Alberta wildfires: Jasper National Park blaze reaches townsite, multiple structures on fire

- Images of destruction emerged from one of the most popular and scenic destinations in Alberta as a wildfire reached the mountain town of Jasper.
The fire inside Jasper National Park arrived at the townsite the evening of Wednesday, July 24, 2024, less than an hour some first responders and essential workers were evacuated because the situation had become too dangerous to stay.
The air quality then deteriorated to the point that wildland firefighters and others without self-contained breathing apparatuses needed to evacuate to Hinton, some 50 kilometres east of Jasper.
The fire burned too fast and fierce to be stopped, despite the efforts to build fire guards and drop water.
One hotel in town, Maligne Lodge, was destroyed. Across the Athabasca River, the world-renowned and picturesque Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge was also affected by the fire, although the extent of the damage there was not yet known.
Firefighters from across Alberta were deploying to help and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said federal supports were being sent in, including the Canadian Armed Forces.
Lisa MacGregor reports from the area with the latest.

This makes me so incredibly sad this morning. At a loss for words. Jasper has been so important to me throughout my life. This news is really a gut punch.
As long as no one gets hurt everything will be fine, most people in the area have 4 or 5 other properties they can move into.
I fully agree, can not stop tears. So many years of loving to go there and such a special place just gone😭
Hopefully this helps Canadians understand that we need to change if we want this to stop, and that it's still possible if we do.
Same here, many memories throughout life. Can't imagine fighting these fires is such heat, must be horrible.
It's one of my favourite places too. It is so sad to think about Jasper Park Lodge and any other structures that are being lost. 😢
Born and raised there. Heartbroken. My heart home.
As teens, my best friend and I hitchhiked across Canada to spend the summers of 1971 and 1972 camped beside the pristine Athabasca River. The town of Jasper meant so much to us and changed our lives forever. I'm heartbroken.
I’m from Costa Rica and 12 years ago I moved to Jasper. Lived and worked there for almost 5 years. This is the place where I made some of my best memories of my life , friends and where I also met the love of my life. Breaks my heart to see what’s happening to a place I once called home.
Stay strong but most importantly, stay safe.
Huge rain last night. Thick cloying yellow smoke now. No wind. More rain expected today.
I was searching for this. Thank you. I seen the radar for jasper last night and was praying for lots of rain last night. This is good news and hope for many. Bless you for posting this comment.

First the mountain pine beetle came through, killing hundreds of thousands of trees around the town. Now fire is coming through, and those trees are just so many torches. And they're all around, north, south, east and west of the town.
Good point, forgot about this
More like the feds came through and torched everything. Wake up people. You’ve been attacked. Time to fight back.

Absolutely devastating. Prayers for the firefighters and the families that have homes in jasper as well as business owners.
This breaks my heart. I went to Jasper two years ago. Such a beautiful park and quaint little town. I have wonderful memories from that trip. I hope most of it can be saved
I visited the park three weeks ago. The trees that died from the Pine Beetle infestation 5 years ago were still there up on the hills. Parks Canada never removed them. They became part of the landscape to the point where regular visitors just didn’t notice them anymore. Obviously they added to the intensity of the fire.
You think after last year, they would make a real effort to remove the deadwood to avoid making any future fires possible or worse.
But now people will blame this on climate change like this is the reason a wildfire is raging here or anywhere else.
damn 😔
And if they had removed them, you'd be whining about how much it cost...
My heart is there with you.

Living in Banff for almost 30 years, this has always been a worry of mine that it’ll happen here…
It's only a matter of time for Banff. The provincial and federal governments don't care about protecting these towns with water bombers or preventative measures.
Yep they just leave all the fuel sitting there. It's pathetic.
@@elephantom12Why doesn't the government care about protecting Banff? Are they on record stating as much? What should they be doing to prevent Banff from burning?
Alberta is a rich province and with the number of fires we get every summer this Province should have a Provincially owned fleet of fleet if Canadair water bombers
That would stop the plan though??
It's a federal park and Ottawa robs Alberta of tens of billions of dollars every year. Give Alberta the parks and our money then you can complain about what Alberta did or didn't do.
It would if they listened back in 2017 ot if we didn't give 12 billion yo ukraine that's 300 water bombers for the country smh
And those water bombers need permission to be deployed in the National Parks.
There are many deficiencies that need to be corrected.
For one, you can't have someone from another part of the country making uninformed decisions about our National Parks. Nature doesn't work that way. Give a local body more authorty when working with a national body regarding risk management in our national parks.
Pledging help only after a region is destroyed ridiculous.

@@Mykst So who/what is responsible for that bone-dryness, and what should have been done about it to prevent this fire?
@@imacmill Well the dry conditions are what you'd call a *drought* - caused by a severe lack of rain in the area. The prevention? It’s ironic we never used to have these crazy fires every single year until Trudeau took office and has since been cutting funding to firefighting and has just recently this year sold off 7 of our water bombers. “Predicted” yet the government does nothing
A bear cub being electrocuted and starting the fire has been observed and expected?
Should we ban bears? Or maybe electricity?
Wasn't the carbon tax supposed to eliminate forest fires😂?
Not yet.

Prayer is useless.
I feel for the people of Jasper. 😢
Why did the Alberta Government wait so long to ask for help? Kind of stupid on their part. So sad.
Do you understand how many wildfires are on the go in Alberta right now and how fast these things move? Think.
@@bs9710i really don't think this is true . Every National park is still in a province. So you know this is true or feel this is true?
@@Grubbbee National Parks, under the jurisdiction of the Federal Govt, is a factual statement.
Parks Canada mismanagement on display...
If only our PM didn't send over 100 billion to Ukraine, should be taking care of Canada first. So sad.
Well, we never send 100billion.
@@joeisawesome540They've sent over 10 billion which pales in comparison to wildfire funding. Not sure why you would stick up for a government that cares more about a foreign war than its own people.
@@joshanderson924 well, I stick with a government that cares about people having bombs landing on their head? Do you not care? Btw, we spend billions of dollars each year to fight fire.
@@joshanderson924 btw, we didn’t give any money to Ukraine in 2021, and fire was just as bad! You think giving money to Ukraine is making our forest fires bad? Plus, we spend over 1 billion dollar a year to fight fires. There is no set budget for fire fighting. It is used as the needs are required. So some year it is over 1 billion and other year is less than 1 billion. Please learn how government works?
@@joeisawesome540 well said , So many people still don't believe the climate is changing and effecting all area's of Canada , , They need to look at there own Alberta Government
The CEO's of Buffalo Air and AIRSPRAY wanted to send water bombers to the Jasper Forest Fire to assist in containing the fire, but the federal government rejected the request nor gave them any contracts.
The gov't should have taken these fires more seriously.
wasn't carbon tax to be used for some of this
they want the country to burn
These fires are from DEW’s and are being purposely set. Wake up.
@@Bryan-dn1nx NOPE, you don't get the function of the carbon tax..
@@Bryan-dn1nx You should really get educated on the intent and the eventual effect of the tax many years into the future. Not today. Simple reading.
Incredibly sad! These towns keep burning down and yet we keep building pipelines... Shame on us.
In other news, it has rained every single day in Ontario this summer.
Why aren't they cloud seeding ???
Oprah wants to buy land in the Jasper area. Let's give her donations so she can buy land.

No it actually hasn't. Get lost with your lies, bot.
Such a sad news! I love Jasper so much and this makes my heart break.😢

Literally we have these harsh fires every single year now ever since Justin Trudeau took office and just a few months ago sold off 7 of our water bombers to Greece.
