Face masks were one of our earliest interventions to slow the spread of Covid-19. For two years we’ve largely relied on local governments and businesses to tell us when and where to wear them, but now those mandates are being lifted. So is it actually safe to take off the masks for good?
It depends on who you are and where you are. Cases are dropping in many places around the world after a harsh omicron surge, but some countries are still fighting off deadly waves of the virus. Many public health experts are warning that the pandemic isn’t over yet, even if it feels like it is to some of us. It’s a good idea to hang onto your mask for now, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear it every day for the rest of your life, just that you should take a few key things into consideration. Check out the video above to learn more about risk mitigation as we weather the third year of a pandemic.

It's been just over 2 years since Covid-19 was declared a pandemic in the US. During that time, mask wearing, mandates, and vaccines became deeply polarizing topics.

Masks=TREASON
I really thought we were advanced enough not to get polarized on a public health concern.
@@MrAnonymouselol lots of people are tribal and make everything a us/them thing. Populist politicians use this to gain power
What I don't get is why does wearing a face mask need to be so politicized in countries like the us and some in Europe?
Because you forced people to do something they didn't want to for minimal benefit at best for two years? Yea I think that's the explanation. Those people are also very worried about the precedent this event sets if they don't push back, do you want to be mandated to wear masks every flu season? Sorry but that's unacceptable
people politicized everything these days, it’s just public health
That may be true on a personal level, but government mandating is seen as overstepping the bounds of the role of the government. Infringing on freedoms. Plus, at this stage in the pandemic, it is less of a risk factor to not wear a mask
@@urjitkhatua956 Because crying about "safety" is how tyranny begins
It’s politically viable to sow distrust of our institutions, to claim tyranny while doing everything possible to prolong the pandemic so that corporations can profit
A missing premise is the problem with the me-mentality behind all of this. In Japan they've worn masks since far before the pandemic for yes, protecting oneself, but also as a SOCIAL OBLIGATION if you're feeling sick. If you feel sick and absolutely need to leave the house, you should mask up to protect others.
i dont know how to feel about this. I think yes, its a good thing and it shows humanity and showing you care about others. but also no, humans need to get sick. if we do this, less people will get sick less and less over time. this will jus mean that your immune system will weaken and something as simple as the cold could rlly harm you. i dont know tho, this is jus based on my knowledge and im not sure if this will actually happen im not a doctor

Born and raised in Vietnam, wearing mask is a common thing for all of us as it not only protects us from pollution, but also works as face shades since we ride motorbikes everyday. I truly understand the struggle of Americans/Europeans because of the suffocation and irritation, but I always tryna think this way, our little effort of wearing a mask is saving and helping countless lives around you and people you love, so why not ?

@@kennethkho7165 so true lol especially with hot climate, but imagine having respiratory problems for the REST OF YOUR LIFE lol
Japanese people have used face masks to prevent the spread of respiratory illness in winter for decades. If you are ill and go to work you wear a mask to prevent others catching your illness. Also the elderly might be well served using a mask in crowded places in winter. This year's flu vaccine has been largely ineffective but continued caution on the part of the elderly has prevented the surge in deaths that we would have seen otherwise. Advice on mask wearing from Public Health agencies should discuss these issues and inform the public who can then make reasonable choices.
What we should be going towards instead is not encouraging people to work when they are sick. Shocking huh? if you are sick, stay at home. I know it's not easy for some people, but the government and employers should be encouraging that with better and more PTO and sick leave. It's ridiculous that in USA 2 weeks (10 business days) vacation is considered a norm and 15 days is a lot. In many countries, people get much more than that.
we can't wear masks for our lifetime and sanitize the whole universe! take care of immune system, eat healthy and know dying is a part of human evaluation
I love how you are trying to make it sound like good thing that the Japanese wear masks when they're ill. When you're sick you shouldn't be forced to go out to work.
@@Myumeful It's a good thing regardless, but you're right. Japan has a brutal work culture and that can help as an excuse for employers to still make people come in. But its still a good precedent set. Sometimes you aren't that sick or you need to go out for whatever reason and if you feel the need or want to be respectful, you can wear a mask and it won't be seen as weird.
Yeah, but Japanese are both considerate of others and think long term... no American qualities
All those factors she mentioned that increase the risk: no ventilation, lot of people in a crowded space… Well, that’s every public classroom. In most schools they leave the doors shut for safety from intruders, with 30 - 36 students per class.
30-35 students per class? Whoa. That’s a lot. And closed off too. I hope the rooms are big enough to accommodate that many students.

@Saint Ratus We wish it were just a cold, but there are thousands of kids and millions of adults living with long COVID. It’s no joke, long COVID means symptoms like kidney failure and heart disorders and extreme fatigue. Imagine being effectively disabled and having no idea if or when you’ll be healthy again. That’s what we’re trying to avoid, not the weeklong sniffles from a cold.
And still, in my country masks are optional (but recommended) now… I won’t be surprised if many of my classmates will have to stay home cause of covid soon, but given that we have end-of-highschool exams soon, I really hope it won’t come to that… (PS: you’d think they’d care more about the virus when the exams which are required to graduate are on the line, but apparently not…)

I can't wait for regular viruses to actually return to the community & all these "the mask stopped me getting sick" people to realise it was always just a placebo & you didn't get sick cause there was no virus circulating to get you sick! & how about looking after your health PROPERLY & getting that cough issue properly investigated & fixed? @@mehere8038 Not super sure what your argument is? The various viruses were, in fact, circulating less. Because of the masks. Because of the social distancing. So it's feeling the direct effect of the measures working !
I do agree though with getting that cough checked out, it doesn't sound normal
@@miri6600 There are variants of the flu that are believed to have possibly gone extinct due to the pandemic! Viruses have NOT been circulating in the normal way! That meant that as the northern hemisphere's winter began later in 2020, there was no seeding of the flu or other winter viruses from the southern hemisphere, which near wiped them out in the northern hemisphere too

For me- and this is an entirely unscientific, intuitionist thought- COVID-slowing restrictions have never been about eliminating COVID-19, from some mix of acting too slowly at the beginning and the virulence of SARS-CoV-2, but about reaching a critical level of medical progression so that serious infections can be treated and prevented without over-straining medical resources. I don't think COVID is ever going away, and while we should take it and all infectious diseases seriously (like the seasonal flu) we also must make a value judgement as to when the over-identification of mandates becomes a bigger problem than the under-identification of personal choice. I don't think we're at that point for masks or vaccines (yet), but I understand the power of self-selection into risk pools. Unfortunately this last point too has been corrupted by the same disinformation campaigns that have made masking and vaccination campaigns less effective- and with self-selection being a phenomenon barred from actually occurring, the under-identification harms of allowing complete autonomy are amplified severalfold. For now, COVID restrictions have turned into a cat-and-mouse game of doing the best you can now without losing sight of some long-term exit strategy- and without supplying ammunition to the people who's bogus claims force the hand of regulation. I'll put it this way: if the 95% of people for whom masks and vaccines are the objectively correct choice actually followed through on that choice, we could have been at that endgame exit stage for quite some time now.

i think it's common knowledge now, but wearing face masks is pretty common here in japan. this is especially true during pollen season, but it's also because of pollution in the city, and as a sense of decency to not spread your sickness when you are unwell. other times it's just for fashion or to copy idols and there's nothing wrong with that. so when covid started it didn't feel any different having to wear it every time we go out. i've been wearing a mask outside for as long as i can remember (half of it is because of my allergies and half because i like how it looks), i don't think i can ever be comfortable going outside without a face mask
Very good thing to be aware of your health, especially pollution. I hope most countries will accept the idea and proceed to normalize it. Here in the US, people were so anxious and in a hurry to be done with masks, but I never understood why masks were so unbearable for most of our population. To me it feels like I'm adding extra protection to my health and others, so I will proceed to ignore anyone who contests me on it.
@@iced4197 All eastern and South-east asian countries have normalized the wearing of masks and no one complains, no one makes a hissy fit whenever someone wears one. I think its because of the culture between the west and the east but hey what do I know.

This is what gets me: In the past couple of years that we’ve dealt with the pandemic, I’ve found that my allergies aren’t as bad if I’m wearing a mask. So I think I’m going to keep wearing a mask when I’m outside because I’d rather deal with a mask than with my allergies.
Might be weird, but what if you wore goggles too? Or is it only when you breathe the pollen in?
Honestly, even with these guideline changes, I still worry about the risk to myself and others. I'm vaccinated, boosted, and a strong believer in doing what is right/necessary to protect others, even those I don't know. And unfortunately, with this being an evolving situation, the best thing to do is always changing. I never really feel comfortable relaxing and feel the need to play things even more safely.
Moreover, seeing how people have reacted to new guidelines- even just to masking up-has shaken my trust in others. How can I know that others in my community are taking this seriously? And because I refuse to take a risk to protect myself and the ones I love, I have no idea if/when I will ever feel comfortable again without my mask.

I get sick pretty darned easily. The four months prior to the first shutdown I was sick for roughly 85% of the time, including a lovely bout of the norovirus right over Christmas. Finally feeling "allowed" to wear masks when I went out the way I had seen in Japanese media growing up felt very freeing, and for the first time since I can remember I finally went more than a full year without getting sick (the occasional migraine aside.) Now in the externship I'm undertaking the people around me are no longer required to wear masks, and often when they do they aren't wearing them correctly, and we are all working sometimes elbow to elbow. Knowing how delicate my health had become, I'm still wearing masks when I go out and plan on doing so for the foreseeable future, though I do plan on seeing a doctor again to see what else is going on that makes me so vulnerable. I feel the tiny bit of discomfort I sometimes have wearing the mask is far preferable than getting sick all the time again.
On top of that, I live with my parents, both of whom are over the age of 65 and act as my mother's caretaker. She also has numerous health issues that make her more vulnerable so of course I'm going to be extra careful about letting myself be exposed to possible illness, even if neither of my parents take it seriously anymore.
