  • A 26.5km walk with 1,250m of ascent in the glorious Nephin Beg Mountains in County Mayo. Perfect weather conditions with a notherly breeze and strong sunshine. Starting at Letterkeen Wood and following the Bangor Trail before taking the spur to Glennamong Mountain and then to Corannabinnia for a summit bivy. A beautiful evening watching the sun go down in the far west of Ireland. A return trip the next day taking in Ben Gorm Mountain and a beautiful corrie lough (Lough Doo).

    Wonderful! Gorgeous mountains and views over the coast- I can see why you love this area of Ireland! I really enjoy your video style of including moments of calm and nature, very peaceful and relaxing. Great that you had a 10:00 sunset, lots of evening to enjoy… and nice to have a breeze to keep the midges at bay. 😉

    I heard a cuckoo calling right at the start Gerry! Wow! Never seen a wee bridge like that before! It certainly does the job! You're right up there with the angels looking down! Fantastic views Gerry as the sun drops down. some of the climbing you are doing looks a tad dangerous so take care! You look as if you are on top of the world! There are never too many others around doing what you are doing!!! It's largely an empty world. Watch yourself you don't get blown away! Midgeeees! Aaaah! Another fanatstic walk climb scramble racked up Gerry! Wow!

    Beautiful filming and narration as always, Gerry. I was watching the evening time-lapse sequence and thinking...what on earth are those white creatures in the foreground? Still scratching my head when you then came on and explained what they were. I was gobsmacked, as in my ignorance I didn't even know there were mountain hares in Ireland. I knew the Irish hare is distinct from English or Scottish hares, but that was all I knew. It seems the lowland hare is a sub-species of the mountain hare, from what I have managed to find. Wonderful creatures. Shame on me for knowing so little about them. Were they grey or still white from their Winter coat? It was hard to tell from the film. I will mark out your route on my Ballycroy National Park walking map, with a view to using it in September if I get lucky enough with conditions. Although I am sure they will be rather damper than you had for your trip :). Thanks again for the work you put in on these great videos.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      James, I think they were sheep🐑 though I did rewatch to double check and didn't see anything else. The mountain hare is a wondrous thing to come across, usually disappearing at great speed. As far as I am aware they do not get a winter coat here in Ireland as the snow just doesn't last for any length of time, unlike the Scottish Mountains where it stays for months. There is fantastic walking all around the Nephin Begs, though I would want good weather conditions☀️ for a visit too😊 Thank you👍

    • @jimguitarfan
      @jimguitarfan 2 роки тому +1

      @@gerrymcveigh Haha, I thought the white coat thing was a bit puzzling as the snow even on the high tops is usually pretty fleeting in Ireland due to the gulf stream influence being much greater than in Scotland (also the relative low altitude of the tops and latitude difference to typical Scottish mountains in the central Highlands here); and so it makes no evolutionary sense for the white coat....visible to predators and all that. I think the time-lapse threw me as it was hard to read the movement of the animals. That's my excuse anyway :). Yes, I have been lucky enough to see the mountain hares here with the remnants of their winter coat in Spring and they are quite shy creatures for the most part. In one glen I was at they seemed very numerous, but according to what I read, local populations can vary a lot. There is also to some extent a persecution problem from some landowners who consider them as competition for grouse, which are reared for toffs to shoot at. Very sad, but hopefully not too widespread, as it has become a political issue here now, which is good. Yes, I have walked a small section of the Bangor Trail in normal conditions....and it was very, very boggy. So I am hoping for favourable weather this time around. North Mayo can be very wet once Autumn sets in, as you will know yourself :)

    Your fam must worry a lot with all that “scrambling” you do! Beautiful video as always, those patches of trees- do they grow like that naturally or are they cut like that?, and those clouds are so awesome- that’s time lapsed when they move that fast?

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Cheers Clarissa👍 The scrambling felt airy though wasn't too difficult😊 I send regular posts back through social media to update family on where I am at and there are not too many places in Ireland without mobile signal (though there are definitely a few). There are very few trees on the hills due to sheep eating pretty much everything before it has a chance to grow, though when you do come upon isolated trees they look amazing. Hopefully all this will change as we go forward as upland grazing is reduced. Yes I did do a few Timelapse's of the clouds as they lowered in the evening.
