  • My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
    This is the twenty-first video in a series of videos I have produced to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video we see the FTdx10 receiving SSB signals in unfavorable conditions. There is a high noise floor and static crashes from distant storms. The FTdx10 must also minimize interference from QRM at 2kHz away.

    Thank You for all the videos, very helpful. I have a FT 991 OG, I purchased it back in 2016. I really did not understand how to use contour or what it was for. I even did searches on the web. Your videos have really helped! I am a better operator now thanks to videos like yours and a few others. You are the only one that has explained the process of what is going on and how the radio was designed to be used. Starting with the IPO, ATT, gain, shift, width, and DSP. Understanding how these tools (functions) work and the order in which to use them, is so important.

      Hi Fred! Thank you for letting me know the videos have helped you. That’s my mission. I want us to leverage every option that our radios have to offer.
      Enjoy your FT-991. It is a boss of a radio. They’re becoming scarce now.
      Everything I showed in this video can be applied to your FT-991, and your FT-991 will do a great job of minimizing interference.

    So glad that I ran across this video. I'm a [relatively] new Amateur and a new DX10 operator. What you did here is exactly what I've been doing. So I suppose it's fairly intuitive. I don't usually run tighter than 2400 but maybe I'll try incorporating that into the routine. Yaesu's instructions are very detailed and do a good job of explaining "what" and "how." They don't do a very good job of explaining "why." (IMO) Thanks for the validation! 73

    Excellent sample thank you for that. Modern equipment has fantastic noise reductions but you have to be very careful you could have the storm above your head and not realize "HI" has already happened to me. Good Videos 73

    For that kind or static you should use NB ( Noise Blanker )

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому +1

      Noise Blanker doesn’t handle “static”. It isn’t designed to mitigate atmospheric or galactic noise. A noise blanker tracks pulse type noise (i.e. power line noise, ignition noise) and blanks out the receive chain to match the noise pulses. A NB is ineffective against static and lightning discharge noise.

    Doug, thanks for the shout out! 😊
    I have been wrestling with FT8 today on my FT891 using the ZLP MiniPro SC.
    I wonder if you might consider an episode on configuring the 891 and WSJT-X for FT8 operation?
    I am particularly keen to understand what settings should be altered within the 891 itself. I am very concerned not to change anything that will interfere with my ability ti work SSB.
    Ideally I would like to seamlessly switch between those two modes, without having to dive into menus.

      I will check with my brother. He knows more about FT8 than I do. I mostly work with CW and SSB. I will see what I can find out though.

      I shall stick to SSB. Until I learn CW of course 😊🤘

    Lovely radio, I have the SUN SDR 2 DX while it's a great radio all the messing about with software isn't my thing, I long to have a radio with buttons again that just works and works when you don't want to have a computer turned on so I'm thinking of trading it for the FTDX-10
    Those that have such a large chunk of 80m are very lucky, here in Europe it ends at 3.8 Mhz and it can be chaos.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  2 роки тому +1

      I didn’t know the European operators couldn’t transmit above 3.8 MHz. That means General class amateurs in the USA cannot work you guys. That’s unfortunate. I guess that explains why I’ve always worked European stations around 3.795 +/-.
      The FTdx10 is a hybrid. I think it represents a near perfect marriage of superheterodyne technology with SDR technology, yielding the advantages of each. Plus, the Yaesu DSP is one of the best, if not the best. And you get knobs and buttons - not as many as the FTdx101D or MP, but more knobs and buttons than a computer-controlled SDR.

      @@n4hnhradio 3775-3800 is priority for intercontinental communication.
      Yes, I've often heard U.S Hams clearly above 3800 but sadly all I can do is listen. I've often heard U.S Hams below 3800 of course and talked to them. It would be real nice though to be able to use above 3800 Khz.
      Yeah I have the SUN SDR and while it's a really great radio I got to say I miss a normal radio with buttons and the ability to be able to use it when I don't want the computer on or have to wait for it to boot so I'm considering exchanging it for the FTDX-10.

    Just for craps and giggles. Is there any way I can install something in between my computer and transceiver so that I can play sound effects on air?
    I'm getting into communications and I just want to know how that works.

    • @n4hnhradio

      It is illegal to play sound effects on amateur radio.
