Coronavirus Leaves 3M Scrambling To Cover A Face Mask Shortage

  • The United States industrial giant is the maker of Post-It notes, Scotch Tape, and one of the most desperately needed medical supplies in the world right now: N95 facial masks.
The $32 billion Minnesota conglomerate 3M is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of N95 filtering face masks, which have been in high demand in the U.S. and around the world since the coronavirus outbreak.
N95 respirators are so named because they are capable of filtering out 95% of large and small particles, including certain types of bacteria.
They are considered essential equipment in occupations ranging from construction to medicine.
And in early 2020 health officials worried there were not nearly enough of them. In early March, officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said the country had only about 35 million of the 3.5 billion N95 respirators needed in the event of a full-blown pandemic.
3M doubled global production to 1.1 billion per year from about 400 million per year, and the company said in late March it plans to double production again to 2 billion within 12 months.
The explosion of face mask demand could provide a small boost for 3M, which reported sales of about $32 billion in 2019. The company does not break down the actual size of its face mask business, but some Wall Street analysts estimate 3M sold anywhere from $100 million to $325 million in face masks prior to the outbreak of the disease. The outbreak could add another $300 million in sales, said one analyst.
This would be only a tiny portion of 3M’s overall business, but the importance of the product still has focused a tremendous amount of attention on the company.
Shares of 3M, which are valued at about $78 billion, have fallen more than 22% since the start of the year.

Running out? It ran out over a month ago. I asked people who did stock at the stores and they say they always order it but none shows up. They say they are only getting 30% of their normal orders and having higher demand, and that is why stores are empty.

We own a facility that manufactures and sells n95 masks in China. We have a 500,000sq ft facility with a dedicated ISO class 5 Cleanroom for our 300,000 daily n95 production capabilities (and 1MM masks a day for surgical masks once it's at full operation) and we are taking bulk orders (10,000 pc minimum) for shipment within China, our clients are usually in charge of export as there simply isn't enough time for our limited employees to deal with exports. We supply to one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in China called XiuZheng pharmaceutical group 修正集团 and have sold millions of our n95 respirators to them. We also supply millions of n95 respirators to Xiaomi 小米, the multinational company. We've had clients export to Russia, HK and US, though I'm not quite sure the exact logistics they had to go through through. Some clients use freight forwarding companies.
The material costs have literally increased 10-fold in the last two months alone so our masks are currently more expensive than usual, for example, one ton of n95 raw material used to cost 20,000 rmb, now for the same ton of n95 material costs 200,000-800,000 rmb, which is literally up to 40 times the cost for the same exact material.
There is a simply global shortage of n95 grade materials, which explains the increased costs. Even 3M masks now are sold for $4-5/mask wholesale when purchasing millions.
But anyway, please contact me on Wechat or Whatsapp if you, your family or acquaintances have any questions, I'd love to help as best I could.
My Wechat ID is: franktsaur and my WhatsApp ID is +16269916596. I am based in Los Angeles, but I work with the Asia team remotely.

I work for 3M in one of their distribution centers in California. We've been shipping out a shitload of masks and sponges due to this whole thing. We have the masks and are shipping by the truckload, but we can't even get any as employees or give any out to anyone who comes to our warehouse wanting some. The masks are shipping out by priority (hospitals, firefighters, police dept's) and then to the public market. The amount of overtime we're working to get this stuff out lately is crazy. Keep that in mind before you diss 3M or any other person having to work during this difficult time. We are trying to get this kinda stuff out while risking our own health...

Jake Kirkpatrick you’re one of the unsung heroes in all of this. Thanks for all you’re doing. It’s not 3M’s responsibility to decide who is going to get masks first. Whoever orders first should get their order first. It’s exhausting reading the comments here from Fox News viewers who saw a Tucker Carlson segment where some clown from Florida tells their tale of unpreparedness and tries to blame 3M. These clowns don’t seem to understand that you have manufacturing facilities around the globe to supply regional markets. I understand that 3M’s US facilities supply the North American market primarily. Canada and Mexico would be the ‘foreign’ countries affected by Trump’s recent ‘America First’ demand. These people see some typical misinformation on Fox News and are ready to break out the torches and pitchforks on your CEO. They are totally unaware that only one pulp and paper mill in the world produces the pulp used in the manufacture of N95 masks and it is located in B.C., Canada so maybe Trump better play nice with his neighbors. Stay well, my friend!

We should all have been wearing masks from the beginning. It's sad that our country cannot provide masks to it's citizens. I understand the priority of providing health care workers masks because we have a shortage, but wouldn't it also make sense to require citizens to wear them? Not having citizens wear masks is like sending soldiers out in a battlefield without a gun and instead giving the gun to the medics in a hospital. You're going to have an overwhelming number of people get wounded, which will then overwhelm the medics and the hospitals and will increase the need for critical and costly live savings equipment like ventilators. I understand ventilators are necessary, but if you can slow down the rate of sick people through PPE and social distancing, you could also reduce the number of costly life saving equipment such as ventilators, which are in short supply. We need to have more factories pumping out masks ASAP and getting them into everyone's hands. If we can pump out millions of dollars in missiles and military equipment, why can't we make something as simple as masks? I just don't get it

The point of wearing a mask is not necessarily to protect the wearer, but to protect others. That is it limits the distance droplets can be spread into the surrounding area. That's why masks reduce community spread. Not because they protect the wearer, but because they decrease the amount of virus-bearing droplets in the immediate area.
I can't believe this is so hard for so many to understand.

nope, you're wrong, it depends on which kind of face mask your wearing, different levels of masks has different kind of protection.(that's the reason why the medical personnel wear N95 when they have to close contact to the covid-19 patient)

    • @justasimpleguy7211
      @justasimpleguy7211 4 роки тому +1

@@seunosewa The protection for a wearer is minimal. That is if someone with the virus and contagious coughs within close enough proximity to someone wearing a mask it's almost a guarantee they will either inhale some of the virus or get it on there hands directly or when taking off the mask and then transferring it to their face.
There's an extensive and rigorous protocol for removal of PPE and if it's not followed PPE is almost useless.
Also if one is not wearing the mask properly, which I can guarantee 90%+ aren't and one isn't wearing eye protection, again useless.
Again, the major benefit of wearing a mask is to limit projection of coughed or sneezed virus-bearing droplets. That's where the VAST majority of the benefit is. It only protects one werer from getting infected, maybe, but it can protect 2.5 uninfected people from being infected by a contagious person.

It took a tiny country like Taiwan less than 3 weeks to re-assemble their old surgical mask factories...call back their machinists/ technicians, their former workers and then ramp up production to 13 MILLION SURGICAL MASKS A DAY!!!!
before Feb 5th, 2020, Taiwan, like the rest of tje world, was 90% dependent on imported masks from China, but since bloody China not only had a lock down, but also was selling masks of terribly sub standard products every where, Taiwan manufacturers decided to take the matter in their own hand
From the get go, all the mask manufacturers turned down orders from overseas and only focused on making masks for the citizens of Taiwan....( think about that, 3M....)
Now they have more than enough to spare....and are donating 10 millions to the rest of the world...yes you heard me, DONATING...
