This going to sound way out in left field, but hear me out:
Schoolhouse Rock was many 70s & 80s kids' introduction to jazz, gospel, blues, country, and much more, often in various fusions. I know the original songwriters had a LOT of experience writing ad jingles as well as cutting their own albums, but how the heck are these songs so full of hooks & earworms that they are still THAT catchy 40-50 years later?

Unrelated to any of this but I just wanted to say how I appreciate you guys being knowledgeable but also humble. As someone who’s a self taught guitarist and songwriter whenever I try watching videos by professionals they seem to just completely trash all music just because it’s popular if it isn’t too complex musically but you guys give your knowledge while suggesting other reasons why people may gravitate to a song such as a vocal melody or production. Y’all are still honest when something isn’t your type of music but you don’t do it in the sense of saying it’s wrong that a lot of people like it because it’s a simple chord progression or something like that. My favorite artists of all time are tori Amos, Elliot smith, and Joni Mitchell, but I’ve been a big Taylor Swift fan since I was 5 and I’m now 18. If I only thought that the music worth listening to used a billion different chord changes or things like that than I would have quit guitar because in the beginning I wouldn’t have been able to practice songwriting or learn my favorite songs. Having simple 4 chord songs that still have meaningful lyrics is what kept me playing guitar and so many of my first songs were standard 1-5-6-4. If I didn’t start with that than I never would have improved as a lyricist which is usually my favorite part of songs, not necessarily the music.

As far as the sampling and culture around it I remember when we did the Beck mellow Gold album back in the very early 90s, that we thought we would be able to in a post-modern way recontextualize everything, and the licensing for that was apparently a nightmare when we went to Geffen.

I am a new listener to this channel. It has me wondering what current musicians think about the first era of hugely known guitar players. Specifically players like Duane Eddy, Link Wray, and Dick Dale.

Same concept discussed in the vocal harmony of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams and how cover bands sometimes miss those subtleties: About 10 years ago I saw the latest iteration of Little River Band in a casino and on one of their biggest hits, Lady, the guy doing the high harmony part went all the way up to the 1 on the coolest part where he was supposed to stay on the major 7. I was so disappointed.
