    i've read the roy keane book and all keane wanted was proper and professional approach to the world cup finals. he stood up for what he belived in and in doing so sacrificed himself similar to the juventus game, hopefully his strong opinions have changed things for future ireland squads.

      zodiacza1 yeah Roy Keane was right about the fai but none of the other players left he left his country down and I remember a quote from Kenny Cunningham saying if you want to play for Ireland you should be prepared to crawl through glass Roy Keane has no class on the pitch and off the pitch he's just a thug and real supporters now that he called have settled the matter after the World Cup we could have won that World Cup that year he's a disgraced individual he has no class

    keano hit the nail on the head with this interview....maybe he went about it the wrong way but everything he's said is nailed on! Mick McCarthey probably felt threatened but Keane was right to challenge him...Keano was right...his attitude was that they were there to win and not make up numbers..whether thats unrealistic or not its the right way to think. Keane was just saying what all the players thought but were too spineless to say!

    What I really really like about Roy is that the media or someone will accuse Roy of something (complaining, being aggressive, etc). Then when he is questioned he gives a full account of what went on (pressuming he is telling the truth of course). For Mick to have sent him home, when there were no footballs present for training hahah.... and even my great idol Fergie - it was clear he was trying to edge Roy out because he was just dipping past his peak / coming into injuries. Yet Roy cut through the nonsense of claims that he was 'running' the changing room, as I have seen so many interviews of Fergie claiming that that was the plan anyway. He seems honest beyond belief, and his stories never change. How a club hasn't employed him as a coach lately ill never know. Perhaps they prefer the never ending dross of Pardew, Sam, Hughes, Mccarthy etc. YNWA Roy

    I'm guessing you don't like roy? Look, I wouldn't want to go for a drink with him. However I've watched him play the game and for me he's the best midfielder of his generation and part of that was his desire to win and he went to that world cup believing Ireland had the squad to win but they were again being handled like a pub team which he laid at the feet of McCarthy and his head just went. I think that team, with Keane, was the best to date, perfect mix of great youth and great experience.

    With Keane we wouldn't have hammered any team. Let's not forget we also had Kelly, Kilbane, Holland/Kinsella, Harte, Breen and a 33 year old Staunton as starting players. Finnan was a solid right back. For example, apart from the two Keanes and Duff, none of the rest would have probably got into Turkey's starting 11. Maybe Given but Rustu was top class too. They had good attacking full backs in Davala and Ergun. A midfield with Tugay, Emre and Basturk and Hakan Sukur up front. All good players.

    • @rampageclover9788
      @rampageclover9788 Рік тому

      Finnan, Harte, Given and the other Keane were on top form for Fulham, Newcastle and Leeds throughout that season. Definitely in the upper-tier and Roy knew what they could bring having squared off against them many times. I never rated Staunton. Like McCarthy, just another lump that needed Jack Charlton to hold his hand.....not world-class in the slightest. Being 33 wasn't the issue, Roy was 31 and still killing it at Old Trafford.

    The FAI and McCarthy ran the show at that time like a sunday league set up. Roy's sacrifice (That man wanted to play in the World Cup Finals) meant the FAI began to get their act together and Ireland go to euro 2012 under Trapattoni with a far more professional foundation. The difference between then and now is hugh and no small part of that is down to Keane and the stance he took, a stance taken because he cared and knew what was needed to win and not just turn up for a good auld time of it .

    @thomasoconnor07 I have read his book and he never did that, what is a matter of record is that Keane refused to play in some of the pre WC friendlies and did on several occasions say he was "injured" so as not to have to play in friendlies. Mick McCarthy took the team on to their greatest triumph never losing a game in open play.I wonder how Keane will explain to his grandchildren why he threatened to walk out on the Irish team 4 times before being fired.

  • @fincaman2
    @fincaman2 13 років тому +2

    I have read McCarthey's book and Keane's book and it is quite clear that Kean is in the wrong, If you swear at length and call your International manager foul names you go, simple, and when he did go the other players clapped. He should have had a go at the FAI not McCarthey. Keane says "We were preparing for the world cup finals" but doesn't say he refused to play in the friendlies leading up to them. The team went on to never loose a game in open play, they were knocked out on penalties.

    The Irish set up was a joke but he is a very fortunate person to play for his country. He should have bit his lip and stayed for the Irish people who were at home and more importantly the supporters who broke the bank to travel there. He thought of himself and not them. Some might say why should he. The answer to that is when you wear a green jersey your not just representing yourself. At the end of the day he was wrong and I'd say he knows that himself. If he had the time back he would do things differently.

    • @sonofalbasteelman3842
      @sonofalbasteelman3842 9 років тому +1

      Eamonn Buckley Who do you think you are? Roy Keane has never played for you. He never wore the green jersey, for what it's worth, so what are you complaining about? He was not representing himself: he was team captain, and as such was representing his team, who were all complaining about the lousy conditions. That is what he supposed to do. He was a better leader of men than, say, Enda Kenny. You know fuck-all about football, otherwise you would know there are serious issues here. That lousy training pitch could cause serious injury, and someone could be out of a match and even a career, without ever playing in a match. But you don't care if someone breaks a limb, representing the great YOU. You would just turn the other way. You are just a ne'erdowell who watches a match and thinks he knows more than the players and the coaching staff. Go on. Admit it. If your side loses a goal, you think it's the goalkeeper's fault, don't you? You think that a sweeper is a tool with bristles used by the ground staff, don't you? That's how ignorant you are. Roy Keane is a man. He stood up to idiots and sacrificed his own reputation for his team mates. He behaved like a captain, whereas you, Fuckley, would have lain on your back before McCarthy to have your tummy tickled. You make me sick.

    • @bookworm4314
      @bookworm4314 9 років тому +4

      You lost the argument by getting personal. Roy Keane has proven time and time again that he has no people skills. He should never have been made captain of Ireland no matter how good he was. He will always be remembered for leaving his country in it's time of need.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! And what did his country need? It's only a fucking game, dumbo. What a tiny little mind your've got. People walk out on their jobs every day. But you start talking about magic green jerseys, and times of need. It's got fuck-all to do with you. You're nobody. "If you get personal with me, you lose the argument." But the great Eamonn Fuckley can say what he likes about someone he doesn't even know. You still make me sick.

      I read Keanes autobiography and he said he didn't play the following week for his club. Not to mention Ireland's next opponents were Iran, a team Ireland could've (and did) handled without Keane or a few other of the squads top players. Tensions between Keane and McCarthy were already on display after Ireland beat Holland, Keane was pictured shaking McCarthy's hand quickly after the game but refusing to look at him whilst doing it. The truth is Keane knew McCarthy was messing about and wasn't taking the Manager job as seriously as he should've, his standards were very low. If we had have had a manager like Alex Ferguson we could've did much better in the World Cup.

      'Keane knew McCarthy was missing about' and 'his standards were very low'. Really? - he is one of only two ROI managers in history to qualify for the World Cup. His record there was arguably the best of the three appearances - certainly up there with the other two - with one win and three draws (and that included games against the eventual winners, Germany, and heavyweights Spain). And this was without his stand-out player, sulking on the eve of the tournament and questioning the manager's nationality and credibility and effectively ruling himself out of the tournament. Ferguson is a legend but no miracle worker - see his management of Scotland in 86. It was a strong Scotland squad but they didn't do great - (admittedly in a very tough group).

      Brazil won that world cup not Germany. (Germany were beaten in the final v Brazil), correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Ireland lose to Spain on penalties. Can hardly call that a draw. Come to think of it, weren't Ireland playing against 9 men in that game, one sent off and another injured.

    How do you get there? He left United by mutual consent, he didn't just abandon them. He quit Celtic because of injury (how do you make that immoral?) and he quit Sunderland because he didn't think he was right for them. This man is very straight forward, he expects a lot of himself and his players. Apart from some incidents on the pitch, I think he sets the standard of football professionalism.

    Whatever you think of Keane’s decision & I’m mixed on that it’s unacceptable to be unprepared for a World Cup & only go for a joke & a laugh, Ireland clearly lacked professionalism in those days, I’d have been fuming too tbh.

    As I said at the time to the people who backed Keane: If it was Clinton Morrison who kicked up a stink would you back him as well? He'd have been booted out the door so fast.
    Keane was out of order. He knew the FAI were useless - it was his duty to put up with the shit and play the matches. He let the team down, let Ireland down and let me down as I had shelled out 10 grand for Japan.
    Oh and I was at the match in 94 against Italy - Paul McGrath was our best player. Go watch the video.

Please use some intelligent logic, it is not a matter of fact that he used injury excuses like that, how is it fact? did his doctors admit to covering for him or something? and yes that was our greatest triumph at a world cup and note i say "our" greatest triumph. imagine if the team had prepared properly, the possibilties and that is FACT
