Tesla Model 3 Working Without Parking Sensors! Is it using Vision?

  • Last night I was moving my Model 3 out of the garage without the front bumper on and noticed the car was detecting accurately another car and warning me on the screen. I tested it all day today and think that the vision system and the ultrasonic sensors are working together OR the vision system is active to collect data for Tesla.

    The removal of the parking sensors is the main discussion topic in the German Tesla forum. So I guess you might get quite some traffic here ;-)

      @@TheMelbournelad The USS are simply not mounted in Europe since some months (reason unclear: cost reduction? Supply issues?) Tesla promised a camera based software solution, but it is not here yet and many doubt the performance of this upcoming solution.

    Really interesting, thanks for posting it. Probably they were training AI Tesla Vision on cars with USS for long time in some king hybrid mode. Can't wait to see how it will work when they finally activate it on cars without USS.

    I think I can explain this:
    When the front USS are not connected, the vehicle still has the rear USS available. When reversing, the odometry is used to estimate the vehicle's position. The fact that this works very well is confirmed by the fact that an approach in the area of the front car is also visualised exactly (around 1:31) after the vehicle has arrived at approximately the height of the original measurement of the rear USS (around 1:01)
    To sum up, no, this does not prove that Tesla Vision is already working.

    • @henrikmikaelkristensen4784
      @henrikmikaelkristensen4784 Рік тому +1

      Basing inch accurate position on odometer is not reliable at all. Too many variables. I would be surprised if Tesla made any inference on another car's position based on odometry.

    If you ask me, this isn't camera based parking detection. It's merely an extrapolation of front collision based on objects detection with the rear sensors.
    Like in my Mercedes if it detects an object with the rear sensors and I go backwards it extrapolates it for the front based on the turn of the steering wheel... And I'm sure of this as it happens even if the object detected disappears (like a car next to you moving but still being signalled)

    Cool. Next step would be compensating the lack of rain sensors. I don't know how it is now, but my late 2019 M3 is really not very capable of detecting rain properly. It's been 4 years almost, I wish Tesla could offer a hardware solution while they work on this.

    Wondering if the radar is what's doing the measurements considering that's its a 2018 model 3. If we also see an example of this on a car without radar then we'll know for sure that it's the cameras doing it..

    • @GodzUnit01
      @GodzUnit01 Рік тому

      The car only has one radar unit mounted on the passenger side behind the front bumper. If you pause at 0:21 you’ll see a little box with a bunch of small font text on it above the foam about 10 inches left of center. That’s the only radar unit. You’re saying that might be what’s measuring the distance of the space between the Tesla and the car parked on its left?

    • @WinstonsGarage
      @WinstonsGarage  Рік тому +11

      Yes, during my testing the radar module was plugged in, however, off camera I removed the radar module and got the same results. Then I covered the cameras up and the parking sensors were not working.

  • @ChipMIK

    Now had they just kept the radar & used vision as something secondary, boy could we still have a useable reliable selfdriving car instead of the POC toycar they transferred it into after the "Vision-virus" got injected into my poor TM3.

  • @doggkruse

    Does it still detect in the front if the back sensor doesn't detect it first? Might just be remembering what the rear sensor saw and adjusting for change in position

    • @sohmal3
      @sohmal3 Рік тому +2

      That's my guess too, it never detects garage and only detects/remembers what rear sensors see.

  • @stephen2220

    Is that because the car is still using the USS feature and not Tesla Vision? It still seems to recognize the USS harness that is plugged into the main computer. I haven't seen any 2023 Tesla vehicles without USS be able to show distance from an object on the main screen.

    • @stephen2220
      @stephen2220 Рік тому +1

      @@mattaut88 Correct! If the computer was programmed to recognize the USS even though the sensors themselves have been disconnected the computer still looks for the sensors as opposed to a computer programmed without needing to monitor the USS feature.

    I know there is a "blind spot" that the cameras won't be able to pick up (For very close objects) so I'm wondering if the front is not detecting anything because it will be relying on the new radar.

    Amazing! You that is! So, 2022Y LR. I had a fender bender the other day. My fault; my front their back. A slight crease in my front number plate (I'm in the UK) but nothing else, not a mark. However, the front sensors are not functioning. Nothing pushed in, all very clean. I surmise that the shock of the impact has detached a connection or broken something behind the sensors that controls them.
    As you have yours stripped down, could you give me a clue as to what the problem might be. Tesla Service will take a while, and possibly, be quite costly. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

    • @WinstonsGarage
      @WinstonsGarage  Рік тому

      Hmm yeah. So there is one main connector that controls the USS, the fog lights, and the outside temp sensor. During the making of the video, I kept getting the "Park assist unavailable" alert. What could be happening is one of the parking sensors is broken causing the entire system to go down.

  • @bibibobibo
    @bibibobibo Рік тому

    This is interesting. Tesla is trying hard to make it on par with the vision approach and they can compare with the USS reported value to train its neural network to properly estimate distance. The only reason why it's not released yet is it's not accurate or not getting reported. USS is a pretty dumb and reliable system.

    It may work as long as the cameras are clean.
    So what will you do if you have a smuged up back up camera after driving through bad conditions ?
    Is itTeslas High-Tech solution to having to get out of the car before backing up to clean the camera ?
    Well if you use your logic, that's how it going to be if you want to avoid dented bumpers or unwanted parking collisions with others !
    The parking accidents are piling up as we speak with Teslas they removed the parking sensors of !
    So if they have a sufficient solution replacing the sensors,which I highly doubt, good and fair but shouldn't they have waited until they completed it before removing the sensors ?
    The reason because they didn't do that is because they removed the sensors first to save money and then thought about a solution !
