Truth is, I don't recall Bratz and Barbie ever affecting my self-image and self-esteem. But the perfectly-styled pop stars on TV and airbrushed models in magazines? They sure did. The problem isn't with the dolls, it's with our society.
Erika Photoshop in magazines seems like it would be way more confusing to children than the proportions of plastic toys.

Erika Honest to god tho, it was the people on TV. I knew the toys were toys and payed no mind to them and just used them for playing. The magazines and internet were what got me insecure.
A big chunk of kids are aware that toys aren't real life. They know it's all make believe. It rarely influences them in the way parents think they get influenced. It's true, if anything will influence kids, it's the REAL life celebrities. Because they know those are real people so it must be ok to be like them more.
As a black girl, I really appreciated that they had a dark skin doll. Bratz dolls were appealing because of the diversity, every girl would feel included.

They had Asian, Hispanic, black and white dolls. It was kind of revolutionary in my country to see toys and people of colour, since the borders were practically closed until 1990s.
Also for tomboy me, a doll that wore classic jeans won for me instead of pink skirts.

People seem to not notice that the Bratz were suppose to be the Anti-Barbie, showing girls that you don't have to be pink and preppy to be pretty. Beauty come in different styles and every clothing trend is fashionable in its own way. Whether it was being glamorous, tomboyish, goth, or just casual the Bratz showed that anything can make you look pretty. It's all about expressing yourself for who you are. That's what I love about the Bratz is that they thought me to be my own stylish self.

I am a Hispanic girl. I was born and raised in the literal projects of Brooklyn New York where everything was dirty and mucky, but if there was one thing it had, was diversity. There were so many Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians that lived in my neighborhood and growing up I never liked Barbie because of the fact that she didn’t seem like a doll I could relate to. But when I was able to obtain a bratz doll I fell in love. The Yasmin doll looked just like my sister and myself, so it really felt like a doll line that represented Me. I loved those dolls and still do love them. They were some of the only toy lines that catered to something that wasn’t basic white girl who wears pink and gets everything she wants.

Bratz never affected me negatively, whereas Barbies had me wondering why I didn't have straight, long blond hair sometimes, honestly. Like, I liked barbie as a kid, but I was one of those kids who noticed things sometimes, and I noticed I wasn't like white, blond, blue-eyed barbie a bit later. Bratz made me happy about being black and in my struggle with conforming to certain styles, Bratz was always switching it up.

Its kinda weird that the only doll line that had a lot of non-white/ethnically ambiguous characters were sexualised. As if POC are only acceptable if they are sexually attractive.
I grew up in India where ads for skin bleaching creams were totally fine btw and even though I appreciated the Bratz dolls had skin colour similar to mine I still felt like they weren't they weren't fleshed out like Barbie dolls were. I muchh preferred the Alexa doll from the Barbie and the diamond castle movie. Still have it on my dresser lol.

I think the major appeal of Bratz was that they reflected fashion and trends of the day. I think people tend to forget that kids aren’t stupid of course they want to play with dolls who wear things that they see in the world. People also forget that Barbie was controversial when she first came out because she had a figure and wore fashions a young adult would. It’s all just pretend play ya know?

Dcs Cruz I had tons, both girls and boys and they were always smooth. May I ask for a link? Also I feel like ‘stripper’ is a bit of an exaggeration. If you look at teen magazines from the time the outfits are pretty similar.
I personally never saw the appeal. Then again, I was never into dolls when I was a kid. I was always weirded out by their freakishly huge lips- they looked like Kylie Jenner had gotten her mouth caught in a vacuum cleaner.

Bratz will forever be my favorite doll line. They don’t get enough credit for being so diverse. They may be too “sexy” but that’s what I love about them. They’re aren’t basic like Barbie and they were always wearing trendy clothes which I think made them popular. Also Sasha deserves more love

Hey, doll expert here. The thing about Bratz that drew in doll collectors was their amazing quality. They used things like real denim and zippers and things and included so much high quality stuff that you just can't get in dolls anymore. Not to mention each doll came with a bucket load of extra clothes and accessories that no other line has consistently done. MGA's new line of dolls "LOL Surprise OMG" (not the babies the fashion dolls) has been the only other line of dolls I know of to match that, unless you're looking at expensive collector dolls. Kids liked Bratz because they're not *boring* like Barbie was. They were cool and the whole message of expressing yourself really stuck to a lot of people I know. Bratzillaz was their attempt at buying in on the Monster High craze, but completely flopped unfortunately. MGA keeps hinting at more Bratz products but never saying anything else. It's really uncertain if Bratz is truly over or not and we're in a really weird limbo atm
Honestly, I kind of absolutely hate LOL. It's not comparable in any way to Bratz. Bratz are full size dolls that came with all of the extra accessories shown, so you can see which doll and what clothes you're getting.
The thing about LOL surprises is that, well, they are surprises. You will not know which doll you'll be getting until you have already bought the product. That would've been okay if they weren't overpriced as all hell and weren't basically a scheme to get as much money from the poor parents as possible. It's actually very likely for you to get duplicates if you buy two or more of the same line , and what does the parents get? An (justifiably) angry child, with no ability to return the product.
That, and also the fact that they are just babies. The bratz dolls, as you mentioned, are very high quality, articulation, full outfits and stylish, relevant clothing. Those babies look arguably even creepier, with their puckered up lips with a tiny hole. Speaking of the hole, most of the lines feature an ability where you can fill the doll with water, and the doll will either cry, drool, or... Pee. Not that surprising coming from a company that has a toy line named "Poopsie slime", but still kind of gross.
These toys also use an unjustifiable amount of plastic, and some of the things they count as "surprises" are literally just the containers the toys come in, or the handle for that container. I'm sure no child in the history of ever went "aww man, a plastic handle for my plastic container? Cool!" That is false advertisement. Just specify the actual amount of surprises, don't count every single useless bit of plastic as a "surprise".
The only thing that I like about there dolls is that they continue the legacy of Bratz with their ethic diversity, but aside from that fact, they are overpriced, falsely marketed, borderline creepy products.

@@kiks4757 yes! Real metal was a little rarer but definitely denim! I have so many Bratz clothes that are such high quality in my doll clothes stash. They also run dye when they're washed sometimes, which is also an indication on quality in doll clothes (weird, I know).

Honestly I'm disappointed you burned the dolls instead of giving them to a thrift store. A kid from a low-income family could have lucked out and got a brand new $50 collector doll for cheap. That's a nice quality doll that would last a long time with a kid.

one of the main things my grandmother and dad would tell me a lot whenever i would be playing with a bratz doll as a kid, would be that they looked unnatural, their lips were too big, they were too curvy and they would effect my self esteem as i grew up. however, my mom, who comes from a diverse family, having a half hawaiian, half white mother, and a mexican father, would never say anything about it and would be happy to buy the dolls for me. as my dad's family are completely white, i don't think they were exposed to people of colour as much, whereas my mom was, and knew that there really were a lot of people with curvy bodies and big lips, and didn't see a problem with bratz dolls.
also, growing up, i never felt inclined to look like bratz or barbie dolls. personally, i dont think that it is the influences we have as kids that makes us insecure as we grow up, it's society around us.
I completely agree with you. I think Bratz dolls model a different art/makeup style as well as cultural styles of various different kinds of people. As a kid I didn't pay attention the diversity much (I'm Indian btw), I thought it just felt right. It felt natural to me so that's why I didn't think twice about it because being surrounded by different kinds of people is how it is at school growing up and how it's supposed to be (at least in America and other western nations which are less culturally/ethnically homogenous).
And I most certainly agree that perhaps your father and his family weren't exposed to poc communities and culture where those features are completely normal and common, so it was strange to them. Moreso cultural differences than anything else because a white girl having those kinds of features might come off as overly sexualized, but those same features are just naturally found in communities of poc so it's a cultural bridge that needs to be closed.
The end was really necesary? You could have just given the dolls to someone who really valuates them.

Not only did bratz have the best fashion for a doll line at that time:
-there was diversity
-the commercials were EXCELLENT. I still watch them from time to time lol
- their CD's were also GREAT. They had some really good producers, songwriters, and singers for their albums.
-the quality of the dolls and accessories were amazing, from the clothes using real jean fabric, real fabric handbags, REAL WORKING SEATBELTS IN THE CARS, etc, especially the earlier lines. Once you get to 2010 and above, it's not as consistent in quality.
-They always came with an insane amount of accessories and extra outfits.
-They also put a lot of thought into their "Boyz" line.
And yes! The Bratz community is still active and were flipping shit that you opened all 3 of those dolls. ESPECIALLY THE BRATZ BABY.😭

@Marcelle the Barbie line started out with only caucasian blonde dolls. Bratz started with 4 racially ambiguous dolls. And that number kept growing as time progressed. For their time, they were the most diverse collection of dolls.

Bratz were still diverse regardless of them using the same mold for every doll (for budget purposes).
Barbie only created a black doll because people were complaining. That's usually what happens everytime barbie attempts to diversify their brand. They wait for someone to complain before they do it. And only then, it was still just black and white dolls, nothing else. AND the black dolls all had straight hair. I dont ever remember seeing or having a textured hair black barbie until after Bratz hit the scene.
Bratz used different hair textures for different dolls and different lines. Different dolls had different birth marks (Yasmin dolls always have a mole below her left eye) Sasha wasn't the only "black" doll, they had different shades spanning from Felicia (from the Bratz Sweet Dreamz collection) who is the darkest doll out of the entire franchise to one's like Destiny (from the Bratz 2008 Passion 4 fashion line, I believe) who was a honey brown and favored Beyonce or Ciara. It doesn't only stop at "black" dolls. Jade wasn't the only "Asian" doll. You can literally tell a Kumi doll apart from a Jade doll. They don't look the same at all if you pay attention.
Bratz also had backstories and personalities to the main four dolls (and a few others, including some boys) to separate them from each other. They all had their own interests and quirks about them that could let a little girl chose a favorite between characters. Barbie was just barbie, who could be anything. There wasn't much of a backstory or depth to barbie (besides her original story from the 50s) until Bratz came out.
Either way, Bratz pushed the norm for the doll scene in the 00s and influenced many other doll lines such as MyScene.
I liked that the brats dolls looked like me. I was a black kid with big lips and brown skin. Barbie didnt have that.

Yes! Many people in my family (not me I'll admit) have big eyes, big lips, various skin shades etc. It felting comforting in a way that Barbie couldn't. Not to mention that the multi-racial dolls from Barbie came WAY later. Bratz established that AND respected the cultures of those dolls (even if only mentioning it briefly).

The only impact Bratz had on me was turning me into a bad b*tch as I got older with a passion 4 fashion and making me way more aware of different ethnic groups and races as a child. ;) They were truly living in the future with their sense of style, also parents shouldn't look for a DOLL to be a role model for their children smh. Also, there was not a lot of mentioning of the DIVERSITY of the dolls like Ummm, hello, that's literally one of two of the main reasons they were popularized, other reason being the fashion sens that wasn't bland, would always switch upon any occasion, and could match any theme, besides having Barbie's pink and purple bland fashion choices. They were representation for ALL of us POC.
don't mean to be rude but bratz was monumental to my childhood and i feel like you didn't really go in depth with what made them so appealing. racial diversity was a HUGE thing for me as a little asian kid that immigrated to a predominantly white country. they placed an emphasis on self-expression and defying societal rules and expectations, while placing a big importance on friendship and fun which is just real wholesome. idk i just really love bratz and i wish this vid had a lil more heart

@Marcelle the key thing about bratz is that the diversity was the face of their brand rather than poc being added in as a friend or a side character. on the other hand, the two most well known names for the barbie brand as far as it was in my country were barbie and ken. this made it harder for me to identify with and enjoy barbie as a kid, because i was made to feel as though asian people will always be a side character of sorts.

Fairly recently (as in 4 years ago or so) I was able to get an old Sasha doll for 2 bucks at a farmer's market thing near me.
I mean- her left foot got popped off and replaced by Chloe's foot, which was definitely apart of the reason it was so cheap, but still- That was a great deal for such an old doll.
The woman who sold it to me and my mother was just trying to get rid of a bunch of her daughter's old things (with the daughter's permission) so I really don't think either of them saw the value in keeping the doll around. (Which my mother totally saw)
So now I have best girl Sasha in my room, just chillin, with Chloe's attached foot. I mean- like they said in the series theme song: "They'll always be there for each other"

fun fact : in the bratz tv show, the tweevils and burdine are basically the embodiment of barbie in the bratz universe. the love of pink and how classic burdine liked things to be (when burdine was on screen, classical music had played) this also could be why those three never got dolls

Bratz were different from Barbie. They had different ethnicities and they had a bold style for fashion. The Bratz had a message: Be who you want to be and no one can stop you. The Bratz were a huge influence in my life and I saw them as my bestfriends, as I went through a very dark period at the age of like 8 to 10 (this lasted when I was 16). Until this day, they remain a huge impact on my life.

Barbie has also different ethnicities, Barbies AA friend Christie was introtuced in 1968, her hispanic friend Teresa in 1988 and her Asian friend Kira also in the 80's.
No one knew about any of other barbies ethnic friends because Mattel didn’t advertise them to the extent the white classic Barbie was. Bratz was diverse straight off the bat and didn’t used it as a selling point. Just recently when all the “Barbie isn’t diverse enough” controversy happened is when Mattel decided to release the diverse line and put the light on that. Barbie does have positive messages just like Bratz in the sense that young girls can group up and be whoever they want to be.

Alyssa In This Gig Dot Com Girl, as a hispanic you has lived in a majority hispanic area my whole life, I promise you none of us have ever seen Teresa marketed in stores as kids. Never heard of her until now, plus The Bratz didn’t have to pretend to care about diversity by throwing out one doll with no promotion what so ever once in the decade and call it day. They gave us a hispanic character with a personality and fashion style from the start. Yasmin was a main character too- not Chloe’s best friend- but an important character as well as is the same case with Sasha and Jade.
I loved bratz dolls growing up. Being black, I always had “massive” lips so seeing a doll that looked like me made me feel normal for once 😂

The Bratzillaz are like a spin-off series of the Bratz. The original Bratz was an answer to Barbie and the Bratzillaz were an answer to Monster High.
The Bratz's charm were in the clothes. Barbie had a basic classic style but the Bratz were super contemporary. (That's how they got away with the basic articulation)
But in the end, Monster High snatched Bratz' weave and used it for Frankie Stein's new hairdo.

He was comparing the animation style of that first movie to Lord Voldemort, not the actual dolls. Even if he did, they're just dolls. You act like he's insulting real people. You can like Bratz, but not everyone is going to have the same opinion as you about them, and there's nothing wrong with that. Every kind of doll has weird features that some of us appreciate, some of us will ignore, and some of us will dislike.
I didn't agree with his opinion on how the dolls looked, since dolls always have exaggerated facial features (and don't say I'm following the beauty standards of white women, because no non-white woman has those facial proportions, even if they have huge lips, because they are DOLLS), but he was just expressing his opinion on the way the dolls looked and I doubt he meant any harm. He was just being funny. I liked Bratz as a kid, but I still laughed and I liked his video overall.
Why burn the dolls though? They could've been given to somebody who really wanted, but never got one. Really sucks to see good quality dolls wasted but I understand it's your money.

Forgive me for I have sinned and I was absolutely obsessed with Bratz as a child. The two movies you mentioned were my favorites as a kid and I kind of watch them to this day for nostalgic reasons. My parents didn't care if I liked them, if anything they thought it was harmless that I liked the way they dressed. Didn't actually want to, but the young me thought they were really cool. I liked them better than Barbie and MyScene. Also, I am grateful to know I'm not the only who played with these dolls. I was the only one in my class who appreciated them. Thanks again, Negative Legend for bringing my childhood back to the light a little, even if they do look alien. I think I chose to look over that fact.

I NEVER looked at a Bratz doll’s flat ass and detachable feet as a negative impact on my psychology. They were just dolls to me. I loved them because I loved playing with hair and clothing and also because each one represented a different ethnicity/race. I found them better than Barbies because I was able to be a lot more creative with them. Looking at them now as an adult, I gotta say they still look more fun to play with than the other dolls lol

You know, one thing I remember when having these dolls was the representation that they portrayed. You had an asian, latina, black, and white doll all packaged together in the same universe. At the time, I recall seeing Nikki and how it seemed as though the Barbie company treated her as a second rate doll. I can’t even remember her backstory or anything important about her at the time. But with Bratz, Sasha, Yasmine, Jade, and Chloe all seemed to be treated equally. They generally were like best friends and Sasha most definitely had beautiful designs and clothing unlike Nikki who seemed pale in comparison. That was my opinion when I was kid🤔

“Passion for fashion” is the motto that I live for ever since I fell in love with Bratz, been drawing my whole life and Bratz along with barbie movies inspired me so much to be a fashion designer. Knowing barbie as “you can be anything you want” motivate me more to achieve my dream when growing up. I just turned 18, going to apply for an animation school in Japan. I felt as if theres tons of people having problem with the dolls because of their clothing, their heavy makeup, too sexy or their personality is just just abt “fashion” which come off as vain to people, but you see, as children we don’t see the doll as hot figure with nice waist we just play with them like any other toys. You wouldn’t know how many of these barbie/bratz movies inspire young children when growing up, and it feels heartwarming to look back. I love them and am grateful for them being inspirational to me since young. They gave me a pleasant childhood :))))

The last doll’s jointing is called “bend and snap”. A lot of barbies have them. Most dolls with rubber legs have bend and snap articulation. ☺️

When talking about how it was cool that Bratz dolls weren’t just white you said “okay I may get that it possibly can play in their favour...”
as if that weren’t a HUGE reason for their success.
The fashion that Bratz wear, their features (hips and big lips) and their huge diversity, were absolutely not popular in the white community when they came out. While Barbie Dolls were stick thin (nothing wrong with that, I myself loved Barbie), blonde, white and blue-eyed, Always wearing pink dresses and high heels, Bratz *explored* and actually gave a chance to many little girls to see themselves represented. This is something that many white people fail to understand, unfortunately (“why care about skin color? It doesn’t matter”), you have no idea how important it is for little girls to see themselves represented as beautiful. Because if they don’t, they’ll subconsciously think it’s for a reason: their race and features aren’t considered beautiful by society thus they don’t appear in dolls, tv shows, magazines... and it’s how we get issues such as skin bleaching being so huge in sub Saharan Africa and India.
I know my mom would always buy me Bratz dolls, even though she could’ve paid for 1/3 of the price for a blonde white doll; because bratz dolls were literally the ONLY doll line that had black (and dark skinned) dolls. Let alone all the other ethnicities they introduced later on!
It just bothers me a lot how you brushed it off like some small detail that may quickly be a positive thing and not as if it was extremely important and crucial in the healthy growth of children of minorities in predominantly white countries.

The fact that Hayden Williams designs and illustrates the bratz dolls is simply mind blowing to me as a fan of both as the designs are really, really gorgeous and fashion forward!

Growing up dolls like bratz, barbie, monster high, etc. never had an impact on my self-esteem or made me self-conscious about the way I looked, I just liked playing with them and just thought they were pretty. seeing poc dolls in bratz tho really made me feel happy to see a doll that looked like me! I also loved the movies and still do to this day.

Aww, this was a bit disappointing, since I've been waiting for someone to talk about Bratz on youtube. I actually thought this was gonna talk about how underrated Bratz is. As a kid you wouldn't instantly "see" that Barbie didn't look like you but you'd definitely realized you looked like one of the Bratz girls fast, and you instantly find a connection. Not only are their designs timeless (just check their clothes from the beginning, they are so ahead of their time) but also did such a good job at sending the message of being who you are, and being passionate about what you wanna do, can get you far and give confidence. I'm glad they're back but they aren't getting the recognition that they deserve. Mattel tried to copy too when they made My Scene btw, so it just sucks that they "financially drained" MGA, I'm assuming. Also, their movies were actually pretty good for the budget and the animation wasn't that bad, it was in the early 2000s. They had amazing voice actors even, like Lacey Chabert, Kaley Cuoco, Tia Mowry and the iconic Wendie Malick. Glad you noticed the improvements tho. I just wish you really didn't ruin your dolls. Been saving up for one and just, it was hard to watch.

I agree. I think they helped me when I was little honestly. Sasha was one of the only black characters on the networks I was allowed to watch. And she wasn't crazy (there were still some issues) stereotypical -- I sorta dislike how he made them out as, but it just goes to show that he can't relate to this (which makes sense and isn't really his fault but still).
