    Prerequisites
    Introduction to Networking
    Purpose of Class
This class teaches students the basic concepts for network DNS (Domain Name Services).
    Class Notes
DNS is the Server Service that Maps Hostnames/ Domain Names to IP Addresses
DNS and DHCP are different services that are generally hosted on the same server, but can be hosted on separate servers
Dynamic DNS allows DHCP to automatically add Name and IP Address mapping to DNS tables.
Most techs will work with DNS built into Small Business/ Home Routers or ISP Modems. Other variations of DNS are provided by Windows Servers or BIND which is used on Unix and Linux servers.
A DNS implementation may be very simple or very complex. BIND and Windows DNS can have many configurations and options while DNS built into a Linksys Router will only have an On/ Off toggle.
DNS Servers can be configured to query other DNS Servers if they cannot find a result in their tables.
Reverse DNS maps IP Addresses to Hostnames/ Doman Names. This is done for security to verify a connection has not been redirected by hackers.

      @jacobcrow748 7 років тому +1

      Host Names
Domain Name Service (DNS) is the service used to convert human readable names of hosts to IP addresses. Host names are not case sensitive and can contain alphabetic or numeric letters or the hyphen. Avoid the underscore. A fully qualified domain name (FQDN) consists of the host name plus domain name.
      Domain Name System
The Domain Name System (DNS) is basically a large database which resides on various computers and it contains the names and IP addresses of various hosts on the internet and various domains. The Domain Name System is used to provide information to the Domain Name Service to use when queries are made. The service is the act of querying the database, and the system is the data structure and data itself. The Domain Name System is similar to a file system in Unix or DOS starting with a root. Branches attach to the root to create a huge set of paths. Each branch in the DNS is called a label. Each label can be 63 characters long, but most are less. Each text word between the dots can be 63 characters in length, with the total domain name (all the labels) limited to 255 bytes in overall length. The domain name system database is divided into sections called zones. The name servers in their respective zones are responsible for answering queries for their zones. A zone is a subtree of DNS and is administered separately. There are multiple name servers for a zone. There is usually one primary nameserver and one or more secondary name servers. A name server may be authoritative for more than one zone.

On Windows, type the Windows key + r, then type cmd, then type ipconfig /all, you will see your dns suffix which comes from your ISP, if its a cable provider like Comcast for example you will also be able to check your DNS IP addresses, cuz usually it is more than just one...

Yes, I get it. Only configured DNS server can aswer a request, but if this DNS hasn't the IP requested in it's cache, so it will request to some root server that (depending on the TLD or ccTLD) will request to a "registrar" responsible for domains registration, so the registrar will point to the server that owns the registered domain.

So Eli, lets say we have a DHCP pool of 30 addresses and 30 host-names and Dynamic DNS was not configured, when it comes time to configure them are those manual entries on the DNS table or is there a pool of column a (DHCP IP addresses and Column B host names and they just get paired or dynamically assigned for a specific lease time?
    Thanks,

Hello Jamie. I think your problem is related to Domain name resolution. First thing you need to do is find the local IP address of the Web server. If you can't access the web server, it is not dns related. If you can access the web server using this IP address, then you need to setup an internal DNS server to translate the the domain name (website) into the LAN IP address of your web server.to be used by computer on your local network. Add a record for the website and point it to the web server.

thank you ELI for all your work and effort you put into these videos.
if i had a job currently i would make the largest donation that i could possibly make.
i am a recent network security admin graduate.
and i know....NOTHING... i graduated near the top of my class and i remember just the names of these services. not what they do or how to use them.
and it really sucks, because i get job interviews and i look like a complete fool not knowing how to use these services avidly.
if any one is willing to take me on a "student" i would be for ever in your debt.

How about a class for the non-nerd, non-techs business entrepreneurs who buy a Domain name for their company from one company (GoDaddy?), buying "hosting" for their website through another Hosting company (AWS), and, hosting their "Email" service through another hosting service (BlueHost)
The email hosting company tells you to go to GoDaddy to setup "A" records (????) to point to their IP Address and MX Records (????) to point to their mail (????). And when you go to GoDaddy and access your "Zone" (???) file you see cryptic stuff like A records, MX records, TXT recorts, PTR records etc. with @, mail, and other cryptic things under "type", and you have no idea what those things are!!!!!
Can you simplify this for us non techies with a simple or basic class going through those records and telling us what each record, record type (mail, @ etc.), priority, etc. mean so we can at least communicate with the tech people a little more intelligently?
    Thanks!!

In Windows server 2008 r2. If we add a DNS role to make it a DNS server what exactly does it do to make it a DNS server? Do DNS servers maintain a database of computers', applications' DNS name and their corresponding IP? If yes, do all the DNS servers in the world have databases which contain the same data?
