handicap and playing with all my friends it's not distance that kills us. Hes saying high handicapers hit 3 wood like 130 😂 distance isnt the problem unless ur older. a lot of the strokes r coming from hitting out of bounds off the tee, the short game and chunking/thinning balls often
I have some consistency with my driver and irons now but now putting and chipping is killing me. Get on or around the green but still have 3 steokes Minimum most of the time haha
@KingKarlTNT i hear ya. Irons r the best part of my game. Some days I'm good with driver some days not. A lot of the time I'll hit a hybrid off the tee to give me a full iron in instead of having a shot under 100. I'm getting better at chipping tho. Ive been practicing at home. I can only get out and golf like once a month that's why I'm not very good
I'm a 71 year old 22 handicapper and that number is gradually coming down. My hopefully conservative goal is to be at 20 or better by the end of the year. I play twice a week and this is always in the club's local competition, so I don't get a choice of tees. So it's mostly blue tees which is 5945 metres (6500 yards). Twice a month we play black tees, which add about another 500 metres, not that much of a problem because I get about 3 additional shots playing stableford. I find myself playing fewer driver shots off the tees these days, or using the driver with a slower swing. This solution has me hitting much straighter than my normal slice. Scores are coming down, and I've just broken 90 for the first time, and I did it twice in consecutive games! Putting is still a bit of a challenge - speed is still so hard to judge. But the course management & knowing what I can reasonably expect to do with each shot is what's making the difference. Yes, there's still the duffed shots, but not as many because I'm not trying to hit the ball to the limits of my distances any more.
Im buying new irons. Should i stick to a stiff shaft(No kenneth Williams please 😂)even tho, im now over 50. Or go with something like Cobra SZ or Tour MIM.
I realise that my experience may be different to yours but I disagree with your par 3 strategy. Unless there is water in front, it is always less dangerous to play to the front on a par 3. There is never out of bounds short! Average golfers hitting enough club to get to the back of the green are going to be missing left and right by more than if they played to the front. All but one of the par 3’s on my course are parable from in front of the green but are very difficult to par if you miss pin high or long. Plus for high handicappers, bunkers are generally speaking really dangerous in that they have poor technique and will often leave it in there. Playing short lessens the chance of going in a bunker.
That’s alright if you’re a good striker of the ball like you are but most 20 handicappers Duff their shots are not good strikers of the ball like you that’s why they’re 20 handicappers I noticed you never missed a shot that’s because you’re a goodstriker the ball
This is so stupid. Most high handicappers can easily hit a driver over 250 yards. Dont get why these"pros" dont understand that. The reason we are high handicap is consistency. One drive might go 280 down the middle then the next will only go 50 yards or 200 yards left or right OB
Sorry but I don’t think this is correct… distance is not the problem. I’ve done rounds where I’ve limited my clubs to 150yds and I still made 114… because I can’t control the club face and can just as easily slice driver as my 7 iron. Never hitting 3 good shots in a row is why I struggle to break 90. Losing 4+ balls a round from tee shots is why a struggle to break 90. Hitting 11% fairways per round… being unable to play a draw or fade on command… making only 11% GIR… army golfing for a 15 at Formby Ladies hole 2 etc. Dispersion is more important than distance.

Love the course management content. As a 21 handicap there is a lot for me to take away here.

This was great! Very helpful. Now waiting for the weather to turn and allow me to put the advice to work.

Really great advice Matt - thank you.🥇
Excellent course management video
Matt, please do this with a 32 hcrp!
#1 tip only play 9 holes
If that fails play 6

Yea its so old fashioned to think high Handicap olayers cant hit it far. Its the accuracy and consistency thats the problem.

Great tips on course management although some of us trying to break 90 aren’t all 2 putters 😂

I play off 12 and struggle if I concentrate too much on my score, I would say get someone else to keep your score and just relax and enjoy your golf 👍
My course has a par 3 which is quite sloped forward. It is a disaster to hit for the back of the green.
Im buying new irons. Should i stick to a stiff shaft(No kenneth Williams please 😂)even tho, im now over 50. Or go with something like Cobra SZ or Tour MIM.
Most of the courses I play all tees are within 10 or so yards of each other

You got tips on breaking 80, I'm floating between 80 and 85 most times
"This is a 130 yd par 3, why do you have driver out?"
"Matt told me to take front trouble out of play."
Great video Matt, BUT, a 3-4 foot putt for most 20 handicappers is not an easy tap in!
It's the tap ins that screw me over

He literally got state from an app for one. For two, he and others have many videos that advise on consistency too
