The old Valley was a top ground in it's day. Everyone who visited would comment on it's size and grandeur. I wish we still had the old place of concrete and crash barriers and not all steel and plastic. Those were the days. great piece of film.
Brings back memories when I was 16, 1977, opening game of season, beautiful sunny day, only time I went there, thought how massive that west stand was. Charlton 0.2 Cardiff, Derek Showers scored both goals.
It actually hasn't changed much at all! Those block of flats are such a big symbol of the ground! I sit in the Upper North and see those Flats every week, The Valley is home for so many Supporters!
I used to stay in Sidcup and went to the Old Valley in the late 70s on a number of occasions, one of which was when Derek Hales and Mike Flanagan, who were playing for Charlton were sent off off for fighting each other against Maidstone in the FA cup. Another of the games I went to was a a great game against Brighton which Charlton won 4-3. I know it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I really liked that stadium.
Wonderful, its the way i remember The Valley looking, that huge terrace used to go all the way round one end too, they say it wasnt even full when Charlton had over 75,000 in there !

Visit it once when I was in England for a match vs Middlesbrough. That stand against the hill had something special .....I never forget.
Rock band THE WHO played a gig their in 1974, one of the loudest rock gig's ever recorded. 🎸🎤✌️
@richy251979 I used to stand on that terrace as a kid with my dad.......it was said to have held 40,000 and was the biggest single terrace in Europe.
I would get over the old toilets to see the reds want I was young
I think the valley was the biggest Club ground in England at one stage in the 70s,
I went several times around 76/77 when Derek Hales was playing. I don't recall the away end being covered, must have been shortly after.
About 1980 M8
Cheers Steve@@stevedrew9857
how big was that open terrace! massive
Big ground sure, but only half the size of Hampden Park in it's prime.
The song is called "Angela Undress" and it's by Thomas Newman, it's apart of Thomas Newman's soundtrack for the film American Beauty.
i was there
love the old west stand i once had to sit in lennies office vs newcastle
my dad used to stand on the massive terrace every game
What was the capacity of the old Valley, and how many did that terrace alone hold ?
I'm too young though. Was only seven months old when they were forced to move out. Terrible times
Lol thanks for the reply. Sadly I found that out a few days after I posted the comment, cheers though :)
great video used sit in the west stand loved it where is it now?any memorabelia still kicking around?
Love the music mate. It’s a little like Nine Inch Nails.
Charlton till I die⚽️
Why have u got a millwalll badge then ?
Didn’t 40’OOO turn up for Charlton v the Tottenham hooks in 1979?
I was at that game as a Spurs supporter. Unfortunately for me Charlton won 4-1. As I recall the official attendance was close to the 30,000 mark.
Why did they shut the old valley back in the mid eighties??
Believe it was financially motivated, and the old east terrace was deemed unsafe when they decided to return.
Does anyone know what this background music is called and who by?
Mental Boy - Thomas Newman
anyone know the name of that piano track playing??
The songs called 'the penis jugglers' by a solo artist called the royal blood.
It was bad 😞
Great days
