As long as there's due process in getting that data, I don't see the problem for 99.99% of people. It's nice having an email where if you have an issue with your account, you can actually get in contact with a real human that has the power to help. With all other the big name email companies, you're lucky if you can solve your problem with whatever automatic help system they have, let alone ever talk to a human. So many things are locked behind email, losing access to it can be a nightmare. @@jordana.f.4422

@@DiversionGI'm saying that they can't make the argument that the software subsidizes the hardware. Those companies that sell you rock bottom TVs that come with a bunch of baked in ads can only get away with the nearly free hardware, because they'll get recurring revenue. But Apple obviously doesn't do that, so no argument for "oh we need to keep control of the device so that we don't lose out on revenue from a subsidized product" is completely null. They have no logical argument for keeping control.

Well... I was a Sr Software engineer at Apple in (ahem) 1986. Broke away 2 years later to become an independent developer. At the time Apple was simply the best solution in the world. Jump forward to now (early 2024) and I have decided to dump Apple once and for all. I ABSOLUTELY HATE APPLE. They moved from being an innovating force to a greedy force. Well, for some time now... but their greed is absurd. A new operating system every two years which obsoletes apps you have to buy all over again... a totally invasive system, much like Google to entrap both users and developers. So... I've been 'practicing' on Linux Mint and now think I have a reasonable development environment. After 38 years (!!!) of Mac I'm struggling a tiny bit moving to linux but linux has come a LONG way in just the last decade. Every dog has their day and Apple's day is over. While I confess I don't own any Apple device nor do I plan on ever doing so, I strongly feel that Apple's new app development polices in the EU will turn out to be a very bad thing that may slap them in the face. How Apple has chosen to force app developers to pay them additional an fee directly to them on top of what they pay to develop apps on other app stores is wrong. This new form of monopoly may spell certain doom for Apple as app developers will probably start turning away from Apple's app store and move towards other app stores such as Google's and/or FOSS, especially those small app development teams that can't pay Apple's additional fees. The ramifications of Apple's most recent app policy changes in the EU might in fact cause obsolete Apple app versions not to get updated if this comes to pass.

13:46 I don't understand what those percentages means. If we'll consider that currently they have a separate process that implements communication, thenswitching to kernel we can get from 4 context switches (user-kernel-user-kernel-user) down to 2 (user-kernel-user). Even if we'll consider that new synchronization will help to put process to sleep and awake other, we can count it as 1 context switch per process (user1-kernel-user2). I.e. 2x-4x less CPU work to flip contexts.
Are those referring to real time (including waiting), or it is indicating real overhead. If it includes waiting time, then I would expect that processes that serve that functionality now might just require bumping priorities for scheduler to achieve similar effect.

    Hey Nick,
Great video! The title definitely caught my eye ha ha!
To be honest Apple's changes are obviously anti-competitive, but they do come across as them being ultra petty on their part because they are doing this reluctantly. I am all for being able to use Firefox and Chrome using their respective web engines rather than WebKit, if I wanted to use WebKit, what's the point of using Chrome/Firefox over vanilla Safari? The thing that is even more infurtiating is that this option is only available on iPhone, not on iPad - although I don't live in the EU, that is very petty on the part of Apple.
On the outside looking in maybe some of the EU policies aren't exactly favourable towards regular users - not sure if EU is at fault for websites prompting visitors to explicitly accept cookies are a result of EU policies, but at least in this case I was looking forward to side loading apps. If there is one thing that I like about Android over iOS is that you can install any app that you would like.
It's an overall disappointment since I like using Apple's hardware. I do find interesting how some of these companies, like Epic, have a problem with Apple charging that commission, but aren't going after Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo for doing the same thing on their platforms.

The Wayland icon thing is actually hilarious. We just recently heard them railing against the repo that aims to fix the basic features missing from Wayland. Apparently they had all been left out for security reasons and couldn't be implemented. Then a few weeks later suddenly icons are possible anyway? No doubt we will see more of those repo features being snuck in through the backdoor in coming weeks and months. The devs are just too arrogant to admit they were wrong, or to even just acquiesce to the users' requests.

It provides such a cohesive experience unparalleled in any other ecosystem. You have to use it know (Look, I used to use arch as my main machine and lineage os custom rom so I've been on both sides).
No one is forcing anyone to buy apple products, people buy it because they like it?
And more importantly, if they don't like the experience or the walled garden then they're free to use other phones in the market?
Now, are some of their policies and decisions stupid? sure they are. Like any other giant company.

the icon thing is not because people don't want to work together the proposed way could break a lot of wayland & the guy who proposed it can be very hostile

Discussion, debate, and people pointing out flaws is how a good protocol is achieved. You can't dismiss these things broadly as just meaningless "people can't agree" nonsense.

I kind of like the per-install fee for companies like Facebook, Netflix, Microsoft, and the like. Thinking back on apps like Apollo though, I don't feel like it's fair to have small-scale developers pay when people install apps. Does it apply when the app doesn't cost anything too?

I am actually happy that the Ayaneo is shipping with Windows, otherwise the lackluster performance would have been blamed on Gnu/Linux.

RE: AYANEO NEXT LITE shipping with Windows 11. My take is that if it ships with Windows 11 out of the box, they calculate that they will sell more units. Linux users are savvy enough to install HoloISO, after all they do it much of the time installing Linux on Laptops and PCs that ship with Windows by default. Whereas a general Windows user (If AYANEO NEXT LITE shipped with HoloISO) would not likely buy the device if they had to go through the trouble to install Windows after purchase.

At first glance at Apple's system and it almost seems reasonable
But developers still needing an Apple developer account, Apple still vetting app stores? Isn't the point of side loading to get rid of that?

Wild that appimage devs have any input on wayland development considering that appimages only run on wayland via xwayland and the lead dev has rejected patches to improve the situation.

The wayland protocol issue is mainly due to Gnome. Anything which gives users or app developers more control is to be rejected with extreme prejudice.
