Great video! Loved this point: Alaska is not going to ask for permission to be itself! The uniqueness of Alaska is both one of the most attractive qualities of the state (bold, wild, and like no place else in the US) but also a challenge for an outsider. I guess understanding this point and being willing and prepared to roll with whatever happens is a key to living there. Thanks, Jamin, good info!

Every time I've gone up to alaska for vacations, fuel is cheaper than in Washington. Food in the larger towns always seems to be about the same price that I'm used to buying as well. When I get out to the smaller, more remote community's is where I notice real expensive groceries.

Of the 100 women for every130 men, if half of them are married, that makes the ratio 50/80.

IF you need any professional services whatso ever its going to be orders of magnitude more expensive than most places in the lower 48. You will want to have ALOT of skills to do things on your own, not just "oh I can change my light bulb", I mean like hard core plumbing, electrical, building, then save your money for concrete/asphalt work and just get ready for the 5 figure bills. You need to be a dual income at around 200k to live a solid middle class life style here. Buying a car is also a nightmare, get ready for a take it or leave it (at an inflaced price) attitude at car lots, they have limited supply and they dont have to make a deal (same with real estate).
If an employer is trying to lure you up here make sure you account for these things in your salary negotiations. If they insist on low balling you walk away because if your not making good money up here its going to be a night mare. We have extreme weather and if anything goes awry and you dont have the funds to easily bail yourself out its not going to be fun.

wouldn't it be logical to at least have SOME refining of oil in the state? seems very inefficient
