CNC Plasma - Torch Height Controller - THC3T-02 installation - Should you get one? Absolutely yes!!!

    I was trying to find the best parameters for a clean cut with my CNC plasma cutter and started noticing that the thin sheet metal started to bend (warp) like crazy. Some time, the sheet even got stuck to the tip of the torch and gor dragged with it. This will happen less if you are cutting a thick piece of metal plate. I intend to do more metal art so most likely will be dealing with thin pieces so I decided to get a THC system to avoid this problem that will lead to a total failure of the cutting job.
    The cheapest THC system that I found on eBay called THC3T-02:

    The THC can work in 2 modes:
    - Up/Down mode: like any other THC on the market. In this mode, the THC system will send the signal for the Z axis to move Up or Down depending on the set height. The Z axis will be controlled through the Mach3 board.
    - Step/Dir mode (stand alone mode): very suitable for cheap Mach3 control board like mine that doesn't support the Up/Down mode. In this mode,The Z axis stepper motor is controlled directly through the THC.
    The wiring was easy and the system is compatible with almost any plasma cutter on the market (including mine, Plasma cutter Cut50P). You won't even need to open your plasma cutter to wire the Arc Voltage Divider board.
    Only one thing to pay attention to in the STEP/DIR mode is the direction of the Z axis. If your Z axis was moving correctly before installing the THC, don't try to change the direction of the Z axis by swapping the wire of the stepper motor or change DirActiveLow in Mach3. This only make Mach3 and the THC work in opposite directions. The correct way to do it is to input Dir- and Step- output from the the THC to Dir+ and Pulse+ on the stepper motor driver and the 5V wire to Dir- and Pulse-. This solution will reverse the direction of the Z axis and also make the system work correctly with Mach3.
    In the end, the THC system work really awesome. On a bent piece of sheet metal, the torch follow the curve down and up nicely, maintaining the set height without crashing the torch into the piece.
    With this system installed, I can have a peace of mind working a thin sheet metals. I surely recommend every one to get a THC system (not sure the more expensive one will work better but this one is cheap and can work with any controller board).

    Incredible! Is the same THC, I do have the same controller, but I'm using the 5axis one. But basically the same electronics. Good Work!!

      The installation is pretty simple. only need to make sure that if you got your Z axis reversed compare to what you have before, don't try to change anything in mach3 or with the wires of the stepper motor. Just reverse the dir- and step- on the stepper motor driver (connect them to dir+ and step+).

    Great explanation of the test-adjust cycle. I do think people who are to mount your CNC Plasma have to watch your video at least 3 times in a row and the fourth at 2/3 speed ;) You seem to be always in a hurry ;) I agree that the last cut is incredibly decent to say a few. You come slowly close to your own specification note. Awesome!
    (FR) la carte contrôleur mach3 a failli encore une fois ;) être le noeud qui fâche, mais comme d'habitude tu as trouvé la bonne solution pour contourner ses limites. Merci de rester dans les limites de l'abordable financièrement. Les éléments Vietnamiens sont bienvenus vu leur prix mais ça ne restera pas toujours comme ça, je suppose. Un peu étonné par la liaison db9, mais on est un peu dans la puissance. ça me rappelle mes jeunes années où tout ce qui était applications industrielles utilisaient ce connecteur. Sinon la meilleure nouvelle, c'est que tu vas encore bosser ta machine pour arriver à une excellente - je n'en doute pas - et plus d'un ici regarde avec attention la qualité de tes découpes. Après quand tout cela sera parfait, on prendra une calculette et je suis sûr qu'à qualité égale ta CNC plasma vaudra le 1/3 de celles sur le marché. Sinon, j'ai vu que dans le Maryland le coronavirus a infecté plus de 500 hier. Je n'ai pas besoin de te dire qu'il faut faire attention à la famille... Porte-toi bien et Joyeuse fête!

      Didn't realize that I spoke too fast. I have habits to present the whole year work within a few minutes in some conferences and didn't think much about it when making the videos. Will try to allow down next time.

      That's a dc step down from 36v to 24v to power the THC

      The arcOK is connected from the Thc to an input of the controller board, not the relay

      The relay is to turn on and off the plasma arc, it need to be connected to an output

    Hello Minh, I would like to know if the cable that connects the voltage sensor with the controller is short by necessity or it is possible to use several meters, because the plasma machine is usually at a great distance from the computer, for example 3 meters.

      Yes, the manual recommend to have the cable as short as possible so the divider board can read the change in voltage as fast and as accurated as possible. You should stick the divider board on the plasma cutter itself. The Thc unit can be further away from the plasma cutter.

      The dir- and step- go to dir+ and step+ on the dm542. This really depends on your machine. If the Z axis direction is reverse compared to what you had before, just put the dir- and step- into dir- and step- on the dm542.

      For setting up U, you will have to read the number from P mode. Set your amperage on your plasma cutter, maybe 45amps, not sure what amperage you wanted to used. Turn on the torch and read P, get the biggest and smallest number, add them together, divide by 2. That's the number for U. For delay, D, set around 10 (1s). S around 150 to 200. V is really depend on the speed of your Z axis stepper motor. Try with 40 or 50 first.

      you connect a relay to a pin on the breakout and give an m3 commnad the relay will activate the torch via the pins on your plasma cutter

    Could you help me with some component values on this board?
    Would like to reverse only the Voltage divider/filter part.
    So it can be fed in a voltage > Freqency converter ie. lm331.
    That way linuxcnc can read the arc volt and control the height.

      Sorry, first thing, I don't have this THC system anymore and cannot read whatever on the board. If I understand correctly, you want to convert the arc voltage to frequencies and input that frequencies to your Linux CNC board? You can always by a arc voltage divider board separately and use the voltage that is already divided and convert that value to frequencies. There are some cheap one on eBay or Aliexpress.

      Yes you are correct, I want to convert the arc voltage to freqency. That's the easy part.
      Problem is the filtering out of the hv/hf start when connecting without opening the machine.

      I'm buying a sf-hc25g thc system from AliExpress and it has a arc voltage divider board. The interesting part about this divider board that the controller board (mach3 or whatever) will send the arc start signal to it and the divider board will have it own relay to start the arc and read the arc voltage. I hope that it will have a filter integrated on the board.

      Seen those as well altough they seem to have less filtering.When you don't mind opening the machine you can connect it before the HF coil.

      Not sure for mach3, for linuxcnc you only need the voltage->freqency input on a encoder, it can do the Arc ok, torch up/down etc. in software without a sepperate controller
