    I bought my RS coupe new off the lot in Aug. 2000 when no turbo model impreza was offered in the US. USDM STI swapped it in ‘07 and acquired all the jdm goodies from 22B parts as well as many rare STI GC8 option parts which I imported myself from Japan. Even had some guys stationed in Oki ship parts for me back in the day! I still own the car 22 years on. It’s cool that they’re now becoming legal to import but at the same time bittersweet knowing any swinging d$&k can just get a GC8 and not actually have to build one themselves like us OGs had to.

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому +2

      That sounds like a solid build!! All the OG’s definitely paved the way for us all and it is great to dig in the forums and still get so many technical answers done. The crazy thing is Japan hasn’t dug so much into the swaps like yours so it is cool seeing even the locals get excited about the possibilities.
      Thanks for the comment man!

    I have the same exact 99 forester sf5...
    But with everything gda swapped..engine, 5mt 4.444 rear helical lsd, subframe,suspension and everything is from gda, using gdb cluster and dash and whole ac system...
    The only thing left sf5/gc8 is the radiator...(and bodyparts definately)
    Having newer engine with avcs and obd2 tuneable ecu definately the best part of swapping sf5 into gd parts...
    Subaru lego is never ending fun!
    Fun fact about sf5:
    Front suspension is gc8 layout
    Rear suspension is gda/gdb layout
    (Suspension top mount bolt pattern and rotation in relative to the car body)
    Sf5 rear seats can be swapped to gf8,gh8 (impreza wagon rear seats)
    Cheers 🍻

      We can totally relate. GC8s are some of the coolest cars and prices have always been high, but here in Japan they are the cheapest of all the sports cars. Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissans are selling for double sometimes triple the price of Subarus.
      Good news though, with yen being so weak right now it’s the best time to buy.

      @@OkiSubies I'm in Australia, so plenty here locally. But non STi models are cheap but often in poor shape, faded paint, blown engines, gearboxes or just really high mileage.
      I'm lucky because I have an FD RX7, Nissan Stagea 260rs and a few Fairlady 240z's. Which have all gone up in value. But I have still always wanted a GC8 and haven't got space for 1. Otherwise I would have got a GC8 or GF8 Wagon (STi) or 2 door Type R. I nearly got an early Subaru Forester XT (I like the early GTs) but I got the Stagea because I wanted an Rb26 engine for 20+ years.

Can you say more about how things are done differently there and what are funny/odd ways of modifying cars you oftenly come across (and im strickly talking about tuning, engine assembling, swaping....performance related stuff). Oh man. B4s have their own little click out here. We aren’t the biggest fans of them simply because of the twin turbo set up. Because of the two turbos there is double the work needed to do literally anything. But Dillon actually started off here in Japan with the B4 as his first car and it’s what started it all! Really fun cars.

    One thing to add in to this foresters sf to gc8 and GD to SG have interchangeable parts. They almost all interchange besides a few pieces (LCA, sway bar mount brackets etc) but suspension, engine components, handling bits, driveline bits all swap over. While the legacy has special parts that are only on legacy and don't swap over.

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому

      You are absolutely right! There is still a good amount that can be swapped over like engine and a good amount of the drivetrain but as you mentioned most of the suspension is completely different. My last GC8 had the BL Legacy ej20x in and that was a blast!

    the major difference with V5 and V6 STIs is the front and rear LSDs. Aus delivered V5/6 also got EJ207s. Im currently rebuilding my GF8 with a 500KW engine package (not that it will see that much, maybe 450) and finding an R180 that will work with the Liberty Spec B 6 speed and shafts without replacing hubs is problematic. Any info on what specific diff and shafts to look for?

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому +1

      That is a great question! For our Legacy we just did a GDB 6 speed because we already had the setup with front and rear LSD’s and we wanted DCCD. Then we just bought the custom races from Suberdave to make hybrid driveshafts. It was the easiest way but we will see how strong they are. We may have to get aftermarket driveshafts if they keep braking but those aren’t cheap😬

      Upgrade the oil pickup to the Killer B or Moroso as many of the oem ones have welds that fail over time. Also swap the flat bottom oil pan with an 06 sti pan for better oil control.
      Stay consistent with oil changes. I've even switched to using 5W40 in my EJ20K as I was told it's better at handling the heat from the turbo than 10w30 or 5w30 and so far so good!
      Always let it warm up and cool down before and after driving.
      If you have the means, install an equal length header. Doing this smoothes out the power delivery and helps keep all banks at a consistent temperature.
      These are just a few of the things I've picked up from several years of ownership. I'm sure others may have some good things to add that I either don't know or have forgotten.

    Couple of things you missed out, the brembo's wont go under the standard wheels, the offset is incorrect, prop shaft is a different length, then if you swap to a 6 speed you have to put in driveshaft converters to take it from male to female. I know as i had to wait 6 weeks for non overnight parts from japan hahahaha Also you then get the widetrack issues depending on what year you get the 6 speed conversion from.

    I've had 4 of them and 9 JDM Subaru's, good cars. EJ20G, EJ20K, EJ205, EJ207, EJ20X, EJ20Y all good engines.
    My type RA with the old EJ20G is getting hard to find parts though. Its the closed deck block and I want to go twin scroll 6 speed one day. is it better to build off my engine or get a v7-v9 EJ207?
    Side note what are the rims @5:14?

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for reaching out! Looks like you have some great experience with the Subaru platforms!
      That is a tough choice!!! We are a huge fan of the v7-v9 ej207 and the tunable platform is extremely beneficial so I would probably lean towards the swap for a few reasons.
      1. Twinscroll turbo requires the inlet to go through the manifold unlike the oem turbo so that can be tricky to figure out. (We have seen people weld a 90 degree elbo upwards so it is doable)
      2. Oil pan and pickup will need to be switched to the twinscroll oil pan.
      3. Once you figure out the mechanical aspect you would still need to get a stand alone of some sort to tune it.
      Or you can merge a v8-9 ej207 and call it a day😅 easier said than done right!?
      Those wheels are Advans but I can’t remember the model😅

    Hi, OkiSUbies! I have a version 5 GC8 with a weird startup issue. When cold start, RPM rev to 1500 then drop to 1100 and slowly climb back to 1500. When warm starts, not all the time, it will crank to about start, but not actually start, I must keep cranking and it will start up just fine.
    The starter motor, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel injector, fuel filter, MAF, air filter, O2 sensor, crank and cam angle sensor, spark plugs, and leads were all replaced. Any more suggestions?

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  Рік тому

      I would try to replace or clean the IACV and do a boost leak test. High rpms mean the engine is getting enough air to rev that high so the IACV could be stuck open or there could be a vacuum leak. You could also check the throttle body and make sure it is closing properly and isn’t cracked open.
      Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes🙂👍🏻

    Did we ever get GF8s in The States? Also, you mentioned the bugeye STI parts will bolt right on to GC8s but as we didn't get those over here, are there any other options? I know there was a Japanese guy from The Bay area over here on The West Coast that did an STI swap into his GC and that thing just lit me up with inspiration. Such a sick build. Hope to be owning one

      I don’t think the states ever got the GF8 specifically. Sorry if it was unclear but there is actually good news for you! We didn’t mean to say that only bugeye parts fit but much of the 02-07 parts fit mechanically. For example you could even find a GDB Blobeye STI parts car in the states and swap everything over to an early model Impreza. Only thing that gets tricky is the wiring🙂

    What engine came in the 98 legacy twin turbos? Is it reliable/worth it?

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому

      AT is EJ206 and MT is EJ208 and the main difference between the two is the turbos. They both have big port heads but non AVCS, Open deck block and honestly the twin turbo setup is a really complicated setup that makes it in our opinion not a very desirable engine.

    Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
    In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
    on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!

    • @OkiSubies
      @OkiSubies  2 роки тому +1

      Wow! This is really hard to read, I couldn’t imagine not being able to drive a gas powered car. “2 liters per minute”! How ridiculous…Your English is very good, move to a country that isn’t so progressive and do burnouts in your gas guzzling car just because you can. 🙌
