Came here for an 07 Ford five hundred. Can confirm, those metal tab lock rings are a nightmare. Slamming on it with a hammer and punch, it's not even moving. I'm starting to remove material from the top of the fuel tank and paused to research. Looks like next weekends project now
Just got a 1/2 30 inch long flex head ratchet from matco, used rust penetrate and the metal lock ring wedge for those ford escape fuel pump module recalls. Worked out great
CTA1044 is the best one for Toyota. Sold out everywhere though, at my dealership everyone one borrows mine, we have the fuel pump recall out right now 😩
Up here I just treat them like sway bar links, if I have to touch them they get replaced. But sometimes you can't get them, so I use the air hammer and hope there is something left.
Lisle just came out with a new kit with interchangeable ends for the plastic rings or the metal lock rings. Got mine coming from matco and I'm very excited.
On the plastic tanks with the screw on lock rings. I always you the oil filter pliers. The jaws have like a cut out in them and it grabs onto it perfect.
Some Hyundai have an offset access hole in the trunk. Can get with an air hammer, but is a pain. The tools are nice to have. I have 3 different tools. Trusty 30" harbor freight breaker bar works every time. Good video. A lot of independent techs don't know about these tools.
come to ny and see what those lock rings look like! lol i usually use a air hammer with short bursts (yes i know i could cause a spark which in theory could cause an explosion) every one gets a new lock ring here. funny though as bad as i have seen some lock rings the tangs on the tanks seem to hold up.
Honda uses the metal lock rings as well. Some of them r so tight i usually use my bar for tension and then get another tech to give it a tap with a punch and it goes not too bad bit still stubborn
@@flatratemaster wow really!? Around here when you call the dealer and order a "fuel pump" they also send you the "installation kit." That includes but is not limited to the fuel tank, fuel lines, brake lines, pads rotors and calipers, and so on.... 😂 I'm telling you Mike you don't know what you're missing up here in the salt belt 😏
I'm having a problem right now, I got the old one off and bought a new oem one and I can't get the new one to go on all the way? I had to order one of these tools just to help reinstall it.
Hammer and chisels all I ever use. I'm a Ford tech and work primarily on the trucks so all I ever see are the metal ones. Best way I've found is clean it good and spray Wd40 and it moves easy though I don't deal with rust here.
The plastic lock ring on Chrysler products, have to make sure it starts straight too. They are easy to crossthread not careful doing it.The metal locking rings like to rust away too needing to be replaced too
Those ford ones are easy with prybar and hammer , one hit for me .. some can use a hammer better than others . Work in a machine shop a few years and you develop different skills
Done many Chevrolet cars with that wedge style, 🙄 they are somewhat as bad tightening as undoing. 3guys. 3 prybars and 3 hammers at different points to lock it down 🙄 never had it that bad.
Can't vouch for the others but sorry to say from my experience that the first tool sucks for me. Ita made to grab onto the plastic tabs but the plastic tabs are so thin the tool hardly grabs on. With enough force it usually slips off. I usually end up taking them off with really big pliers. Each to their own though.

My weapon of choice? Air Hammer.
Same here buddy, use mine for everything lol
Rambo is on the house 💪💪💪💪i bet you shave with a machete to 😅😅😅 wherever needs to get the job done an fast
Same
I dream of some day reusing a lock ring😂 greetings from indiana
Ironically the issue I’m having is getting the lock ring back on
Did u figure it out
Just got a 1/2 30 inch long flex head ratchet from matco, used rust penetrate and the metal lock ring wedge for those ford escape fuel pump module recalls. Worked out great
A large pair of channel lock pliers for that 1st style you were talking about or a flat head screwdriver & a hammer is all I’ve ever needed 😅
CTA1044 is the best one for Toyota. Sold out everywhere though, at my dealership everyone one borrows mine, we have the fuel pump recall out right now 😩
Start charging snacks
that toyota one is pretty nice.
Up here I just treat them like sway bar links, if I have to touch them they get replaced. But sometimes you can't get them, so I use the air hammer and hope there is something left.
one of the over looked tools and a must have, have a great weekend Sir

On really stuck ones, I get a helper who hits on one side as I do the other.

On the steel ones up in the rust belt, air hammer them off and every pump gets a new lock ring, have had to just cut them off to get the pump out.
How do u do that without creating sparks tho
Great Video. Is there a certain torque range for tightening the plastic ring for a 2008 mazda 3?
Helpful video. Thank you Flat Rate Master.
Digging the Lagavulin hat. Nice rep!
Honda uses the metal lock rings as well. Some of them r so tight i usually use my bar for tension and then get another tech to give it a tap with a punch and it goes not too bad bit still stubborn
For those plastic ring or caps I use the biggest oil pliers I have after spray some wd40 it works so far
Pfff... air hammer is the only thing I have ever used lol
But no one here in the south stocks lock rings, last time i needed a lock ring it took 2 days to get

My air chisel with the splitter bit works on all of them so far

Lock rings! Lock rings! lock rings!
Yeah I've been procrastinating on buying these for years...luckily whenever I do a fuel pump I'm able to get it off😏
Hammer and chisels all I ever use. I'm a Ford tech and work primarily on the trucks so all I ever see are the metal ones. Best way I've found is clean it good and spray Wd40 and it moves easy though I don't deal with rust here.
So far I've gotten by with a hammer and a large screw driver. But most of the lock rings I do are so rusted out that they need to be replaced any way.
If also works for HyundaiTucson. Where can buy one like this tool please?
The first adjustable tool is a Lock Technology LT-940 available at various places including Matco
Astro makes one too. Part number 4980 😏
the biggest channellocks you have lol! best tool!
Haha fun removing lock rings said
NOONE EVER. lol
The tool co. must pay the car makers to change them all the time.
The plastic lock ring on Chrysler products, have to make sure it starts straight too. They are easy to crossthread not careful doing it.The metal locking rings like to rust away too needing to be replaced too
Early model Ford Focus were easy to cross thread too. You had to hold the spring loaded pump down while making sure the lock ring was straight . Pita
Thanks.
When I need to remove a pesky lock ring on a fuel pump, I reach for my trusty "Big Nasty" and nice sharp chisel tip.
That's what I'm sayin....
I personally use the hammer and bearing race chisel on the steel one's.
How about a video on air chucks with gauges? What do you use and which ones you would recommend
He doesn't use air lol
Maxwell Peter how else would you fill tires?
Nitrogen fill stations
@behexen250 yep thats why i said he doesn't use air followed by lol
MAN whatever happened to just using a metal ring and #2 or 3 Jis to secure it down
Those ford ones are easy with prybar and hammer , one hit for me .. some can use a hammer better than others . Work in a machine shop a few years and you develop different skills
Use 2 knipex cobras and an assistant on the metal ones.
I prefer my weak little air hammer. Very controlable. Just rust belt things lol
Wish I could post a picture of a Polaris fuel pump tool
A chisel/punch and a hammer 😂😂
You really gotta heat those metal rings up with a torch a little. 🔥🧨🧯
This is a great Idea. I am going to try this right now!
Make sure you use the stuff in the tank as a rust penitent because pb blaster will eat fuel lines
@@maxwellpeter1598 I am normally replacing fuel lines all the way up to the engine as well.
@@frugalprepper it was a joke to weed out the dumb ones it goes with ted and his torch
Good
Very usefl
I like to call it a pry bar and a hammer.
Done many Chevrolet cars with that wedge style, 🙄 they are somewhat as bad tightening as undoing. 3guys. 3 prybars and 3 hammers at different points to lock it down 🙄 never had it that bad.
Those metal rings are pain in the ass.

I just use air hammer
thumbs up shared yup fords suck need the tool most of the time lol
I hate those things never enough room to use em
This is a weird video because I just had to buy one and I work at a ford dealer 🙄
behexen250 I like that idea much better than spending 100 dollars on the matco truck
Uh[+
