PATTANI, THAILAND (ปัตตานี) - Welcome to Pattani, very far south of Thailand! I was thrilled to have a chance to visit and I immediately loved the people and the incredible food. In this video, we’re taking you on a Thai Malay street food tour of Pattani to eat 5 of the most incredible and iconic dishes that you have to eat when you’re in Pattani. #Pattani #Thailand #streetfood
Here’s all the information for this Pattani street food tour:
1. Roti (โรตี) at Roti Wema (ร้านแวมะโรตี) - 95 thb total
goo.gl/maps/Cw... - This is one of the best local places to eat roti in Pattani, and for a very good reason. Their recipe is down to a science, perfectly crispy on the edges and gooey in the center. I loved the egg roti the best, with a next of an egg in the center.
2. Khao yam / nasi kerabu (ข้าวยำ) at local breakfast market - 20 THB - You’ll find khao yam (ข้าวยำ), or nasi kerabu in Malay, around southern Thailand. But the original taste and for me the best, is in Pattani. The budu (fermented anchovy sauce) is outstanding, and paired with the rice and herbal salad blend, it is quite honestly sensational. Yaseen took me to a local breakfast market to eat one of the best packets of khao yam in Pattani City, and it was exquisite.
3. Nasi dah-gae (นาซิดาแฆ) / nasi dagang (นาซิดาแฆ ร้านอาหาร) - goo.gl/maps/2Z... - 20 or 30 THB - Another Malay dish I can’t get enough of is nasi dah-gae (นาซิดาแฆ) as it’s called in Pattani Malay, or nasi dagang in Malaysia. It’s a combination of fenugreek rice, fish curry, egg, and some other toppings and ingredients, and I love it. This corner shop makes what is the gold standard of nasi dagang in Pattani and it’s a perfect breakfast. Something you have to eat when you’re in Pattani.
4. Gai galae / Ayam golek (ไก่กอและ) at (ร้านไกฆอและ-กะเมาะ) - 270 THB for everything - goo.gl/maps/g5... - Next up is another favorite of mine, known as gai galae (ไก่กอและ) or ayam golek - a stylee of grilled chicken in a coconut milk bbq sauce. The sauce is so rich and thick that it’s almost unbelievable, and they make the real deal here - adding four coats of sauce while grilling so all the coconut milk caramelizes onto the chicken. It’s lifechaning.
5. Sate (สะเต๊ะ) and rojak at ร้านสะเต็ะศรีเมือง (goo.gl/maps/to...) - 30 thb per plate- Finally to complete this Thai Malay street food tour in Pattani, the last dish you have to eat is Sate (สะเต๊ะ), likely Indonesian influenced, grilled over charcoal, and smothered in peanut sauce.
And that completes this Pattani street food tour, hope you enjoyed it and don’t miss any of these amazing street food dishes when you’re in Pattani!

Pattani was center of Malay culture after the fall of Malacca Sultanate. Nasi Kerabu was made during the war between Pattani and Thai (then Siam) in 1600s, when Malay Pattani warriors lack of food supply they mixed rice with fried shredded coconut, budu and herbs from jungle.

@@MarkWiens Thanks Mark
You deserve the heaven you live and the better is waiting for you here after.
Mark, you should write a book and name it "Mark's street food guide book" filled with information for people who want to follow the taste of those dishes. 😋
People amazed how Pattani sound similar like Malay Kelantanese dialect(East Coast Malaysia).
Kelantan was part of Patani back then, before the Thai Thonburi Dynasty invaded and divided them into 4 province which included Patani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla. and Kelantan come after.
In fact, the whole Southern Thai was part of Malay Cape. if you go to Kor-kod-kra
in Kra Isthmus, Ranong Distrct. there's a monument clearly state 'Kor kod kra is the narrowest part on the Malay Cape.."
Hat Yai, Satun, Krabi until Phuket(up to Tenesserim, South Myanmar) was part of Kedah(state in Northern Malaysia) in 1300s - 1800s. Phuket was a hot spot province to seize between Burma and Thais.
There a several reasons why Kedah lose the war because the British helped Siam to invaded Kedah(refer Sherard Osborne: Kedah Blockade 1821).
in fact , the main reason of Siam invasion/Ambush of Kedah in 12 November 1821 is because they want to confiscated Phuket!

OMG I love watching you loving the food. Patani is the world most underrated food heaven. They speak both Malaysian (Kelantanese) and Thai languages. YOU ARE SO BLESSED !!!
Cakap melayu bukan malaysian. Pastu dialek ada perbezaan antara pattani dgn kelatan, orang belah sana je yg boleh tahu.

I went there in August 2017.. Pattani is very unique city with tasty, mouthwatering food! It's in the southern Thailand but I can communicate and understand what they speak as Indonesian!
It's Bahasa melayu pattani
I love how gently the lady places those chicken sticks on the grill. Seems like such a tender soul
yep
I'd like to film that as well :)
Rockstar Eater jesus what’s your deal man?
Mark's appetite for chilies never ceases to amaze me
He eats chili’s with food.
all the five dishes in this video make me feel like home in Malaysia! the roti dishes remind me on all the rotis sold at the Tamil Muslim (Mamak) restaurants alongside the rojak or pasembur in northern Malaysia. this time, it is the khanom jenn version of the rojak pasembur! both nasi dagang and kerabu really remind us on both Terengganu and Kelantan on the eastern coast of peninsular malaysia respectively! it's just that the rice for nasi kerabu is not dyed in the blue butterfly pea flowers as in Kelantan. this is my first time seeing the extended version of the ayam percik ranging from chicken feet to cockles and fishes! last but not least, the compressed rice cake cut in dices is called lontong or nasi impit in Malay.
Thanks so much Yong, glad it brings back memories!
@Cherry Candy spices like red onions, garlic, lemongrass, ginger, chilies, sugar and salt.
My mother loves you so much Mark!! And all your videos. Since the first time I've watched your videos because of her, I was already addicted to watching them. My husband also mimics your impressions especially when you really like the food and that became his habit to make me laugh every time we had our meal he always say "OH WOW". And take note, he also started eating red chili's. And that's how you affect our daily lives Mark!! It makes me wanna travel around the world coz me and my family also loves to eat. You are awesome.Take care always. You and your family..
South Thailand Pattani is so different with heavy Malay influence. If it wasn’t for the Thai and salad with fish sauce at the Satay stall, i would think one was in Malaysia. The coconut chicken looks amazing. Just wondering why no one franchised that.
But they're quite similar like East coast Malay peninsula especially Kelantan
Mark: She is a master of roti
The guy actually making the roti: guess I don't exist
:"))
I'll make that guy famous! :)
so true
Mamak kt Malaysia jeling semacam je
Man..that ROTI has got to be the BEST FOOD ever reviewed on the internet. 3:40 Mark's face says it all.
Just like my face :)
ikr lol
Pattani cultural is similar like east coast of Malaysia...they speak the same kelantanese dialect
Yes it's the same dialect and food culture.
It's their own countru in the past. It's much like mindanao and aceh, they want autonomy.
NO... Kelantanese copy Pattani culture and language
@@Jaguar10My not copy from each other but the reality is they are same people but different country after 1901. You must read history about kelantan and pattani before you say that.

Hi
That’s my favourite kind of egg roti canai. In Malaysia we call it roti tampal (plastered), the egg is ‘plastered’ onto the roti.
Great to hear that, plastered is a perfect name.
In India we call it paratha
Yes. With egg, it's called Egg Paratha

Wow.. I can notice the Malay / Arabic admixture in the Pattani people's faces
east coast of Peninsula malaya (eg th Patani Sultanate) was th main centre of islsmic learning ever since its buddhist leaders converted in the 14th century- th first on th peninsula.
after th takeover of malacca by the portuguese, this role was unchallenged n even more prominent. this only ended in the late 19th century when siam started its process of taking over Patani. nevertheless, it remains th main centre of islamic learning 'within' Thailand today.
this included religious leaders, travelling to mecca , n Yemen, for education n research. this was accompanied by trade also.
of course, this meant also cultural n familial mixing too over the centuries.
@@AbdulKareemAbdulRahman As a local people this really amazing information.

I love how someone shoved a toilet paper roll next too him soon as he took his first bite if the chicken lol
Lol pretty funny but...if it was 6cms longer it would be a paper towel? 🤣🤣
Had to thumbs up this video. I really liked the vibes that dude with Mark was giving out!!! He was awesome 😎
Love how you pronounce “Pataniiii” & “Rrrotiii”
Mark rolls his “r’s” a lot. Must have been all that yummy Mexican food in university! 😆
When Mark Wiens starts enjoying food, he goes in slow motion and closes his eyes and the common word you'll hear, "ummm WOW!"😛
He probably practices extreme intermittent fasting to the point where he gets really hungry and then goes out on an eating spree.
@@rayva1 True that.
Thai cuisine truly is rich. So many influences from around the region. Me myself am an Indonesian, so my preferences are a bit biased. But if i had to make a list of favorite cuisines, 4 of my top 5 literally from south east asia. South east asia foods hands down the best in the world.
Melayu Nusantara. Nothing different with our local food in Malaysia. From Sate to Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Dagang (Dage), Ayam Percik (Ayam Golek) and Roti Canai.
Similar... not nothing different. Sorry nothing different sounds a bit harsh.
The moment they realised its you, more🌶️for you💪😂
really surprising see the big size of rice cake in the last stall, as an indonesian and javanese it was a common things use the rice cake like that but in small size and we called it “lontong” ... hope someday i could go there , really nice video Mark
