Leica Elmarit-TL 18mm f2.8 review - the smallest autofocus Leica lens I know of. Made for the APS-C crop sensor Leica CL / Leica TL type cameras. Leica L mount so will also fit the Leica SL and SL2 for example plus all other L mount cameras. This Leica 18mm lens equates to around 27mm in full frame terms so this lens might suit anyone that likes Leica 28mm lenses. Leica Elmarit 18mm review, photos and lens specs overview

hey matt can i use this lens on lumix s5?? compatible yes??
@@bongpeninoy6313 yes but 50% crop in pixels (APS-C lens)
Finally someone who can actually shoot !! This is great work Matt. Thanks for sharing
Ha thanks Cris! Yes i'm a photographer trying to do UA-cam :)
I hesitated buying this kit lens because of the critics around the “low” f number. After a couple of month in use, it has become my favorite lens. Both the image quality and the angle of view fits my needs. The small size is only a bonus.
Thanks Yoram, yes agreed, kit lenses are not supposed to be this good! :)
I introduced friend of mine to CL last year. We got 18-58, 11-23, 60 then 18 and i also got the 55-135. the 18 is most enjoyable to use most of the time for the discrete and lightness. He got the SL2 for his work but for personal use picture quality is indistinguishable. Amazing results from the CL. And since we are both in 74 yr bracket light kit is king. We chose CL over Q2 because of weight and flexibility of lenses, of course it cost us more but no regrets. I wish Leica came back to CL format. :) I watched many many many of your videos thank you for your insights, fantastic. Also watched Peter Karbe's explanations of what went into lens design and color science. We started with D-lux 109 years back i got better results from it then i did from my Olympus E1, E3, E5. Leica files had better latitude at both ends. That made me a believer :) I coud see of getting the 8 as well. Photography is such an enjoyable hobby.
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Matt, I used this lens to shoot the Milky Way from a boat during a Galápagos trip. I could only do a 2 second exposure while the ship paused in its rocking one direction before rocking back in the other direction. Although the result looked like Jackson Pollock mimicking Eduard Munch, I am convinced that under proper conditions it could take a decent Milky Way image.
Wow interesting stuff. It’s an awesome lens for sure! Very sharp.
great and helpful review! Here I am in 2024 and just ordered this combo. I shoot mostly M11M, Q3 and SL2-S but this little combo and at the price I paid was too good to pass up. Great pictures as examples..
Thanks and congrats! Good on you for picking up this great combo!
Matt, I followed you journey on the CL. Use it with my M mount cameras for the similar size, digital format and pair the 18mm AF lens with the 21mm Color Skopar. But TBH, I love the pocketability of this CL when keeping it simple.
Thanks, yes I still use my CL, now with compact M lenses but I love it for travel
Leica CL & Leica Elmarit-TL 18mm F2.8 is an amazing combination! I am loving it on my CL!
Agreed! A lovely compact setup :)
I got a Leica T, as backup to my M. This 18mm is an amazing lens. Super compact. Wish I had the silver since it matches my camera. I also have a Sigma 30mm f1.4. Amazing lens for price. Nice combo with 18mm.
Thanks! Yes a few other CL users mentioned the Sigma too! 👍🏻
I love this lens on my CL specially when i go out shooting street photos and i want something ligth and small... good video Matt thx
Thanks Jerome!
I use this one too. Like you said, the close focus range makes it very versatile for a 28mm. I never really liked 28mm lenses on M cameras, but I like this one a lot! And the optical quality is quite stunning for such a tiny lens.
Thanks yes agreed!
What a nice guy! Very helpful video for me. Thank you.
Thank you Ben!
I had it on my TL2 and it’s an even smaller set up!!! I just sold it last week as I got a Q which is a 28mm full frame f/1.7 with even closer minimum focus distance. But overall I can recommand this tiny 18mm for any Leica APSC shooter
Thanks and congrats on your Q! I forgot to mention those in the video sorry
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom no problem Matt. Your video is great and this 18mm deserves a video by its own. I think I will make one, too as I was really happy with this little light piece of glass.
@@DidierMOULINPhotography thanks yes great lens! 👌🏻

I use the 18mm and the 23mm. TheY are both very good and pleasant to use. The 23mm is a little better (10 / 10), But the sigma 30mm f1.4 is also a fine lens. (This is a fraction of the price of a Leica 35mm). The 55-135mm works fine as well. I got both the leica t and the cl. Both very (very) nice. The only downside is the lack of a flipscreen. For the T I have an adjustable viewer. But there’s more to choose from: Leica M8 fuji pro2 with m-adapter and fuji gfx 50r amd fuji xh1. The fun thing is that these different cameras and lenses lead tot different views/frames and fotos ! even when i ride the same route with my bike (electric, try one, you can carry youre cl with 18mm whisling :)
Thank you! Nice cameras. I probably have enough bikes but no electric yet! :) Yes CL is great for rides.
Nice review and I'm impressed by your portrait work. Never thought that 28 mm could be used for this. Btw imho the CL is Leica best camera
Thanks Steve!
i love this lens.
I love the size :)
I have the Leica 23mm f2 already for my TL2, does it make sense to get the 18mm or it’s too close to make much difference?
Hi, 18mm = 28mm vs 35mm with your current lens. 18mm is the smallest lightest setup option so if you can cope with 28mm you might sell your current lens to have a smaller setup. Yes I don't think you need both.
I have both. From an image quality I love the 23mm rendition. I keep my 18mm if I need something ‘pocketable’ and just doing general purpose snapshots (dinner out with friends).
I believe I read that Leica does not provide or make a lens shade for the 18mm. If true, can y'all suggest a good alternative?
Not needed
We need a Comparison with a Leica Q
Thanks sorry I should of mentioned the Q. I have done Q and Q2 videos. See those for more.
Matt, This lens looks very similar in size and appearance to the 14mm f2.8 Panasonic micro-four thirds lens. Any relationship?
Hi Richard, great observation- I used to use the Panasonic in my G1 days! To my knowledge not related but I can’t confirm. Similar size yes.
Is there any relationship between the diameter of the glass and the quality of the lens? If you prefer shooting with your phone, you could say that the TL 18mm f2.8 is not much larger than a phone les.
Good point Kim, well in using a good phone camera instead for 28mm. Phones don’t have the dynamic range of real cameras but they do give a compact 28mm setup. I probably should have mentioned phones bing 28mm too, thanks 👍🏻
Would this lens autofocus on the new Panasonic S9?
Yes any L mount. See my S9 video, it’s an exciting step forward I think
Can you review 11-23mm? It's hard to have a wide angle lens at this range for Leo a apsc camera other than their own and only 11-23mm
If I get the opportunity I will yes.. I did another video on CL lenses but I think they were all primes.
Hi Matt: Quick question based on this video. I love the L System- I have CL and T- My Summicron f2 (collapsible), actually fits on the CL when it's in the adapter in a collapsed state. I would think it's the adapter that gives it the extra room. I will try my 3.5 Elmar as soon as possible. I am not sure if the Elmar has somewhat extra length when collapsed which might prevent this. Could you comment??
Hi Victor, if I understand correctly yes you cannot fully collapse the Elmar on the CL so I put a band around the lens to stop it hitting the inside of the camera. Still a very small setup. See the Elmar videos for more info.
Hi Matt. Need some advice. I'm looking at the CL as a lightweight travel camera with two lenses - a 50mm equivalent possibly the Voightlander Ultron 35mm f2 M mount and.a 28mm equivalent. The 18mm Elmarit seems like a good option for the 28mm equivalent but then I'm fiddling with removing the L to M adapter every time I switch between these two lenses. So I thought I could go with an alternative M mount 18mm and just leave the adapter permanently attached to the body. Am I being too fussy or is there a suitable 18mm M mount that would work for me me. I would keep this then as purely a travel or pocket setup.
Hi David, look at the 21/4 Skopar.. that's what I recommend when I do Zoom calls with CL users.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt for the suggestion. Sorry to be so cheeky to ask for free advice. I do plan to sign up as a Patreon subscriber very soon.
@@davegball thanks David, no problem 👍🏻
Can you focus on watches with this lens?
Not the best for watch macro shots, will go to 30mm approx distance
Would you ever consider the TL 18-35 or 18-56mm or are they just micky mouse kit lenses?
Hi David, I have contacts that like some of the TL zooms but normally the non-kit zooms are the favs. I think these still take clean shots.
I love this lens! On my TL2 it can be taken anywhere easily fitting in a pocket.
Yes I love the small setup it gives!
Do the tl lenses have aputure rings? Is it focus by wire? With the CL2 being up for pre order this april, and it being weather sealed are any of the tl lenses weather sealed?
Sadly no aperture ring and I’m
Not sure about weather sealing. I would expect no as the cameras it was designed for are not weather sealed.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks for the reply, do you know if he focus rings are true manual focus or focus by wire?
@@Mushu8495 focus by wire I think like most modern lenses. No infinity stop etc.
why not mention Leica Q as an option?
Thanks Kim, sorry it was an oversight. I’ve done Q and Q2 videos do should have mentioned those too. The Q weights 640g vs 660g of the M10 so more or less the same, and size also. The CL setup is a lot lighter.
Wish they would make something similar on mft
See my recent ‘spot the fake’ video - 15mm 1.7
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom the 15mm is good but I want another 14mm or an 12,5mm(MFT needs an 25mm equivalent (just because I like an trio that "doubles" itself like 12,5+25+50mm trio))
@@gusatvoschiavon I use Samyang 12 f2. Big but good
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom really nice lens, Samyang should make more MFT lenses, i love the "new" line of autofocus lenses that they realease for e-mount, i don't care much for the autofocus be the size alone for me makes me want to have an Sony camera just to use it(but that will have to wait since I'm broke)
@@gusatvoschiavon yes I like Samyang. I used to use them for Nikon F
Hi, has anyone used this lense for video? whatwas the experience like shooting video with this lens? (i need a wide angle thats easy to carry and not heavy haha)
Super small but I’ve not tried video. aF was near instant for photos FYI
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom ok I see.. do you know if anyone has tried this with the lumix s1/s5/s5mkii for photo video? As i understand it was designed for a apsc sized sensor, so how would it be on a full frame then
@@deekaythewhitewashedindian yes it will trigger crop mode on FF cameras
Hey Matt quick question, what do you record your videos with?
