I did two combat deployments (one with the invasion of Iraq) as an Infantryman. I came out of it with so much anger and hatred. I was devolving into a person I couldn't recognize or respect. I almost lost my wife and children. Finally I stopped blaming everyone and everything and pointed my fucking finger at myself. It was a painful realization, but now I feel I'm a person who I can respect. What's more is I feel I'm a person others can respect. So glad you pulled out of the dark corner.

I am a retired US Navy Commander and familiar (somewhat after all these years) with naval/military discipline & the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Now that you are 4 years into your French Foreign Legion contract, perhaps you are considering a career in the FFL? If so and if you renew your 5 years contract (re-enlist), you might have a decent career on your hands if the rigorous life suits you. As an enlisted legionnaire you could set your sights ultimately on warrant officer. A warrant officer has a pretty good life, lots of responsibility, and a chance to excel on the job. Also a decent retirement (17 years minimum?), and if you so choose, French citizenship (in addition to or in place of U.S. citizenship). Good luck. I wish you fair winds and following seas.

TC, Totally commend your openness and honesty to share and maybe help someone navigate through the pitfalls that have made you a better person and Operator. My fav Battle Buddy story is the guy stuck in a hole, religious person comes by see him says a prayer and leaves - (and I am NOT diggin on Religious people, I am one, it's just part of the story). Next person does the similar, will call someone, can't help, too busy or whatever. Next (3rd) person comes by, sees the guy and jumps in the hole. Guy stuck says what are you doing, now we're both stuck. 3rd guys says, Nah, I got this, been here before, this is the way out. YOU Are that 3rd person, not as a counselor of sorts and coach someone but to BE an EXAMPLE and own up to whatever is ailing your life, GTFO and move-on. Huge Props to you and again, God's speed wherever you go in the FFL and beyond. ----Side note, I think someone sized you up totally wrong and messed with you on those 2 life changing occasions to get to you. In reality, you're a giant of a person and will be too busy and smart to let that happen ever again.

I joined the US Navy in '76 to be a Seabee.
I made it three week into basic. I started getting sick every morning. Puking on my hands and knees sick.
Missing classes and drills. I didn't know what was going on.
    They thought I was malignering.
I went from 150 lbs to 120 lbs in two weeks !
A master chief pushed a paper to me on a desk and said sign this.
I was given an honorable discharge but was ineligible to join any branch of the service.
I came home totally defeated, ashamed and confused.
Years later doctors would find five ulcer scars in my stomach.
I looked into the Legion, but realized I wasn't up to it physically or mentally.
Every man in my family served in the military and not a day goes by in the last fifty years that I don't regret making them put my ass in a hospital and return to training when recovered.

I'm sorry what you had to go through. I too have a temper. If I was there as you're friend, in you're first case you that you caught, I would of given you this option to consider..
By presenting a compromise of Good will as a gesture of an apology by offering to the accusing witness by having your attorney who I believe should have been a Navy Lawyer.
Rarher then of handing over your Military pay, You could of asked the prosecution that you would resign your Enlistment as a condition of an Honorable discharge with Stipulation, that you will not re - enlist ever again provided that the Prosecution convinces the wittness to drop the Assualt criminal charges.
That would of kept you out of prison wasting your life inside.
With a clean start you could proceed you're new career with Private Contractors like for example Black Water. Covert Operstions.
Well, I wish you the very best. Please Brother, try to keep your kool when provoked by Assholes. There everywhere.

Ah, UA-cam... Watched Nikko Ortiz react to a video on the FFL and noted the young American about a minute into that video. Saw a comment about a podcast he was on with Mike Ritland, whom I'd never heard of. Quick search led me here. Subscribed to both this and Ritland's channels.
I love the handful of comments trying to bring this SEAL turned Legionnaire down. I'm a retired Army Infantry NCO who never went above and beyond the basics. But I've had to turn away people who were unqualified to serve due to mistakes during my recruiting time, had to expedite the separation of would-be Soldiers who let personal issues consume them during my Drill Sergeant time, and watched too many Soldiers kicked to the curb due to substance abuse and/or legal issues. Making the Teams is quite an accomplishment. Climbing near the top only to fall on your face near the bottom is something that many Service Members don't recover from. I've known too many who chose an easy path out. The proclaimed "failure" in this video not only made it through BUD/S and SQT, earning the Trident, but faced his internal demons and started a fresh life in the Legion. That's something that probably, let's say, .0001% of viewers can lay claim to.
In the early '90s, my brother received an OTH discharge after a pattern of misconduct. I was a wannabe without so much as a GED who was heading down the wrong path and he had me convinced we should contact the Foreign Legion to try to enlist. Knowing what I know now, he wouldn't have made it through, and I doubt they'd have wanted my 18-year-old self. He and my only surviving childhood friend are now both homeless meth addicts and in and out of jail/prison regularly.
Thanks for the story, and I wish you nothing but the best.

Fellas… something I want to share with you as a woman a girlfriend a wife a mother a sister and aunt of military men. Please do not hook up with women who don’t 100% support you and your time away. You will know here when she kisses you on your way out and says I love you see you when you get home, and not the one who says please don’t go why do you have to go but I need you here, the kids need you< she is not the right gal for you. Example the sniper who came home and was killed by one of his own with ptsd state side. His wife I feel deserves the blame. She knew who she married she should’ve fully supported her Soldier Husband, she sowed the seeds of doubt in his mind and he let his guard down. That’s what killed him!
