Stretch every dollar and you can probably live off $1500 a month as a single man in Des Moines. Eventually, though, you get tired with not having privacy. You get tired of having to spend an hour a day every day simply prepping food. You get tired of not having a nice night out with friends. And that doesn’t even factor in once you have kids. You really want to live in some low cost area where your kids will attend subpar schools and be surrounded by bad influences? You really want to say that youth sports, dance class, etc are “out of the budget”? You really want to never have a good family vacation? And this doesn’t even touch on the cost of keeping the kids alive. I’ve seen people who manage to get $1.3M in liquid net worth by their mid 30’s and retire. And their life doesn’t look better than mine. Instead of spending money, they’re spending time deal hunting, coupon clipping, DIYing everything.
Contrary to the negative comments, I understand what the kid is really asking, even though he did not explain or ask his question very well. He‘s wants to “retire early” by either buying a small home to eliminate one’s biggest expense (a home) or just pursuing FIRE. He’s just not sure which direction he wants to take. He wants to focus more on work he loves by either paying off a small home to have minimal expenses OR wait and save lots of money to supplement his lifestyle.
