  • If Tom Cross hadn’t produced a can of rubbing compound and a shop rag 18 months ago, this episode wouldn't exist. In this episode of "Barn Find Hunter," Tom Cotter gets to carry out his childhood dream by reviving a desert junkyard car. I've parted out a few and, admittedly felt a little guilty when I sent the shell away, but when a car isn't desirable, is a rust bucket and either has no engine or the engine is stuck, there's not much reason to keep it around. But at least get all the useable bits off it first!

    McPherson College sounds like the beginning of an excellent career path for young people to learn usable skills that can make them a ton of money. There is huge demand for skilled vehicle restorers these days. If I was a college age man or woman, that's where I'd want to invest my time and money. I'm sure it pays off big time for those who are dedicated to learn the trade.
    It's difficult just to find and auto body shop these days to repaint a classic car. I've received quotes of anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 to repaint my '65 Ford Galaxie 500 and it's a convertible, so there's no top to paint! And that's only when I can find body shops willing to do the job. Most say they won't touch old classic cars. They just want to replace parts and repaint the newer crashes.

    • @Someguy6571
      @Someguy6571 5 років тому +2

      I agree. My 1969 Thunderbird needs quarters replaced and the paint is all faded. I have gone through so many shops and all they want to do is collision. To them there is no money in restoration.

    • @paulallison6689
      @paulallison6689 5 років тому

      A big part of why most shops don't wanna do restorations on old cars is simply due to the fact that they take alot of time to complete & they sit around taking up space for a lengthy period of time (whether they're inside or outside of the shop) & they tend to get in the way oftentimes...plus the hassle of having to shuffle 'em back & forth from inside to outside & vice-versa numerous times during the lengthy process.

      And that's precisely why we need more trained auto restoration shops. We already have plenty of crash repair shops.

    I have a 63 Country Sedan which has pretty much every option available. Factory black with red interior 9 passenger, factory A/C (spits ice), roof rack, 390-4V, deluxe wheel covers with whitewalls, dead stock except glass packs and twice pipes/tips under the bumper but now needs restoration. Built in late Aug of '63 with C3AE-G 427 Low Riser heads. Bought from original owner in the 80's with dealer paperwork and every single receipt for every single part he put on that car until I got it.

    Was loving ever aspect of this except painting over rust (fad is dying but not fast enough) . Then came using it as a parts runner car with young kids driving it. What could go wrong? Thinking there was a good reason they are using a horrible little disposable pick up. No one cares when you run into stuff

    Amazing... Bravo! And every old car in that yard or the world for that matter, deserves its dignity and soul restored just like this one! And if the cost is too high for a particular old lady... damn that... there should be a fund established to see that all are preserved. Crushing? Should be a federal crime. Congratulations... most pleasing episode to watch!
    PS: Can detect my enthusiasm for the old and shunned. Old cars are like old dogs to me... such dignity and patience residing within.
    PPS: Ok, I'll stop now.

    Fantastic episode Tom !
    This one holds a special place in my heart. I grew up with the same 62 Ford Country Squire wagon.
    My folks bought her brand new.
    She was black, with woodgrain sides, and a red interior.
    My sister and I used to ride in the way back at night, and lay on our backs to look at the stars.
    No way you can do that anymore!
    You never see the old wagons hardly anymore. Thanks for saving this one.
    Great idea to donate her to the College too.
    Please, keep the videos coming.
    They're awesome

    I've always liked the body styling on the 1960 Fords. They were very unique and ahead of their time aerodynamically. Those flat fins are killer, too. I've owned 3 of them over the years. Very well built cars.

    Wow! Talk about memories... We came to the US from Argentina when I was 10 years old in 1965, lived in Martinez, California. My dad was 39 years old, originally from northern Italy and had never driven or owned a car. First car he bought was an aqua blue 1962 Ford Country Sedan, 390 V8 Cruise-o-Matic transmission, 8 passenger(the last seat faced backwards). That car could move even though it only had a two barrel carb. I did my first oil change on it at 12. A few years later at 19 I bought a 1964 Country Squire, turned it into my surfmobile, folded down the back seat, foam and carpet and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light". Peace!

    • @shackman9566
      @shackman9566 4 роки тому

      Its up to us as parents to teach our children about our history. The level of quality and craftmanship that went into building cars and most everything was meant to last. The truth is the way cars are marketed today there are so many that are just sitting on lots with inflated price tags. The pump this junk out like bic lighters and for the most part there not worth much more than that. The whole industry is upside down.

    • @flinch622
      @flinch622 4 роки тому

      But... did they have more than a half paragraph in their history book on Ulysses Grant? But that's another story. The deal here is put in some money and time to get a ride that is DONE with depreciation. No investment loses money faster than a car in that 5-10 year window after production, and the first 15 years [with truly rare exceptions] is all losses. The trick with a project car of course is... you gotta teach the kids all about carburetors. Have fun.
