The story of Group B, the most insanely dangerous racing series ever known to man. There were virtually no restrictions and the series produced some of the most crazy race cars ever. Group B was so dangerous that it only lasted four seasons before it was abruptly cancelled after a number of crashes resulting in driver and fan fatalities.

How to drive rally:
Step 1: Start your engine.
Step 2: Accelerate properly.
Step 3: Pray.
Step 4: just do it!!!
Step 5: Hit a tree
Step 6: Get FIA to ban the entire thing after crashes and a previous incident involving 34 people.

Fun fact the reason they found fingers in the cars was because people would try to touch the windows of the cars whilst they hurled past, because they often drove with open windows the fingers and hands would get sliced off

Well that's dumb
that would suck to be the driver like u would zoom past the crowd then all the sudden theres 2 hands and some fingers in your lap
Ok, so thumbs to go up 👍
Wow. To think something that goes 200+ kmh in your direction is not dangerous, and even go so far to try to touch it is simply beyond belief.

*Plays some dirt, tries out the Group B cars. Is halfway into 3rd gear at just the tap of a pedal. Slamming into walls and flying off cliffs seconds later.*
Wtf are these cars?
They're barely controllable death machines, that's what they are.
Haha that was literally me last night the Greece stafes with the cliffs are impossible to complete
I'm still confused as to why they're available for so cheap in Dirt. They're basically the hardest difficulty in the game, yet they are just about the cheapest AWD rally cars. I had no idea since this is my first racing game and totaled the car in 4 out of the 6 events.
Funny enough, I then bought the R4 cars right after ranking group B, and the change was so drastic the R4 cars felt super boring.
@@carlos2004 Well, group B cars are basically just an engine and drivetrain with a plastic cover and two seats bolted on, not much luxury to drive up the price.
@@carlos2004 the cars werent really too expensive to start out with..... It was once the evolution models came out that they got expensive

Mitsubishi had group b car but before the development finished, group b was banned.

The problem was not Group B per se, but primarily the issue of crowd control or indeed the complete lack of it. Drivers choose to do this work and are at least aware. I just fail to understand why you would want to stand well within range of these missiles.

"B". For "Bitch-ass NASCAR drivers".
The lack of crowd control is what got group B cancelled
Nowadays, any marshal can make the phone call to stop a stage because some dumb fuck won't move from a dangerous position, and spectator areas can be so far from the road that the drivers don't know they're there
"There's a certain beauty in the things that scare us."
Still of the best episodes!
in 1986 a delta s4 drove a lap of a f1 track and would have qualified 6th that year. f1 speed through a forest!!! probably the greatest drivers of all time
It's a myth that has survived for way too long. Ayrton Senna did indeed test a Group B car but only on a dirt track and did NOT lap a F1 race track. While the Group B rally cars had up to 600hp in their last iterations (Audi S1 EvoII in 1986) the F1 cars had unrestricted turbo engines producing everything from 1100-1400 hp in qualifying trip in 1986. BMW's M10 engine was boosted up to 5,6 bars of boost (81psi) and produced 1400+ hp on the BMW dyno. There's no way a group B car could come anywhere near a F1 car at any racetrack. The F1 cars were also around 550kilos back in the mid 80's whereas even the lightest group B's were around 900 kilos.
And the incredibly grippy tires and huge wings F1 used would make it obvious to anybody the Group B wouldn't stand a chance other than in a drag race up to 100km/h (60mph).
That's a myth. But they did put the car in thr track. That Audi run happened at Estoril, Portugal (the dates of both events at the time - F1 GP and Rally Portugal - were relatively close).
On dirt right
As far as I know it would’ve qualified 6th on a wet F1 lap time? with the S4 still being ran on dry conditions.
@@zimutes It's probably what Mikkola was talking about in an interview. They lapped the same course, but with dirt on it, and he was 4 seconds slower than F1s (that's batshit crazy).
Ruined because *PEOPLE WONT STOP WALKING IN FRONT OF CARS ON THE TRACK*
Jeff Sine Hey, there's cars with tons of kinetic energy moving towards us! Let's stands on it's way! It's totally a great idea!
Seriously??? Even with nobody standing near the track, Group B rally stage could still killing all drivers and co-drivers because of the crazy amount of power that the drivers need to handle. If the car itself can't put all of the power down properly or the drivers could not maximize the potential of those machines, it's useless. I really love Group B rally, it really allows manufacturers to give everything that they got into a rally stage with less restrictions. But, after all that happened, it's just impossible to keep it exists until today. For us as the audiences, it's a huge fun. But, for the drivers etc, it's a very risky thing to do. Still, Group B rally will always be remembered as one of the best, most legendary, and most entertaining rally in the history of the motorsports
Lmao true, I can’t understand the people that don’t even stand behind a tree or anything for that matter (aside from other spectators!). I want to one day watch a WRC race but I’d never stand in a vulnerable position.
People lined the track, and even stood on the track, all trying to get pictures of the cars. They’d jump out of the way literally half a second off from being cut in half by those beasts of cars. Tons of people lined the outside of turns too, which is never a smart idea. I heard, and could be wrong, that the drivers were told not to stop if someone got in their way. That they had to keep going and finish the race no matter what. It was crazy and it’s so sad that it ended, but spectators ruined it for everyone else. In response to the above comment, the cars themselves had problems occasionally, but most of them were more than capable of putting the power down. It’s not the car that has the problems, it’s the driver. The drivers knew what they were getting in to, they don’t just send them out without any experience with the car. They willingly risked their life, they knew the risks. The spectators were the only main issue here
You clearly have no idea of how CROWDED the Portuguese rallies were in the 80's. On any given stage, all the stage would be full of spectators from the start to the finish line. There was simple no room for everyone and people wanted to be as close as possible. Here in Portugal rally is just as big as football
Yo, let's make cars out of plastic, give them 500 horsepower and drive them in narrow dirt roads at 200 km/h

Well he said it himself - some body parts were made out of fucking kevlar.

@Sparticus Booker Actually, if you watch his last interview, Toivonen compained of having a flu and fever. Also, he talked of how fast the car was ( 0-100 km/hr in 2.1sec). Don't forget he had won or led his previous 4 rallies, before disaster happened. His wife as well said that Lancia banned Toivonen from withdrawing from any rally. I think he was such good
I'm here from the future! Been going back through some of these older videos, and I have to say, this might be James' best video. I cant watch those Group B videos without f*king tears in my eyes, that was a proper competition of talent, engineering, courage.. the most brutal and beautiful time in automotive history. Just think, Audi could launch their 5 cylinder iron block powered monster from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds.. on a f*king GRAVEL.. in 1986?! Isn't that just completely insane? I would literally shit myself if I had a chance to drive one. And that brutal noise these engines made, it rips my soul out. If they just had more safety regards spectators, maybe the whole group would not get banned and God knows what achievements would come out of this.. That was a brilliant time.

It’s awesome to see Americans knowing and educating people about this sort of stuff, I love it! Little mistake at the beginning though: When you were talking about “Group A” as the era before Group B, what you’re actually talking about there is Group 4 (the days of the Fiat 131 Abarth, Lancia Stratos & Opel Ascona etc.) Group A actually came after Group B was banned in 1987 and included cars such as the Lancia Delta Integrale, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and the Toyota Celica GT-FOUR. Great video though! Subscribed 🤙🏼
Exactly even if actually Group A and B came at the same time then B was banned and rallying was then for Groups A and N only. VW Golf and Opel Kadett FWD were Group A racing along with Group B.

Funny story about group B:
last time there was a group B rally stage in Portugal (the place of the RS200 Crash) the lancia team "reportadly" went to the circuit of Estoril (near Sintra) to tune their rally cars. the fastest lancia did a fast enough time arround the tarmac circuit that it would place 6th in the same track's F1 GP
Alexandre Seixas I want to believe this but your "spelling" concerns me.
think its true, read this before
And the driver that did it was none other than the great Henri himself...
Love your stuff, including the podcast on Group B's Michele and their Lancia vs. Audi rivalry.
However, I'd love to hear James tackle the friction between the racers and the FIA following the Portuguese Rally incident with Santos crashing into and fatally injuring fans.
At the core of the Group B's final year was essentially a labor dispute, one that was so frantically challenged and straddled by both Lancia and the FIA, it lead to Toninoven's death. His quotes alone at the Tour de Corse had him basically acknowledging that he was probably going to die, driving while having the flu and having periodic blackouts.
I love Group B, but that is a very important storyline in it all.

2018 WRC cars are actually quite a bit faster than any Group B car, but what makes group B so special even till this day is the cheer visceral savagery the cars had, ask walter Rohrl.
They were renowned to be extremely hard to drive and quite terrifying even for the champs to master.
True, bear in mind they had no advanced computer simulation programs back in the 80's and really pushed the envelope of 80's technology. Performance took a giant leap at this time. The chassis, suspension, brakes and tires of the time couldn't cope with the insane power outputs of Group B cars and astute engineers and drivers had to find the best way to address that. There was no advanced computer telemetry either so real drivers had to be able to convey to the engineers what the cars handled like and what to improve. They were literally in uncharted waters back then and it really was up to the driver to explore the limits of the cars.
When Group A was introduced, there was an initial drop in average speeds, but by already by the end of 80s the cars were faster and have been faster ever since. This can be proven by comparing average stage times from a handful of stages that were run in consecutive years and changed very little.
The current (post-2017) WRC are not just faster than Group B, they are also most likely the fastest rally cars ever.
@@deggis4 Ah, someone with some sense
If group B existed today, the cars coming from it would match in performance with Huracan and 458 likely. Imagine it, a Focus beating a Lamborghini in anything!
@@deggis4 So nice to see someone else making this point. I've had this argument so many times on Group B videos with people who think Group B was the be-all and end-all. Many folks simply refuse to accept that the WRC cars could be faster, even when presented with evidence.

no one told those people to be there to watch the races, of course there was a lack of security and safety features on the circuits at that time, but you don't need to be a genious to know if someone goes off, the car will probably hit you!
and if you see videos from that time, people whould line up after a jump to see the cars fly over them.

I wonder how fast would be Group B And F1 today.
By F1 i mean times when you could put as huge turbo as you want, use a lot of engines, rev them to 20k And refuel it. With slick tires
In grup B we could just add some security to keep stupid people outside a track
stupid people that want to touch a car destroy everything again
Krzysztof Dolecki if f1 didn't change regulations since the 80s I reckon the cars today would easily be 10 seconds faster a lap then the current 2017 cars. Peak g force in cornering probably 7.5 and top speeds of 400+ easily. Imagine a car with 1500hp and weighing 600kg with extreme downforce and ground effects as well as advanced modern slicks extra wide.
once i read that Lancia S4 (turbo AND supercharged 1,8L) driven on tarmac, had lap time to qualify in second or third row in F1 championship of that era.
in the porsche museum is a f1 car that made 1800hp with a 1.8l v6. it was raw power, but you had the peplace the engine after every race
Tony Badivuk Top speed of 400+mph???
The laws of physics think otherwise, good luck getting ~350+ with rubber tires without centripetal force ripping them apart
Well, there was that one formula with giant fan generating a lot of downforce, but one of the problems was that the cornering G's were just too much on the driver.
Brabham BT46, I think it was that.
I think that people could easily build faster cars, but there is just limit to the human body.

This is the video that introduced me to Donut. Never looked back
I really love these videos! However, the predecessor of Group B as a top class of rallying was in fact Group 4. If I remember right, Gr. 4 required a car that had a minimum of 400 units produced, but otherwise it was pretty close to Group B. So the birth of the supercar era in rallying was more because of huge steps in technology at the time (4WD, turbochargers) and increasing budgets which led to more manufacturers developing new cars from scratch just to get the fastest possible rally car. A good example is Lancia's mid-engined Stratos, which was specifically developed for racing already in the early 70's - and the Audi Quattro was initially a Group 4 car too, as told in the video.
You're my new top gear.
5:58 how can you mention that without saying how they got there - from people touching the cars as they sped by at full race speed - that's how close people were to the cars - they could reach out and touch them
do f1 the killer years
actually? like fans severed fingers?
really, that's what people said back then. people would touch the car as it went by, sometimes getting wedged in the panel gaps/etc and it would rip it clean off

Back then the older technology to avoid turbo lag was that when cornering you should keep your foot on the throttle to keep that throttle body open so that the turbo to keep spooled up and never release it to slow down until you cross the finish line. Todays technology WRC uses is anti lag system of twin scroll turbo.

Jimbo! How's about a Group C video! Nothing in this world was or ever has been sexier than Group C/GTP sports cars! 🙌🙌
Keep bringing more hurspurs to the videos! 💪💪
Group B rallycars are still allowed but only during special events , shamed that WRC never gave them a chance to shine :(
In rally legend you can indeed
SennaOnline thats wat i meant , Special Events
Which means they're not pushing as hard because it's basically just an exhibition.
Sigma Projects well they are driving on street circuits , so they barely got enough room to fly
Yea, but now that it's paved hill climb records have improved a lot. It's just not the same, the tarmac really tamed it. I think it made it better for amateurs who want to do the climb.
Hey! Funny ass Donut Media...Corvette? Up to speed? Please? I like all your vids. I'm subbed too 😘✌
Young Roosevelt good choice.
I would love to see a vette up to speed.
That would actually be great, good idea!
Jason Wingate I'd think pretty big considering she's only been with black guys 😂😂😂 *ba dum tsst* I'm black by the way
Because the the story of Zora Arkus-Duntov needs to be told, man!
I'm no archaic fan but i don't think we will ever watch such crazy shit again. Holy f***. I'm so glad these existed.
Now you guys have to do group c!!! My favorite!
