Rare 1980 Footage of Funky Four Plus One, Live at The Kitchen, NYC

  • Legendary original school quintet Funky Four Plus One performing their Enjoy Records classic “Rappin and Rockin the House” live at NYC’s The Kitchen in 1980.
From the event “Dubbed in Glamour” - one of three consecutive nights in late November of that year devoted to the creative women of the downtown music and art scene curated by art writer Edit DeAk and featuring Tina L’Hotsky, Anya Phillips, Pattie Astor, Cookie Muller, Debbie Harry, Bush Tetras, Vivienne Dick and others (peep the original poster art image in the gallery).
Sha-Rock‘s performance with her upper Bronx crew was apparently a highlight of the program and it’s easy to see why based on this.
The Funky Four: K.K. Rockwell, Li'l Rodney C!, Keith Keith, Jazzy Jeff & Sha Rock

She's better than everyone because all the rest had their entire life to figure it out and practice and essentially copy, She had to "come up to speed" in a matter of months (maybe a few years from the very 1st) , that's genius. AND it was not cool back then as it is now so negativity from most ppl, unlike now, not to mention no $$. It's like the kid who get's an A studying the night before vs the kid who get's an A and studied all year and went to summer school.. (and yeah, it's not from a google search, we there doin the same, well trying ;) )

Sha Rock was clear and her Rhymes were strong. She was definitely the prime example of what a female MC should sound like. If anything she should be in the R&R hall of fame by herself. Ahead of anyone you can even think of.

The only other female hiphop artist who has her talents, at least lyrically; coming from a person born in ‘83, is Lady of Rage with her song Afro Puffs. “Read. Learn a new word everyday, and study the rhythm and flow of poetry” (Lady of Rage, 1994??? And idk).

Someone's spent a lot of time on it. It certainly has anti-shake processing used on it to keep the crew steady (see the background and mic stands bouncing around). It works so well actually. The footage must've been bouncy as f to start off with. Someone loves it, they really took their time and did a cracking job on it. It looks amazing.

OMG, where did you get this?? It should be archived at the Smithsonian! This needs to be preserved for future generations. I was a big fan of the group back in the day just based on their tapes and then their records. I was too young to see them live and I missed their TV appearance on SNL, so this video is a welcome surprise. My given name is Rodney and my middle initial is C, so you can guess who my favorite member of the group was...after Sha-Rock that is.

And I’m positive someone will preserve the ones on UA-cam my friend. Sometimes regular, intelligent, everyday people know what should be preserved better than all these huge corporations. I mean look at how Paramount and Universal treat their treasures? (Like crap lol) a few years ago the set used to film Lon Chaney’s phantom of the opera was torn down, Universal tossed the last mold of Bruce (from Jaws) in a junkyard. If it weren’t for “some guy” who found it, realized what it was, thought ‘man this shit is fucking cool’, and half restored it then an iconic prop would’ve been lost forever. Thankfully the jaws prop is 💯 restored and on display in a world class museum. Might have to Google it. Hope my long winded story proved the point I was making about sometimes people are better at knowing what needs to be preserved than big companies

Funky 4+1 are one example of that. To do it whilst having a female in a male dominated genre whilst not over sexualising her, but treating her as an artist in her own right should be championed a lot more!

I never heard of this before. This is true hip-hop ... To me this is better than Rappers Delight.
Sha Rock is out of this world with powerful rhymes, bars, and flows .
    Flawless

FACK this is one of the few videos that is actually worthy of the term "RARE"!! it was NOT easy to shot back then in such low light conditions ..if not impossible, that's why there is almost NO footage at clubs like this back then, this needs to be preserved! should be in the Smithsonian!

They was nice back then. Lil Rodney Cee was that dude. Crash Crew and them were the truth. Sugar Hill Gang was commercial. Treacherous 3, Cold Crush, Force MCs, Funky 4 Crash Crew were the real back then. It was about lyrics and routines.

My uncle grew up with these guys and traveled with them to plenty of their shows
and hung out with them before the success of the music
( mainly with the lead MC / KK Rockwell ) He used to come to Harlem from the Bx
and let us hear the tapes of the jams and fill us in on all the info about group,
So me my brother & sisters were all in like listening to inside scoop similar to
the reality show like Love & HipHop but back in 1979 to about 1983 when
WildStyle came to the movies. My Uncle Vamp was a ball player and could of been
in the group if he choose to but like I said he was on the blacktop putting in the work.
    Shout out to Vamp,
The Funky 4 plus One, Double Trouble
    and
Rest In Peace ( Pookie Wilson ) MVP
