    My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
    This is the thirty-fourth video in a series of videos I have produced to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video I show how to assign the MPVD function via the Custom Select button. There is also some bonus footage about the advantage of SSB modulation versus Amplitude Modulation (AM). The Waterfall display can be used as a great visual aid to illustrate the difference between USB and LSB.
    WARNING! At the time this video was produced it wasn't yet widely known that certain, if not most, DVI-D to HDMI adapters could cause damage to the FTdx10 video output circuit. As radios were returned to Yaesu for repair, it was determined that the adapters used were back-feeding a voltage to the video output circuitty within the FTdx10, causing premature failure. I DO NOT recommend using any adapter. Find a monitor with a native DVI-D connection and use a DVI-D to DVI-D cable.

    Thanks for the video Doug. Just got my DX10 set up 2 days ago and have gone over 10 of your videos since then. Thank you! I am an amateur operator for 45 years who just got his first SDR (well, superhet SDR). I chose the FTDX-10 over the FT-710 since I am a CW op, and with the current promotion of $200 rebate, the 300 HZ CW filter was basically free and most reviews favored the FTDX-10 for CW. My last new radios were an FT-857 for mobile and a Ten-Tec Orion for HF, both long gone. I have been mostly QRT for the past 10 years operating remote stations (with a computer) with some home QTH use of my son's Elecraft K1. Thus, SDR's, waterfalls, etc., are a new world to me, and this video is SO helpful not only for explaining much of this but also giving clues to the C.S. button, the MFVD ring, the front end IPO, ATTEN, etc. The functionality/price of these radios (and I include the IC7300) just blow me away. I will check out your other videos. I don't do subscriptions, e.g. Patreon stuff, but if you do "Buy Me a Coffee", I will - de KE5C

    This is my very first receiver since getting my general ticket, and gotta admit I really like it. But your video sure makes things look/sound nicer! I appreciate your tutorial. Dumb question, but how do you change bands? What antenna do I need to be able to change bands? I currently have a JPC-12, so I have the coil on a specific band. Thank you for your help.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому +1

      I change bands by tapping the Band button or by operating from memory mode and using memory tune.
      3 of my antennas are resonant on multiple bands without requiring an antenna matching unit. My doublet antenna system is only resonant on the 17m band. On bands that require an antenna matching unit, I use the Elecraft “antenna tuner” (antenna matching unit) that is internal to my Elecraft amplifier. The antenna matching unit receives the band change data from the radio via a special cable from Elecraft. As I change bands, the antenna matching unit instantly recalls the settings for that band. I cover this in the “Ultimate Automation” videos. Look for the Elecraft playlists.

    Hi, just found your channel and am thinking of getting this rig to upgrade my 450D. Question is, can I use a DVI to HDMI adapter cord to run an external monitor without issues? As you know, most newer computer monitors are all HDMI, at least the cheaper ones are.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  19 днів тому +1

      Yaesu doesn’t recommend an adapter. Many FTdx10 transceivers have been sent to Yaesu for the $800 repair. Some have chanced it and found an adapter that seemed to work for a few months before the port on the radio failed. Others have reported success for 2-3 years. If you want to risk it, the time to do so is while you have the 3-year warranty backing you.

    Thank you for the video. I saw your waning about HDMI but Yaesu put out a video showing how to hook up to either a monitor (DVI to DVI) or to a TV (DVI to HDMI). Does your information say that using a HDMI under any circumstances could damage the Radio? Thanks again

    • @n4hnhradio

      Unless there is very recent information from Yaesu that I missed, they have yet to officially say there is any adapter that will work. HRO even states a warning on their Web site. But it’s confusing. Scroll down the FTdx10 page to the bottom. You will see an adapter at the bottom. Click on it. Scroll to the bottom and read the warning, “cannot be used with Yaesu FTdx10.” So why does HRO even list it in the first place?
      There is some information from Tim Factor (Yaesu support) at this link: groups.io/g/ftdx-10/message/1265
      Some have reported success with a specific adapter, only to have their radio fail in 6 months.
      The official answer I’ve heard from Yaesu is to read the manual. It states DVI-D to DVI-D. I connected a DVI-D monitor in April of 2021 and it has worked fine ever since.

      I would suggest that you ask Yaesu UK to provide the exact part number for the DVI-D to HDMI cable they show in the video. Is it possible to set to DX10 averaging? Like on Icom? Or is the spectroscope still oscillating so fast? Thank you

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому +1

      The processor in the FTdx10 is fast enough to provide fast transient response. There is no need for averaging. So Yaesu did not include that option. With averaging, you see a noise floor with signals rising up from the noise. Once you set the scope level the way I show, you only see signals, with no noise floor. You can know that everything on the display is a signal.

    • @JacobNewmen
      @JacobNewmen Рік тому

      @@n4hnhradio I'm sure that since the x6100 can also set and display the rationing, it won't be so much about the processor, but about the fact that someone at Yaesu didn't think that this option, first of all, will greatly improve the feeling of watching the display, and averaging is mainly used to make the peaks short signals like two or one words that someone says into the microphone, which you don't even notice in this vibrating madhouse. They were held at their peak for a while on the spectroscope, giving the operator a chance and time to analyze whether they wanted to focus on it or not, thanks to this feature I've already found a lot of interesting catches that I wouldn't have noticed with the Yaesu, because it would have been displayed in hundredths seconds. However, when someone at Yaesu didn't even think there were big guys with big hands who could barely fit a finger between the VFO and the function selector. Something like really using the potential of the display, instead of the disco, is a small thing, I would have had the radio a long time ago, but these are such essentials that I would rather buy the IC7300, which is older and therefore slightly worse in terms of parameters, but at least it gives conceptual logic and in the control and style of the concept of how the operator should perceive the display of the frequency range in front of him. The only chance is to service the FTDX10 and output the signal for an external SDR and use a completely different software for control, one that makes sense, I can't imagine connecting a monitor to that radio and looking at some data and a disco that he won't tell me anything except the waterfall. Sometimes I don't understand why manufacturers don't invite selected operators from all categories such as DXers, competitors, listeners, etc. and ask them how they would imagine an ideal radio, I believe that even through the certainly ambitious ideas of all of them, they would arrive at a realistic concept of a super TCVR, which would not suffer from school ailments. PEACE

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому +1

      Enjoy the IC-7300. I don’t hate that radio. I don’t even like Yaesu as a company. I don’t think they like me much either. I am critical of them. Admittedly , I am critical in areas that I think are important. I’m not going to quibble with them over minor quirks. I don’t quibble with them over display related things, because displays are not important to me. I can pick out weak signals with my ears, from experience and knowing where to look, and by tuning my VFO.
      Yaesu doesn’t make perfect radios. But no company does. I pick the radio that best suits my operating style. At the moment Yaesu has radios that meet my needs in most areas, even if I don’t care for Yaesu the company.
