My late night rig is a dsl20hr through a blackheart 1x12 cab with an eminence governor and an egnater 1x12 with whatever proprietary celestion they use. I don't really boost it but I run mostly modulation effects on my pedal board. I did change out all the preamp tubes for tung sol 12ax7s and instead of el34s I'm running 6ca7 power tubes. It's one of my favorite amps and it really has that marshall grind.
I have a modded Peavey Rage. On a 1x12 cab, I can get the cops called from the next street over (loud enough to play with a drummer) and mic'd up, you can't tell its a 'practice' amp.
Mr. Angus Orvid, Good Sir. I have the Marshall dsl 1 watt (for I live in a condo) head, running through a 1×12 Egnator cab. Was going to get the DSL20 watt, but all that was in stock was that 1 watt tube dsl. You know the supply line is quite broken right now. The dsl 1 watt can actually go down to a quarter watt. I can turn it up a little more to get that awesome Marshall crunchy goodness without bothering my neighbors. I use a PRS se custom and I truly love this particular set up. It has gain, more then enough. The clean channel is a little tinny. I bet that pedal on the clean channel would get me a different sounding distortion. But I would like to try that petal and go thru the effects loop like the video was explaining. Maybe for Christmas I'll try to get myself one. I love the DSL line up. Have a great day. Stay safe.
I am using a Real Tube overdrive pedal by Tube Works through my rig currently, & it sounds amazing. I first bought one in around 1990 when it first came out, & I was running it through a cheap Crate solid state amp at the time, which like you said, it had a great sounding clean tone, but the distortion channel didn’t sound great. I then upgraded to a Marshall Artist half stack, & sold the pedal since I didn’t seem to have a need for it. Years later(about 15 years ago) I wanted one again, & was lucky enough to find a used on on EBay. It’s an original Made in the USA model. I believe they still make them, but I think the company changed hands & now they’re made in Taiwan. The pedal had actually been sitting around for awhile, cuz it didn’t seem to sound good through any of my amps. I have a solo “acoustic” act, which I use backing tracks of bass, drums & keys, & I would run my pedalboard straight into my PA via direct box, & play both acoustic & electric guitar through it. I liked using the Real Tube, cuz it basically added a tube channel to the head, & the distortion sound I got through it with my electric guitar was pretty decent. I’ve basically used that setup for the last 10 years. Recently I purchased a Fender Blues Junior tube amp, & have been running my pedalboard with the Real Tube as my main high gain distortion pedal through it, & it sounds amazing. For lighter distortion or basic crunch I use a Tube Screamer. I also have a Vox AC15, & I got an AB/Y splitter & plan to use both amps in tandem. With that & the rest of my effects in my board, my rig has never sounded better or fuller!
This is extremely impressive. I've always wanted something like this made. Absolutely perfect for my Fender Bassman amp. It's completely tube driven with 4 10" speakers and 4 input(secret is to cross the inputs for maximum sound) but the only way to get any gain from it is to keep turning the volume up. So it gets way too loud, and not enough gain distortion. Beautiful sounding amp, but with a pedal like this, it would be an ultimate stage amp. Seems like I haven't seen a video from you in like 30 years lol
I just learned of these guys and ordered the bootlegger spade guitar in Clear Blue HH! I cant wait to have the perfect travel guitar for my work in the military, will be nice being able to play even on the go.
Once again, Max great presentation! This pedal is not a new concept, it has predecessors going all the way back to the 80's, most notably with the Chandler Tube Driver. The tube powered distortion pedal I own, and to me, it's the greatest, most adjustable, and most powerful one I have ever seen, is the Radial ToneBone Hot British Distortion. I can set it to have just a bit of gain, to all out "Godzilla Tours Tokyo" raging metal monster! I haven't found any distortion/overdrive pedal that can stand toe to toe, let alone approach it for the sound it puts out. However, I do want to say that this pedal does what its manufacturer says it can do, it has a good, strong, powerful sound, and I'm glad you pointed out the different methods to hook it up to an amp. I think it's well worth the price, especially if you can customize it with options on the controls for a personal touch. My ToneBone is my precious baby, but if I were shopping for a pedal that put out "JCM 800 In A Box", today, this one would be at the top of my list.
That pedal looks very cool, I use a Carvin Legacy Drive VLD1 pedal. It has two 12ax7 tubes, 2 channels with a boost mode and independent EQs for each channel. Its all I need for a good sound through any amp or headphones. Good video!

Wow Max, but for the notion that I'm perfectly satisfied by my NU X Plexi Crunch stomp, this pedal would definitely appeal to me. It's not tube based per se, but it does most of what this model bolsters.
I swear by tube-based pedals. I have been using them since 1988. I recently replaced my Chandler Tube Driver with a Hughes & Kettner Tub Factor which is some of the best distortion I have ever heard and TC Electronic Tube Pilot ($69) which probably isn’t for you Metal folks….but it will turn almost any amp into a spongey old Fender Tweed and is SO sensitive that even adjusting the pickup height a little bit makes a noticeable difference in the sound.
I have the larger tubeman II, if it weren't for the huge size and the spotty quality of the ac adapter, I'd use it live without question. I like that the clean channel has a dedicated volume, thereby making gain staging not only possible but very musical. Warms up your tone real nice. The rhythm channel was just about the best damn tone I've heard from a pedal and the leads really cut through without sounding harsh. I feel like I have a good thing going with my leqtique 11/11, it's the only thing that gets close to it. Brilliant pedal as well.
I always enjoy your videos, Max. Awesome playing, as always ! \m/ As for the pedal, I'm having a hard time with something my mom once taught me. "If you can't say anything good about something, don't say anything at all". So I will just leave it at that 😉

Reminds me of my 'Metal Monster' tube pedal. I use my old Peavey Basic 60 bass combo as my guitar amp, great clean sound but needed more, the Metal Monster really turned it on.
This pedal sounds amazing. My only concern is that it is run through a vacuum tube, and as we all know tubes need to be handles with care. I wonder how it holds up to stomping on it all night a gig? Btw, I love the sound and the look of the guitar.
That sounds Wild. What Amp is that pushing....,? A tube amp or a modeling amp? I play through a Blackstar id 60watt tvp head. Solid State. It's almost everything I need. But it just falls a little short of that line6 insane channel power

Hi max ! nice pedal ! this pedal remind me my Behringer vintage tube monster VT999 overdrive pedal , i have one with a 12ax7 tube (i change it to JJ tube ,original tube is a bugera ) . and it's a very monster overdrive , i have a great overdriven tube sound (crunch to high gain) and it's a affordable only 69 € (probably 77 $ with the change ) , if you have the chance to find it , try it ! it's a good pedal ! anyway thanks for your video ! take care and be safe ! big hello from france !!! :-)
@@n_money1019 hi ! the bugera tube sound not bad but less gain than jj tube , the sound is similar but with the jj tube the distortion is more punchy ,i prefer the jj tube
I've had the Blackstar HT Dist. It sounded a lot better than this thing. The tube was running at 300V (not sure about amperage). Those low voltage tube amp pedals all seem to have this fizzy transistor like distortion (which it is). The Blackstar had it a bit too, but WAY less.
This is actually really cool. I used to have a solid state fender amp that I really liked the clean tone but nothing else. Now I have a small tube amp and I like it better overall but it’s clean tone isn’t as good.
That solid state Fender amp, was it an Ultimate Chorus DSP, by any chance? I picked one up at the pawn shop and it is so loud I don't think I've turned it up past 1.
Not a fan of the LED backlight on the tube socket. Gives me the impression that the tube may be just for show in this rig. Maybe not, but I like to see the natural glow.
Without high power and voltage tubes don't actually clip / distort. So, it will be transistors op amps or diodes that are making the "distortion". The tube is a gimmick. Even with 15 volts in you just don't have enough amps to heat the tube fully. I am an engineer, a real engineer with a degree. There is no magic here, the tube may pass a signal but you won't get any significant gain from it. Sorry, it may look neat with a glowy blue led making the tube light up but that's all it is. A boost is a boost, you don't need a tube for that. Punching the input of a tube amp sends the first tube in preamp into saturation, that's why you get distortion from a boost. It can be pretty hard on an amp if you over do it. But, if you like the pedal, that's great. The tube is a gimmick but if it makes you happy, that's all that matters.
I have a couple of tube "pedals" (how did a wah wah replace a fuzz for terminology ? its a box) and they sound like this. Basically cool distortion and harmonics, but that crappy high end fuzz fizz is there too. They need to tame that thru impedance matching, especially thru a transformer would sound good........ The first of the tube boxes the good old Real Tube gives a good singing lead humbucker tone. That's it. My others sound like this, nice but too fizzy. I've been meaning to put them thru a interstage tube transformer, but life gets in the way.
Amps have a preamp section that shapes the tone and a power amp section that makes it louder. It would just skip the preamp and go direct to the power amp. the amps tone controls would not work, but the master volume would.
Umm.. 12 to 18V? You are not running the tube at full voltage. That pedal is doing the "starving voltage" type thing. Similar to the Rocktron Silver Dragon.
IV got an old “Real Tube” pedal that’s no where near as good as yours, I’ve even changed the tube out. I haven’t played with it in a while, I may revisit it, ac cord is hardwired into it. I’ve fallen into the digital analog (tubeless)stage of my life using lighter equipment. But again advancements in technology have come along way even when it comes to using tube based pedals and amps.
I like the idea,..but where tube amps inexpensively cost the same like ,monoprice..I think it should be cheaper...$250 for full on 15 watt amp with descent speaker ...190 ...its like buying a head version but missing a tube or 2?...sounds good but still can get the same great tones from analog an digital pedals that are a quarter of the price ...stomping on a pedal with a glass tube still seems rather no thought out to well ..If you jar your pedal or pedal board which can happen tripping on cables or bouncing around in a vehicle in transpo?,......I'll stick with basic analog or digital pedals...looks cool though ..
@@richardjones2811 Hey there Richard! I actually have a few amps here, unfortunately I don't have enough time to mic a cab or enough room to keep the amps and mics in a nice position all the time. It's quick to just use a plugin.
sounds very similar to my cheapo behringer fuzz pedal, just 24$ and its really amazing. just bought it for fun to test some doom metal don`t expecting a lot but this little thing nails nearly every rock and metal distortion better as some very expensive counterparts
Being kinda picky here but your G and low E string are a lil out of tune you should check you intonation maybe?.......otherwise great tone and playing as always
Nah it's not really a very good price considering one could get a Behringer Vintage Tube Monster for $90 that will blow this pedal away. Not too long ago they were only $50. Plus it has a built-in noise gate. Best pedal for the money ever....imo.
It's so weird that $200 is an "affordable pedal" now. It wasn't that long ago when that was the going rate for annoyingly high priced boutique pedals. Lol.
@@Axess-sv8nq I get paying out the ass for a limited run, hand wired pedal out of a tiny operation, but I'm generally with you on the $100 ish range. There are too many high quality options at much lower price points to play this game.
I knew it was a low voltage pedal 26 seconds in. You can't get a good sound from a tube running at low voltage. I've auditioned probably a dozen or more of them over the decades, and built more than a few. Low voltage is crap.
When are you gonna start demoing 80s and 90s preamps, effects units, etc..those rack days had the sweet tones..and you dont always have to pay in the thousands of dollars for shit
$200 is affordable for a pedal? I’m salty. $200 for a pedal that gets you tube tone, vs $1,000+ for a good tube amp, sure that’s affordable. $200 for a pedal that comes with a tube in it in general? Alright, that could be considered affordable. $200 for a pedal compared to other pedals on the market, not even close. I’d say this was affordable for someone looking to enter the boutique pedal market, or avoid buying a tube amp all together. As far as pedals go in general $200 being affordable is such a joke. Inflation got people’s expectations way fucked up.
After hearing the demo of the sound I’m pretty sure a MXR fullbore metal distortion can almost match this for half the price, and has a built in noise gate.
I don't know if ya'll are listening to it on a phone or something but on real speakers it sounds like a cranked Pig Nose. I'd take an MT-2 over that any day.
Depends on the voltage really, caster type pedals can give a similar sound, ones that run a proper voltage can be exact copies of what's in the preamp of tube/hybrid heads. I use mains tube preamps, and also pedals that have tubes, and they sound very similar, but yes, there's MANY gimmicky tube units out there, especially when they light up and display the valves themselves...
I keep posting some other brand pedals that are legit tube preamp pedals but he keeps taking them down.. OP its easier when builders get along with each other, why wouldn't you want the cross exposure..
I've never heard a guitar tone on this channel that didn't kick ass. Equipment barely seems to matter, this guy is so good.
well you have now..this sounds cheap...like a line 6 cheap..
I question, how this is done without noise reduction.
That's the best sounding tube pedal I've ever heard .

You could ask a 60s,70s guy if they agree but they won't hear you.
@@terryenglish7132 what?
All day.
Should be a GREAT way to coax those overdriven tube sounds outta your rig without driving the neighbors crazy with too much volume ;)
Sounds like my boss hyper metal
The concept seems to be similar to blackstar pedal
I wonder why I hear no hum?? Unsual for a pedal like this to function quietly, with no noise reduction.
Yes! I was very impressed with how quiet it was and I talked about that in the video.
I've been using plugins most of the time, but I miss the old amps a lot.
Get a valve amp then, Nothing like the freedom of an actual amp instead of sitting in front of a computer!
@@richardjones2811 Hey there Richard! I actually have a few amps here, unfortunately I don't have enough time to mic a cab or enough room to keep the amps and mics in a nice position all the time. It's quick to just use a plugin.
@@CrushingAxes That's because you're addicted to UA-cam and making videos.
You should play because you want to and not to make videos.
I'm sold were can I buy?
Nice
Wow
Sounds better than a. SD1
Id honestly rather go for a demonfx freedman or tonecity wild fro
Anyone else notice this sounds like someone rolled the tone nob down or a half cocked wah always sounds in? Not really a fan of the sound at all.
sounds very similar to my cheapo behringer fuzz pedal, just 24$ and its really amazing. just bought it for fun to test some doom metal don`t expecting a lot but this little thing nails nearly every rock and metal distortion better as some very expensive counterparts
199
I was hoping it was sub $100 😔
Being kinda picky here but your G and low E string are a lil out of tune you should check you intonation maybe?.......otherwise great tone and playing as always
Yeah, my G string is always messed up.
@@GuitarMAXMusic it's a Floyd Rose balance thing, I think? that's why I'm going to get a Tremel-no have you heard of it or reviewed it yet?
I think im more impressed by the guitar
First
Pressed like w/o even watching

Nah it's not really a very good price considering one could get a Behringer Vintage Tube Monster for $90 that will blow this pedal away. Not too long ago they were only $50. Plus it has a built-in noise gate. Best pedal for the money ever....imo.
It's so weird that $200 is an "affordable pedal" now. It wasn't that long ago when that was the going rate for annoyingly high priced boutique pedals. Lol.
People are getting conditioned to pay higher prices. The most I'd pay for a pedal would be $99. And even THAT is pushing it.
@@Axess-sv8nq I get paying out the ass for a limited run, hand wired pedal out of a tiny operation, but I'm generally with you on the $100 ish range. There are too many high quality options at much lower price points to play this game.
Great another run-of-the-mill distortion pedal.
EVH5150 EL34 no need for a pedal ;)
I knew it was a low voltage pedal 26 seconds in. You can't get a good sound from a tube running at low voltage. I've auditioned probably a dozen or more of them over the decades, and built more than a few. Low voltage is crap.
If you want to hear something funny, set the playback speed to 2.
Delay always makes a bad amp/pedal sound good.
15 volt supply... no wonder...yikes!
Fizzy as hell. Very unpleasant. No warmth. No thanks.
Love your channel but man, isnt "bootlegger" a horrible brand name 😂 or am i crazy? Probably both...
Too brittle and fizzy, not rounded and warm at all
Tube pedals are a gimmick but that does sound cool
Why you say so?
Yeah, why ? Tube pedals sound like tubes. SS pedals that sound like tubes; now that's a gimmick.
What a Gawd-awful fizz machine! Couldn't give me one for free...
lol same here.
it goes from crackle to pop to fizz all sounding equally awful, but thanks for showing us the product
