Thank you! You are the only Tokusatsu reviewer who actually watched the original Kamen Rider Black and added valid criticism to the show. I think the show is good but my biggest gripes were how battle hopper wasn’t even a character and Nobuhiko not having the Satan Saber.
I have some issues with the show but some of the main ones are; how kotaro’s whole reason for not wanting a creation king some because a spy that was playing but him and his brother-like friend convinced him that it was a good idea. I loved how when Nobuhiko was told the truth he had a conflict of interest and when he got the news of the bird kid’s death at the hands of those humans made him not only get his rider form but also instilled in him the need to remove humans. His first henshin scene was just epic
From my knowledge, I think Aoi became what basically a Hathaway Noa (it's a character from MS Gundam Hathaway's flash) She basically inherited Nobuhiko's ambition while also possessing Kotaro's will. And if she does bacome that in the sequel (Lets assume there will be sequel), oh boy. Let's just say, expect a firing squad.
Shunsuke didn't deserve two deaths. Poor kid, I quite liked the awkward Sparrow kid just wanting to help his friends and family. That second, permanent death saddened me a lot. RIP Shunsuke Komatsu, Sparrow Kaijin
How interesting would it have been if Black Sun and Shadowmoon exist because the Creation King intentionally sought out someone who could push this new lifeform of Kaijin into a new path. However, torn between wanting a fresh start and seeking vengeance for this new species, Creation King caused these two opposites to be made, leading to the conflict we would see in the modern day? It would give purpose to Creation King beyond just being the source for Kaijin and add some dimension of fate and control over one's destiny into the mix. Are Black Sun and Shadowmoon really in control of themselves? Are they even alive? Are they able to live their own lives? Or are they just pawns in a war being orchestrated by giants on a global scale?
These kinds of gritty Rider projects are exactly my jam and I'd be down to try out those Heaven jelly if they made them into a consumer snack (-_^ ) Black has one of the most iconic transformations and I like what they did here in Black Sun with how at first it is monstrous then through emotional breakthrough evolve into a hybrid classic format.
I disagree about Bilgenia; I think he was the worst character out of anyone, mainly because he kept switching sides so often and it was unclear what his actual motivations were. For instance, he was fiercly loyal to the kaijins and creation king in the beginning and hated the priests for bowing to Dounami's grandfather...only to willingly become the grandson's bitch years later while also still hating the priests for the same reason? Seems pretty hypocritical. Also, he decides to sacrifice himself for Aoi after gleefully killing her mother and turning her into a kaijin like a day earlier? This could've been okay for an arc if there was more time to explain his motivations, but there wasn't. It just seemed like he was whatever the plot needed him to be at the time. Also, I'm disappointed that it wasn't Shadow Moon that killed him. Seemed like they were setting that up, with him killing Yukari and all. Plus, it would've been a reference to his death in the series!
1. The rider forms are a result of a moment of focus righteous fury. 2. Aoi belt is likely a manifestation of the biomechanical implants that are embedded with a kaijin stone, similar to how many monster in different series actually have belt power sources similar to the riders. The stones themselves are shown to be generated by some synthesis process that concentrates animals dna into a crystal before being implanted. The kingstone are just special. 3. Heaven is basically Spam and Jello. 4. Kotaro would likely be resurrected as RX with both Stones in his belt, similar-ish/reference to how classic Kotaro's stone was split in two but was made to evolve due to exposure to unfiltered sunlight, causing his rebirth as Black RX. They will likely do something similar
I personally think Kotaro feels like a side character fit the story. He is washed out. His fight has ended back in the 70s when it all went wrong. The long yeas reduce him to become bitter and uncaring, and it is only because of Aoi that he decided to comeback to complete the unfinished business.
Yes there is some problem with the plot and jump scene. But i really like the bloody and dark concept in this series. After all kamen rider henshin this series is the only one that makes me goosebumps. Damn i love it so much
I can acknowledge whatever flaws there may be in this series (I wasn't a fan of the Aoi driver asspull either). Regardless, this show is near-masterpiece for me even then, so I put it at low-S on my end. [Otherwise, high B/Low A] (Do note, I haven't seen the original Black or any Showa series save for the 90s film trio, so I'm best regarded as a casual audience in this case). I just loved the cinematography, both practical and CG effects, suits (even the civilian/regular kaijin), fight choreography, and characters; even Kotaro. I didn't really mind that he didn't get as much screentime as other characters, which made his appearances that more awesome to me. That said, here were things I wish were covered: -Battlehopper and Roadsector's acquisitions -How Kotaro and Nobuhiko are even carrying the kingstones by hand even though the first scene of the series literally shows them implanted into their bodies? -Aoi's fricken driver. How did she get it? How does it work? What makes her such a unique kaijin that she suddenly gets one out of nowhere? I do hope at some point in the future, we can get an interview from the director or production crew regarding some lingering questions, or even some sort of novel to expand the story.
I found it really strange that black sun, shadow moon, bilgenia and the priests were all friends and part of a small hippie group before essentially becoming their show era selves. I know its not the same continuity as the original series, but it's still kind of surreal. Kind of like when they make "baby prequels" to established properties where all the characters somehow knew each other when they were younger despite the odds of that being highly improbable (examples include Baby Looney Tunes and X-men: Evolution).
"How did Aoi get a driver?", the same way Kataro and Nobuhiko got theirs through experimentation. Unless born a Kaijin, any human becoming a Kaijin most first be installed a driver for the transformation to be successful. The driver acts as a stabilizer between human and animal/insect DNA, and the kingstone is what powers the driver.
I genuinely enjoyed the show for the most part, but at least my biggest problem with it was all of the Gorgom party( except for bilgenia ) was super 1 note mustache twirling villains that made me groan more than hate them. And if I talk about Bilgenia his character arc in my opinion didn't have the full build up that I would like but the only solution is to stretch the story out for couple of more episodes.
The real villain of the story was just Dounami, and his Grandfather and how they just manipulated the Kaijin's. They werent really your typical villain, but your douche bag public figure with a shady side.

I enjoyed the series immensely and its themes, but I feel like the drivers could've been actual objects themselves, them just materializing felt a bit out of place with the series tone, I think. Like Black Sun's got even a little pressure clock, like old tech, Shadow Moon's looks more modern, and Aoi could've been handed hers. And maybe the Kingstones insertion would transform them into perfect form. That would require some workaround with the stones back and forth of course, but I would've liked it - just an afterthought
I liked "Kamen Rider black Sun", there are some things that needed work so I would also give it a B rating, but the plot it self was great, it just feel like they rushed it and realized that they lacked the budget to nail it. For Aoi's "Driver", all the "Kaijins have been implanted with there own Drivers, if you look at the flash back scenes on how they operated on them plus the documents that Aoi discovered. And that last scene where Vishnum was with the new Prime Minister was like a homage from the ending of the first "X-Men" movie.
I love this series, I dont think too much about what I watched, Aoi getting a driver is my only gripe just because it came out of nowhere and it didn't do anything for them
I see the complaints and frankly I don't care about the complaints. I didn't ask for This Nobhiko to have the Satan Saber like the original or anything else that people wanted in the original. I wanted a different show that could do two things. 1. To entertain me. 2. To make me want to watch the original show. And guess what, I want to the original show now. And yes I'll definitely watch this again.
This series is actually and mainly about shadow moon rider. Shadow moon is the main protagonist here, kotaro is just like side protagonist. And as the matter of budget ( in my personal opinion), let's talk bout the truth ; the kaijins' look just so resemble to cheap halloween costumes 😕😭
Were "Bilgenia," "Darom," "Bishum," and "Baraom," actually their real names, or just nicknames? The whole time I'm thinking to myself "Who would name their kids that???" Also, why were Kotaro and Nobuhiko called "Black Sun" and "Shadow Moon" in the first place? Were those titles their fathers gave them, or were they just code names while in Gorgom? Also, where did the kingstones actually come from??? Why are Kotaro and Nobuhiko the only kaijin with drivers (before Aoi)??? Are all kaijin cyborgs, or just those two??? It feels like the writers just threw in stuff from the original series without context and just went "Nah, it'll be fine!"
Personally, I think its masterpiece. As a fan og OG Black, I loved all the references in Black Sun. All the unexplained stuffs were kinda explained in the series, its just not spoon-fed to us which I kinda appreciated it. Personally, I loved the ending, it finished the main plot of the Creation King, Gorgom, Kotaro and Nobuhiko's arc. At least its not like Faiz where I felt the ending was kinda kinda abrupted with King Orphenoch stuff, loved Faiz btw lol. Also I hope they don't make a sequel, this series is a big budget project with high production quality and assembled of high caliber actors, pretty much its a standalone series. What do I hope tho is they'll make again a new series, maybe a new rider that have the same production value as Black Sun targeted for the older audiences. Solid high A for me
I think my main problem is that it's a Japanese show touting American politics and it just left me asking, "Why?" Other than that, it was a really good show.

@@clintonleonard5187 You must live under a rock because Japan does have issues with racism, specifically with being a homogenous society whose beauty standards are Euro-centric. Especially if you're half white, you're instantly at the top of the line to modelling careers and super stardom. They also have a historical issue specifically with Koreans and other ethnicities thrown into the mix due to their time as an Imperial power. It's completely disingenuous to just focus on the George Floyd reference when it's one out of plenty of other examples and using that one small reference of a fly to justify some "Oh no, Japan is criticizing America, I'm offended" sentiment. For the record, I thought the George Floyd reference was unnecessary too, but that still doesn't change how hyper focused people are about this being all based on American politics when they see just one reference and miss out on every other reference.
It's a very fair assessment of the series, but I want to be a bit harsher on the politics because I felt pretty strongly. The politics really can't be ignored because it is a central focus of the series, and I feel a lot of people are too afraid to speak out about it because they'd get crucified online. But you just can't equate Kaijin with persecuted groups when in series Kaijin literally go berserk killing people and eat jello paste made from people. While the message of "there can be good or bad people regardless of what they are" is fine, it doesn't quite align when Kaijus are manufactured weapons, with some being turned willingly. Moral ambiguity is fine, but not when you have two sides, with one being "Our Race should go extinct" or "We should become the master race". Maybe a different series could have handled this with more nuance, but as it stands linking it to real world politics seems in bad taste. While Aoi wants Coexistence, and the series implies that it's the best choice by having her as the main character, it comes at the idea of violent revolution or at least a few political lynchings being necessary for that to be achieved. I feel the series is incredibly tone deaf in these areas which is not helped by referencing George Floyd's death with a rubber suit monster standing in for him. It's a real shame because the series has genuinely good effects and directing for the most part which is harder to stomach because of the writing.
My problem with this series is there are too many pointless subplots and characters that just drag on. Not to mention things that just happen because plot calls for.
So there are things i like and don't like in this series. Still a 6/10 series, watch once than use as background noise Bad: rider suits and belts (they are awful in my opinion), some of the new characters, and lack of key plot details (example the belts) Good: the story, music, the kaijin suits, effects (practical and cgi), and the level of grit
Idk if I’m the only one who thinks so but I feel that killing the corrupt PM in black sun was a bit insensitive especially in light of recent events, the heroes could have detained the PM instead. If toei really wanted to kill the PM they could at least turn him into a monster to justify killing him. It would also be poetic seeing the one who abused kaijin turning into one himself
I believe a lot of this was filmed well before those events took place, and didn't want to re-write or change what they had. We'll likely find out once we get their insights in a couple of months.
Yeah I also felt Kotaro was kind of a side character in his own story. But I didn't hate it that much. It just made it a little hard for me to remember what his arc was and the key points where he changed considering he wasn't the main focus. I did like that the Creation King was a giant physical prop rather than CGI. Animatronics like this are a lost art in the big film and TV industry. It's a good thing Kamen Rider is still a niche because you know the anti-woke mob would be dogging on this film because it's a reboot that sidelines the main character to have a new female lead instead and is all political. I've seen Japanese fans point out that the prime minister is meant to be a parody of Shinzo Abe. If so then I gotta commend them so keeping that scene of him getting killed by Nick. Considering Shinzo Abe got assassinated this year. Gotta love how they also weren't even subtle with that cop having his knee on the Kaijin's throat by the end of the show.
I didn’t dislike the show, but I don’t like how they made the monsters be allegories for IRL minorities, it comes off as tasteless. Remember, our main character wants them all gone! I am struggling to understand what the makers of this wanted.
I did not care for this show at all and preferred watching rider seasons I hated over this. My reasoning is this show is kind of forgettable. Like maybe my memory is crap but when I finished the show by watching episode 7 to 10 in one go I could barely remember the show a few hours later when I was discussing it in a toku group I'm in. I walked into the tunnel feeling meh and left the tunnel feeling meh.
Thats the issue with them releasing this as a binge model show. Theres no time to let an episode sit on your mind for you to digest, because if you dont rush through it, you might miss out on the little conversation there was at the time.
My only nitpick is that they Should have named them kamen rider eclipse and blood moon there was no need for black name to be in this show aspect for having the century King but you could have named him something else too like emperor or something other then that I loved this series it was beautiful and cool and awesome

This series should be called Kamen Rider Aoi..the Aoi character it's so boring, If I Live in there, how she is portrayed as the leader of the rebellion didn't convince me enough to stay and want to do a combat training in the camp, it makes me feels like a suicide camp, how come those kids could trust their life to this amateur girl. Why she is so strong and suddenly has the driver? another Mary Sue character. But Kotaro teaches her how to fight right..? can you believe that? A single moment of basic self defense teaching could makes Aoi into a great fighter?c'mon man, if she was trained just like Beatrix Kiddo trained by Pai Mei in Kill Bill, maybe I can convince enough to believe that she is strong enough to kill the bad guy.. I really hate it, when a girl character didn't get enough proper treatment. The tragedy that's happening to her, actually could be a good potential Character development about how Kaijin and humans forged her from a cute little girl to be a scary weapon of Kaijin. The Kotaro and Nobuhiko relationship also didn't have a enough strong bonding to each other..they should make them really a best buddy, maybe they need to tell a little bit longer about their childhood, so the audience gets a strong impact when they decided to kill each other at the end of the series..even in the original series although we rarely saw Nobuhiko and Kotaro together when they're a child or teenage..but seeing how Kotaro still believe that Nobuhiko, still has a human side in him in every episode, makes us feels how painful for Kotaro at the end of the series. The transformation, why do the clothes sometimes still appear in some Kaijin but not in several Kaijin? how Kotaro and Nobuhiko transform? why does it look like a Venom transformation? If you read the original Manga of Black, you could see that Kotaro's transformation it's the same as Hulk, gradually changing from human skin to a grasshopper monster. Kotaro must open his clothes, you could see this version of "Henshin" in Shin Kamen Rider in the '90s. even the belt seems to appear just like venom.. is it a machine? that could grow? they put the belt since they're kids right? or not? The belt could bigger and bigger as they grow up? The costume is quite good, but I prefer Battaman from the original manga. The Motorcycle, the legendary Battle hopper and Road Sector, now it's just a motorcycle. what is the specialty of those bikes? we don't know.. who create them? we don't know..I hope I could see a great motorcycle stunt with those bikes, or have a psychological aspect, to scare the Kaijin, just like how the Batmobile in the Batman portrayed. Intimidating. Such a waste of potentially memorable moments in this reboot. Political agenda, for this one, let Hollywood experts handle this type of topic, we don't have to see a replicate of our life in movie or series right? movie is our escape from our world into a new realm, example: maybe this Black is in a post-apocalyptic world, or else, okay I get it,this is a political satyr, but please don't put much on it, we already see a lot of political things in the news.. Just focus on the main character's development and story, and please make it more logical since they always said that this reboot is for adults. Some of the best Gorgom higher-ups didn't get the best fight with Kotaro, and the Creation King is loose the scary, mythical aspect of him. I prefer Creation King in the original series. Mysterious, you don't have to explain many things about him, just like Shocker, mysterious, invisible, and could resurrect any time as long crime still exists. But I think (it's just my theory) they want to make it parallel to the original Crime syndicate character that appear in 1938, the origin of Shocker (Nazi, World war 2, Human Experimental, etc. I think they give us a hint that Shocker is exist and this will lead us to SHin Kamen rider next year. You could see a kid holding a Shocker combatant toy in the Black Sun series.
I agree on the training montage of 1 30 minute session with her being how she kills him at the end being ridiculously dumb. All the non-explainers regarding her abilities was eh. Thats why I feel if they do a version of RX, it'll be all about Aoi and maybe Nick, since todays modern take on everything is: lets let nostalgia die and just hand the torch over. I agree with a lot of your takes and viewpoints, however I was trying to keep a lot of comparisons with the original to a minimum, or else I would've given this a much lower rating.
@@ZEOAGITO yeah, in the end..this is just a series when TOEI have fun with their IP on 50 anniversaries of Kamen Rider, it must be treated as a reimagining, but they also have the guts to make a series that has a fan base around the world since the '80s and 90's. either it's daring enough or stupid enough to butcher a strong character lead in their series, the legendary Kotaro Minami, you know what, even when you said that name, lot's of images of Kurata Tetsuo appear in our mind, the jacket, the glove, the hair cut, it's too strong, I believe that one day Toei gonna remake this series, but the fact that they need a decade for them to make a Black remake its proof that this series it's not easy, it already has a strong impact to fans and to Kamen Rider franchise itself, we see Ichigo Nigo remake AGAIN, but Kamen Rider Black? it's not that easy, so yeah it's really daring moves from Toei to do a reboot or whatever they called..the new story has too many characters, a plot etc..The story has similarity to Logan, but what makes Logan successful is they focus only on a small group of X-Men, even though it is more personal to Logan's relationship between him and X-23, but in Black Sun, the ark story between Kotaro and Nobuhiko become less and more to Aoi and Kotaro which also is not strong enough. So why do we care about the new character then?

A blunt show is ok but its handled like where the social issues is like watching heff bezos sees these social issues though. Hmmmm hmmm these are relevant let's put these on. Mmm freedom fighters mmmm. I kinda disagree with the nick part because he is black and basically went transracial and then he is on the side of the guy who wants to eliminate the birth of new kaijins which is through the creation king. It's a bit of a story contradiction but I guess it's OK when nick is happy. Episode 9 and 10 ruined my view of the show when aoi essentially creates child soldier and they dragged the speech for too long. You are a little bit more generous than I am though. I would give it a grade lower for the beautiful visual effects even though like you said it misses somethings. dounami head was little bit jello and the sparrow mask is too much like a mask. And the same five tunes is really grating. They should of used the song for the opening instead of the ending so I wouldn't be like wanting to skip it asap
A lot of the Kaijin suits were terrible, since it did feel very cheap at times. And yes, the last set of episodes are what ultimately makes this show not go well. I still enjoyed some moments, especially since its relying on the binge model, most episodes end in a way that make you almost want to see the next episode right after but yeah, they flubbed the ending.

Don't let your heart down. Battle hopper is by default not a character. It was made into a character so that the story became children friendly.

[Otherwise, high B/Low A] (Do note, I haven't seen the original Black or any Showa series save for the 90s film trio, so I'm best regarded as a casual audience in this case).
I just loved the cinematography, both practical and CG effects, suits (even the civilian/regular kaijin), fight choreography, and characters; even Kotaro. I didn't really mind that he didn't get as much screentime as other characters, which made his appearances that more awesome to me.
That said, here were things I wish were covered:
-Battlehopper and Roadsector's acquisitions
-How Kotaro and Nobuhiko are even carrying the kingstones by hand even though the first scene of the series literally shows them implanted into their bodies?
-Aoi's fricken driver. How did she get it? How does it work? What makes her such a unique kaijin that she suddenly gets one out of nowhere?
I do hope at some point in the future, we can get an interview from the director or production crew regarding some lingering questions, or even some sort of novel to expand the story.
But damn, BLACK SUN gone hard and it hits different.
That henshinn really gave me goosebumps.
I found it really strange that black sun, shadow moon, bilgenia and the priests were all friends and part of a small hippie group before essentially becoming their show era selves. I know its not the same continuity as the original series, but it's still kind of surreal. Kind of like when they make "baby prequels" to established properties where all the characters somehow knew each other when they were younger despite the odds of that being highly improbable (examples include Baby Looney Tunes and X-men: Evolution).
I just finished the show and pretty much agree with everything you said
"How did Aoi get a driver?", the same way Kataro and Nobuhiko got theirs through experimentation. Unless born a Kaijin, any human becoming a Kaijin most first be installed a driver for the transformation to be successful. The driver acts as a stabilizer between human and animal/insect DNA, and the kingstone is what powers the driver.
I genuinely enjoyed the show for the most part, but at least my biggest problem with it was all of the Gorgom party( except for bilgenia ) was super 1 note mustache twirling villains that made me groan more than hate them. And if I talk about Bilgenia his character arc in my opinion didn't have the full build up that I would like but the only solution is to stretch the story out for couple of more episodes.
The real villain of the story was just Dounami, and his Grandfather and how they just manipulated the Kaijin's. They werent really your typical villain, but your douche bag public figure with a shady side.

I enjoyed the series immensely and its themes, but I feel like the drivers could've been actual objects themselves, them just materializing felt a bit out of place with the series tone, I think. Like Black Sun's got even a little pressure clock, like old tech, Shadow Moon's looks more modern, and Aoi could've been handed hers. And maybe the Kingstones insertion would transform them into perfect form. That would require some workaround with the stones back and forth of course, but I would've liked it - just an afterthought
And Bilgenia's Kaijin form just looked bad 😝
If they make a sequel, make Aoi RX since she did an RX henshin.

I liked "Kamen Rider black Sun", there are some things that needed work so I would also give it a B rating, but the plot it self was great, it just feel like they rushed it and realized that they lacked the budget to nail it. For Aoi's "Driver", all the "Kaijins have been implanted with there own Drivers, if you look at the flash back scenes on how they operated on them plus the documents that Aoi discovered. And that last scene where Vishnum was with the new Prime Minister was like a homage from the ending of the first "X-Men" movie.

I see the complaints and frankly I don't care about the complaints. I didn't ask for This Nobhiko to have the Satan Saber like the original or anything else that people wanted in the original. I wanted a different show that could do two things. 1. To entertain me. 2. To make me want to watch the original show. And guess what, I want to the original show now. And yes I'll definitely watch this again.

It feels like the writers just threw in stuff from the original series without context and just went "Nah, it'll be fine!"

Personally, I think its masterpiece. As a fan og OG Black, I loved all the references in Black Sun. All the unexplained stuffs were kinda explained in the series, its just not spoon-fed to us which I kinda appreciated it. Personally, I loved the ending, it finished the main plot of the Creation King, Gorgom, Kotaro and Nobuhiko's arc. At least its not like Faiz where I felt the ending was kinda kinda abrupted with King Orphenoch stuff, loved Faiz btw lol. Also I hope they don't make a sequel, this series is a big budget project with high production quality and assembled of high caliber actors, pretty much its a standalone series. What do I hope tho is they'll make again a new series, maybe a new rider that have the same production value as Black Sun targeted for the older audiences. Solid high A for me

@@clintonleonard5187 You must live under a rock because Japan does have issues with racism, specifically with being a homogenous society whose beauty standards are Euro-centric. Especially if you're half white, you're instantly at the top of the line to modelling careers and super stardom. They also have a historical issue specifically with Koreans and other ethnicities thrown into the mix due to their time as an Imperial power. It's completely disingenuous to just focus on the George Floyd reference when it's one out of plenty of other examples and using that one small reference of a fly to justify some "Oh no, Japan is criticizing America, I'm offended" sentiment. For the record, I thought the George Floyd reference was unnecessary too, but that still doesn't change how hyper focused people are about this being all based on American politics when they see just one reference and miss out on every other reference.
It's a very fair assessment of the series, but I want to be a bit harsher on the politics because I felt pretty strongly.
The politics really can't be ignored because it is a central focus of the series, and I feel a lot of people are too afraid to speak out about it because they'd get crucified online. But you just can't equate Kaijin with persecuted groups when in series Kaijin literally go berserk killing people and eat jello paste made from people. While the message of "there can be good or bad people regardless of what they are" is fine, it doesn't quite align when Kaijus are manufactured weapons, with some being turned willingly.
Moral ambiguity is fine, but not when you have two sides, with one being "Our Race should go extinct" or "We should become the master race". Maybe a different series could have handled this with more nuance, but as it stands linking it to real world politics seems in bad taste. While Aoi wants Coexistence, and the series implies that it's the best choice by having her as the main character, it comes at the idea of violent revolution or at least a few political lynchings being necessary for that to be achieved.
I feel the series is incredibly tone deaf in these areas which is not helped by referencing George Floyd's death with a rubber suit monster standing in for him.
It's a real shame because the series has genuinely good effects and directing for the most part which is harder to stomach because of the writing.
My problem with this series is there are too many pointless subplots and characters that just drag on. Not to mention things that just happen because plot calls for.
So there are things i like and don't like in this series. Still a 6/10 series, watch once than use as background noise
Bad: rider suits and belts (they are awful in my opinion), some of the new characters, and lack of key plot details (example the belts)
Good: the story, music, the kaijin suits, effects (practical and cgi), and the level of grit

Idk if I’m the only one who thinks so but I feel that killing the corrupt PM in black sun was a bit insensitive especially in light of recent events, the heroes could have detained the PM instead. If toei really wanted to kill the PM they could at least turn him into a monster to justify killing him. It would also be poetic seeing the one who abused kaijin turning into one himself
I believe a lot of this was filmed well before those events took place, and didn't want to re-write or change what they had. We'll likely find out once we get their insights in a couple of months.
Yeah I also felt Kotaro was kind of a side character in his own story. But I didn't hate it that much. It just made it a little hard for me to remember what his arc was and the key points where he changed considering he wasn't the main focus. I did like that the Creation King was a giant physical prop rather than CGI. Animatronics like this are a lost art in the big film and TV industry.
It's a good thing Kamen Rider is still a niche because you know the anti-woke mob would be dogging on this film because it's a reboot that sidelines the main character to have a new female lead instead and is all political.
I've seen Japanese fans point out that the prime minister is meant to be a parody of Shinzo Abe. If so then I gotta commend them so keeping that scene of him getting killed by Nick. Considering Shinzo Abe got assassinated this year. Gotta love how they also weren't even subtle with that cop having his knee on the Kaijin's throat by the end of the show.

I didn’t dislike the show, but I don’t like how they made the monsters be allegories for IRL minorities, it comes off as tasteless. Remember, our main character wants them all gone! I am struggling to understand what the makers of this wanted.
I did not care for this show at all and preferred watching rider seasons I hated over this. My reasoning is this show is kind of forgettable. Like maybe my memory is crap but when I finished the show by watching episode 7 to 10 in one go I could barely remember the show a few hours later when I was discussing it in a toku group I'm in. I walked into the tunnel feeling meh and left the tunnel feeling meh.
Thats the issue with them releasing this as a binge model show. Theres no time to let an episode sit on your mind for you to digest, because if you dont rush through it, you might miss out on the little conversation there was at the time.

This series should be called Kamen Rider Aoi..the Aoi character it's so boring, If I Live in there, how she is portrayed as the leader of the rebellion didn't convince me enough to stay and want to do a combat training in the camp, it makes me feels like a suicide camp, how come those kids could trust their life to this amateur girl. Why she is so strong and suddenly has the driver? another Mary Sue character. But Kotaro teaches her how to fight right..? can you believe that? A single moment of basic self defense teaching could makes Aoi into a great fighter?c'mon man, if she was trained just like Beatrix Kiddo trained by Pai Mei in Kill Bill, maybe I can convince enough to believe that she is strong enough to kill the bad guy.. I really hate it, when a girl character didn't get enough proper treatment. The tragedy that's happening to her, actually could be a good potential Character development about how Kaijin and humans forged her from a cute little girl to be a scary weapon of Kaijin.
The Kotaro and Nobuhiko relationship also didn't have a enough strong bonding to each other..they should make them really a best buddy, maybe they need to tell a little bit longer about their childhood, so the audience gets a strong impact when they decided to kill each other at the end of the series..even in the original series although we rarely saw Nobuhiko and Kotaro together when they're a child or teenage..but seeing how Kotaro still believe that Nobuhiko, still has a human side in him in every episode, makes us feels how painful for Kotaro at the end of the series.
The transformation, why do the clothes sometimes still appear in some Kaijin but not in several Kaijin? how Kotaro and Nobuhiko transform? why does it look like a Venom transformation? If you read the original Manga of Black, you could see that Kotaro's transformation it's the same as Hulk, gradually changing from human skin to a grasshopper monster. Kotaro must open his clothes, you could see this version of "Henshin" in Shin Kamen Rider in the '90s. even the belt seems to appear just like venom.. is it a machine? that could grow? they put the belt since they're kids right? or not? The belt could bigger and bigger as they grow up? The costume is quite good, but I prefer Battaman from the original manga.
The Motorcycle, the legendary Battle hopper and Road Sector, now it's just a motorcycle. what is the specialty of those bikes? we don't know.. who create them? we don't know..I hope I could see a great motorcycle stunt with those bikes, or have a psychological aspect, to scare the Kaijin, just like how the Batmobile in the Batman portrayed. Intimidating. Such a waste of potentially memorable moments in this reboot.
Political agenda, for this one, let Hollywood experts handle this type of topic, we don't have to see a replicate of our life in movie or series right? movie is our escape from our world into a new realm, example: maybe this Black is in a post-apocalyptic world, or else, okay I get it,this is a political satyr, but please don't put much on it, we already see a lot of political things in the news.. Just focus on the main character's development and story, and please make it more logical since they always said that this reboot is for adults.
Some of the best Gorgom higher-ups didn't get the best fight with Kotaro, and the Creation King is loose the scary, mythical aspect of him. I prefer Creation King in the original series. Mysterious, you don't have to explain many things about him, just like Shocker, mysterious, invisible, and could resurrect any time as long crime still exists. But I think (it's just my theory) they want to make it parallel to the original Crime syndicate character that appear in 1938, the origin of Shocker (Nazi, World war 2, Human Experimental, etc. I think they give us a hint that Shocker is exist and this will lead us to SHin Kamen rider next year. You could see a kid holding a Shocker combatant toy in the Black Sun series.
I agree on the training montage of 1 30 minute session with her being how she kills him at the end being ridiculously dumb. All the non-explainers regarding her abilities was eh. Thats why I feel if they do a version of RX, it'll be all about Aoi and maybe Nick, since todays modern take on everything is: lets let nostalgia die and just hand the torch over.
I agree with a lot of your takes and viewpoints, however I was trying to keep a lot of comparisons with the original to a minimum, or else I would've given this a much lower rating.
@@ZEOAGITO yeah, in the end..this is just a series when TOEI have fun with their IP on 50 anniversaries of Kamen Rider, it must be treated as a reimagining, but they also have the guts to make a series that has a fan base around the world since the '80s and 90's. either it's daring enough or stupid enough to butcher a strong character lead in their series, the legendary Kotaro Minami, you know what, even when you said that name, lot's of images of Kurata Tetsuo appear in our mind, the jacket, the glove, the hair cut, it's too strong, I believe that one day Toei gonna remake this series, but the fact that they need a decade for them to make a Black remake its proof that this series it's not easy, it already has a strong impact to fans and to Kamen Rider franchise itself, we see Ichigo Nigo remake AGAIN, but Kamen Rider Black? it's not that easy, so yeah it's really daring moves from Toei to do a reboot or whatever they called..the new story has too many characters, a plot etc..The story has similarity to Logan, but what makes Logan successful is they focus only on a small group of X-Men, even though it is more personal to Logan's relationship between him and X-23, but in Black Sun, the ark story between Kotaro and Nobuhiko become less and more to Aoi and Kotaro which also is not strong enough. So why do we care about the new character then?
From my knowledge, I think Aoi became what basically a Hathaway Noa (it's a character from MS Gundam Hathaway's flash)
She basically inherited Nobuhiko's ambition while also possessing Kotaro's will.
And if she does bacome that in the sequel (Lets assume there will be sequel), oh boy. Let's just say, expect a firing squad.

A blunt show is ok but its handled like where the social issues is like watching heff bezos sees these social issues though. Hmmmm hmmm these are relevant let's put these on. Mmm freedom fighters mmmm. I kinda disagree with the nick part because he is black and basically went transracial and then he is on the side of the guy who wants to eliminate the birth of new kaijins which is through the creation king. It's a bit of a story contradiction but I guess it's OK when nick is happy. Episode 9 and 10 ruined my view of the show when aoi essentially creates child soldier and they dragged the speech for too long.
You are a little bit more generous than I am though. I would give it a grade lower for the beautiful visual effects even though like you said it misses somethings. dounami head was little bit jello and the sparrow mask is too much like a mask. And the same five tunes is really grating. They should of used the song for the opening instead of the ending so I wouldn't be like wanting to skip it asap
A lot of the Kaijin suits were terrible, since it did feel very cheap at times. And yes, the last set of episodes are what ultimately makes this show not go well. I still enjoyed some moments, especially since its relying on the binge model, most episodes end in a way that make you almost want to see the next episode right after but yeah, they flubbed the ending.
Let's hope there's no masked rider black sun rx
