    Cheers for this, I loved going round the Mournes when I did my Duke of Ed in school. Haven't been back since, but now in my 40s and after 2 years of 'rona related laziness and self destruction I'm ready to get out and feel the wind on my face. After such a long time away I'm back at level zero and your stuff is both inspiring and helpful, I never thought there'd be so many great wild camping UA-camrs in Northern Ireland!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Now that is cool that you are at the stage of returning to the Mournes after such a period👍 You will definitely feel the wind on your face😊 There is a great wild camping community on UA-cam and some great contributions from Northern Ireland. Appreciate that you find my trips helpful and inspiring and all the best for your own trips😊

    Wonderful Gerry! I always enjoy your visits and videos of the Mournes, they're like a soothing balm 😊The terrain can appear so gentle and friendly in your videos yet its true power is spelt out too. Loved the rolling clouds/mist shots and the close ups of flowing water and flowers. I thought of a bird building its nest while watching you set up your bivy and taking it down the next morning - basic shelter that works so well. So nice to see the reservoirs, rivers and surrounding mountains - makes me want to get back there soon! Loved the atmospherics of the mist...a really nice watch!

      Cheers Miriam, the Mournes are the place I was introduced to proper mountains and that has stayed with me. They are always cool to revisit and to plan trips that cover new ground. They are also brutal in their ascent and descent. It was cold and misty on the tops and definitely atmospheric😊

    That was a great hike Gerry, even though the views were somewhat curtailed due to the mist, lucky it wasnt frozen mist, { see what I did there .. } . Still pretty chilly for summer for dear sake. That ravine is def worth a visit. The cloud and mist time lapse with the accompanying music is up there with your best work Gerry. Big thumbs up mate. ATB Colin

      Cheers Colin👍 this one was from Easter and it was the wind on the top that made the chill bite, even though it wasn't quite frozen❄️😊 I actually quite like being lost up in the mist and the feeling of being totally alone that it brings, not great for filming though. The Kilkeel River as it drops into Ben Crom Reservoir is a fantastic place to explore. The Mournes are hard to beat😊

Kind of windy and a cold night out in the backcounty.. but always nice to see that hot food the following morning. Thanks for taking us along.

    You can't keep a good man down Gerry. You are some fit boyo! If I was ever going into the hills again you would be the man I'd want to be with! I was always struck by the silence of the Silent valley/Ben Crom and the lack of shrubs and trees on the slopes. I reckon some of the farmers are involved with setting fires to promote grass growth for their sheep. Fires happen across the water too at almost the same time of year. Fantastic views you are bringing home with you on camera!! You're a brave man in that wind and cold mist. Baltic! Aaaaah!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Tom, it is hard to know who has been setting those fires and they are so destructive to life and the environment. I just wish they would stop. There have been reductions in some of the sheep numbers in the Mournes and they do have an enormous impact on the landscape, stopping any of those shrubs or trees from growing. Hopefully as we move forward these wild places will return to a much more natural wild state and not just be overgrazed and lacking the enormous diversity that could be present. It was a great trip, even in the mist, and it was cool to explore new parts of the Mournes and have that baltic camp on Slieve Binninan❄️😊

    Radio 2, Gerry?! I thought you'd be a 4 listener. He he he. Another brilliant video. A great guide to the trek you took. I love the soundlessness of a mist on the mountains. Love how it dampens and muffles and forces us to whisper. 10 out of 10 again sir.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Alyn, I do BBC Radio Ulster for the talking stuff and Radio 2 is good for the music😊 The mist was all encompassing and down out of the wind it was perfectly still and that is a strange feeling as it impairs some of the senses. It was a great trip and I enjoyed the night on Slieve Binnian and walking over some new ground fro em in the Mournes👍😊

    I was very surprised to hear that there was parts of the mournes that you hadn't been to before 😄 I had a similar experience with the weather the other night, supposed to be nice and mild but it turned out to be baltic. This looked like another great bivy camp 👍

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Jason, there is lots of ground to cover in the Mournes and I am slowly and surely getting there😊 I think we both know that the weather in the mountains always has to be taken with a pinch of salt and it can can have a life of its own, especially when the cloud lowers over the tops. It was a great trip and I enjoyed covering that new ground😊

    That was a quere dander Gerry, fit as a fiddle! Some crackin footage there as usual, the time lapse over to Binnian looked amazing. Always wanted to explore the west side of the valley, never ventured far of the Banns road but will have to make a point to visit that waterfall! Brave man spending the night on Binnian, no sign of the Binnian light 👻 down near the quarry!? Thanks again for sharing your trip Gerry, much appreciated!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Gary👍 the walk over Slievenaglogh and down to the reservoir is one worth doing and you could probably spend hours around the four rivers that drop into the head of the Silent Valley Reservoir. With the mist there could have been all sorts of lights and I wouldn't have seen any of them, ghost or not 😊 It was cool to spent the night on Binnian and I would return for an evening/night that was clear with some views.

    Love the misty mountains gerry. But wow a fire a month ago this early in the season. Black hands but beautiful views and ha a pole. Good to see you follow that river. The dam looks like the Claerwen in the Cambrians. Imposing but not as imposing as those mountains. You got some great shots there as you always do. The pitch looked idea - a natural shelter and a table but the sleep not so great. Next time. Well, another fantastic explore. I trust you're well. Mark

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Mark, there have been quite a few serious fires in the Mourne Mountains over the past year, impacting significant areas of the mountains and most started deliberately☹️ Always good to follow a river, for a few hundred metres or many miles👍 I am well and I hope you are too.

      Cheers Merky👍 I have seen others camp on Doan and there seems to be spots to pitch okay. It is a wonderful viewpoint if you get the weather☀️ I know it is a busy wee top for visitors so like most wild camping a late set up and early departure before you get tramped upon😊

    Hello Gerry, where abouts do you park when starting at that side of the Mournes? I normally park at meelmore lodge where it's safe for the car, but it's at the opposite side of the Mournes so a little far away, great video by the way, very inspiring for getting out in the wild

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers👍 I would use Meelmore Lodge too for an overnight trip. For this one I parked at the Silent Valley, it costs £5 which is slightly cheaper than Meelmore and is secure too. I would put a 'camping overnight' note on the windscreen to let the security staff know. Have used it a few times for an overnight trip and all was good👍

      Carrick little is an other option. It's on the other side of Binnian there's two carparks up that lane beside the owners homes - £3 day / £5 night.
      I'm curious about parking at silent valley did you tell them on the way in? I was under the impression they don't like overnight parking there.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      I did leave a note on the dash that I was camping overnight so maybe that helped with letting them know there was no safety issue. I will try the parking at Carrick Little at some stage as £5 is a very reasonable price👍

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      David, the mist was sort of cool even though it meant there were no views from Slieve Binninan and it was great walking down the next morning in the still air with the thick mist. I use a GOPro Hero 9 for the talky stuff and a Panasonic Lumix for the other stuff😊

    • @DavidDoyleOutdoors

      David the Lumix was an expensive buy though it works for my style of filming and have had it a few years. The GoPro is fantastic in so many ways and if I didn't do all those static shots it would be all that I would need.
