We love the gentle leader for our girl because she responds so well to it. Flat collar was a struggle because it made her feel a little panicky tugging on her neck I think. Gentle leader is no pressure and she responds to the slightest direction from me when using it. Found this after she was five years old and so glad we did. Right tool for the job is so true.

As always good info presented in an enjoyable manner. My predominantly beagle wasn’t having the gentle leader. She about turned herself inside out trying to get it off each time I tried it. I eventually found a harness that works well. I found your discussion about the park and teaching her to value you very interesting. Be well and congratulations on your expanding family.

I love my alaskan shepherd.. he's such an awesome pretty boy. People say he's so beautiful.. (and he is.) He's so sweet. But.. they are high maintenance. Love to walk walk walk. Gotta brush him a lot. If the wrong person tries to pet my baby.. he's so protective, they would be scratching their head with their elbow. He knows who the bad guys.. and good guys are.

Thanks for the advice. I kind of already accidentally over-socialized my puppy who is 11 weeks

Awesome content as always! Loved that you included a Tom Davis clip!! He's my favorite dog trainer and he definitely does a great job explaining the e-collar and prong collar. 😀
Saying no to people is huge too! I've been noticing the best dog/horse owners/trainers I know also have solid personal boundaries, they know how to say no to people, and not feel guilty, or worry about what people think of them for protecting their own possessions/space/time/anything.
Also so excited for you guys having a baby!! You're both going to be awesome parents! 😀

I started using the vibrate and beep sound mode with our e-collar last year. She still gets positive training with treats at times. I tried only head halti but sometimes she won't listen straight away, I use the vibrate. Vibrate is enough but I rarely use it because I mainly use voice commands with her. I use the beep sound for long distance come, and it works well. I look forward to getting Tom D.'s version of Dogtra 280c in the end of the month. I also use a silent whistle or just my whistle for the recall when I don't place the e-collar on.

I get what your saying but you also know that shepherds pick one person. It may not be you in a large household. But if you got her and you feed her you are now her human. She will not let you out of her sight. She is also wired to please and work. Keep her busy and make her use her mind and she will be great dog and companion. I miss my German shepherd terribly.

Hey buddy !! Congratulations for the good news for the upcoming member of your amazing family!!
I strongly agree with your points !I too oversocialized my boy and had to work this through !
I Learned to say no ...Despite my character...I find it hard to Believe that there are so many people that Will touch your dog without your permission...And my boy Rocco is almost 40Kgs... Its insanity...
    Ps Nice content

I have to embarrassingly admit I’m a bit of a “feeder” myself but I always ask if it’s ok to do so before I offer a treat to some one else’s dog! My dog Penny for some reason is absolutely not food motivated but I certainly understand that most dogs are. I always make a point of making sure the treats I do offer are no grain and hypo allergenic. Still I understand it must be the other dogs human companion that must and should have the final say! I just have to admit I love making dogs in general happy! So more often than not I just offer the treats to the human member of the team to give it to their dog when and if it’s appropriate.

I understood your explanation about other people that are petting your dog , but....i myself think i'm very lucky that children can approach my dog Marly unconditional and i can trust her for the full100%! I'm talking about kids, that first ask me 'can i pet your dog?' Marly my GS doesn't care and they can touch here anywhere. Is that wrong? Also when i'm talking to people on the street it happens sometimes that someone is petting her a bit while we're talking. Is that also wrong? Just want to know your opinion about that. Greetings from Holland (again)

Hey no I don’t think it’s wrong and it’s actually a good thing. I was talking about my early days with Lucy when I’d have heaps of strangers all the time wanting to Pat Lucy and give her attention to the point it was disruptive to her training and manners. Back then I struggled to say no to people but it became a problem eventually. I do still let people Pat Lucy but I’ll invite them over on my terms, I don’t let people who just v-line straight for me and Lucy when we are out.

My dog went missing from our backyard in australia... fox terrier so he was small but had some testosterone. You just made me realise he was probably used as a bait dog..

I found this channel while searching for GS videos, they are my absolute fav- dogs, i've watch some of your videos and i like it, what a beautiful dog you have, Lucy is gorgeous.
I would have love to follow your journey but unfortunately i cannot subscribe because i am strongly against the using of pron or E-collar and using cage or tieing up DOGS, it doesn't matter how you use it i still think it is Animal Cruelty.

Tools are neither good or bad. They are all susceptible to incorrect use and abuse with some carrying greater potential and lower threshold for harm than others. Just like dogs, no breed is intrinsically better or worse than others, though bigger dogs have greater potential to cause greater injuries when things go wrong.
