Dude, this has been my favorite topic, and a source of many questions and personal study on the magic systems in Conan. I’ve always wanted to look at things like how humans interact with magic in Conan like the differences between the magic of pelias vs the magic of Tsotha-lanti. In the story the scarlet citadel, tsotha is constantly using objects to perform his minor feats. He never seems to do anything of his own power or incantation. For example, tsotha uses things like the ring steeped in lotus juice, the dust found in the Stygian tomb, and the exploding orbs. Pelias on the other hand doesn’t use any objects to perform his magic. He raises shuggeli with just words, summons the sky beast with words and hand movements, and transforms into the eagle. Pelias does use the palanter, or “crystal ball”, but he insinuated that it’s not necessary for him to do so except that he doesn’t have enough time for greater Magics. So I’ve always wondered, how does magic work in this world? Even people like Thoth-Amon with the ring of set, he needed that for his power, yet it almost seemed like to be a sorcerer in Conan, the poisons and chemical or alchemical sciences are categoried as a sort of magic or subset of sorcery. It’s so intriguing.
I believe he says in another video, that the top most powerful magic users of this setting can only be as powerful as Doctor Strange. (Only, is a silly word to use, but I'm trying to explain the greatest extent of power).
This comment is the reason I'm writing the next episode on Alchemy and Mummery - thank you for this as I would have over looked it in the series otherwise!
4:38 makes me not want to kill wolves in Exiles anymore. I never knew they had such dumb, cute little smiles on their faces when they're just chilling and idling.

This is most definitely my favorite subject in Conan. I think Hyperborea has Witch Kings and Witch Queens who rule the land. Might be the only northern territory in Hyborea that venerates magic. I love the idea of Elder Magic, and I'm taking inspiration from these examples.
Groovy Trinity of Sorcery from the Primal World of Conan! F*** I needed this so much! I'm lifting this wholesale. This is the best loose rules application to a soft magic system that I've eve seen! It fits my setting and private rules so well. Thank you! May you be blessed by Mitra oh, Deathslayer.
In Conan Exiles, most of my characters were witches (necromancy, shamanism, mesmerism, enchanting and a bit of dream magic, all blent together into sort of "afterlife-tending witch") worshipping primarily mostly Yog and Derketo. I used to create them as Hyborians (Bossonians to be specific), but now I think I should perhaps try Hyrkanian (some sort of proto-Scythians or Cumans), as there, followers of supernatural arts might have greater opportunities. Although, witch coming from Hyborian culture might have more interesting backstory as being outcast in her own home and eventually forced to flee.
I loved all the witty side commentary on the whole explanation sprinkled throughout... I'd love to see more of these. Hope you're doing well and feeling better.
Question: in many stories, the use and study of potions, poisons, and chemicals all seem to be typical studies of the wizards and sorcerers of Conan. Now is that because those things are considered magic or necessary for magic? Or is that a subset of studies for wizards and sorcerers but not necessarily tied to magic?
I think it's that potions and chemicals are good aids if you are a magician. Those who come from a scholarly background might have picked up chemistry and herbalism in their studies, while those who are more like shamans or witches can have it as a part of their tradition. I am sure many in the Hyborian age considers medicine or chemicals to be magical, because they don't understand it. An actual Sorcerer would of course know it's not magic, but useful skills to have. If you can scare the shit out of people without even using your magic (which can be tasking) the better.

Thanks! Happy to have you back too! I already released part 2 of this series as well if your interested! It’s about con-artists pretending to be magic!
This has to be the simplest and most nuanced magic system I have ever come across. It the idea of Totem, Skill, and Patron as general approaches to “opening the door”; knock, unlock, or hire expensive help. The beauty is it almost explains every setting from any form of media. However, I would like to add a 4th option not covered due to it not really existing in Conan’s world. You are the Door. You can access magic because it is part of your nature. It can even be broken down into four or five Archetypes: Monarch, Vezir, Champion, Craftsman, and Trickster. This - Monarch: master and absolute ruler of their sphere of influence whether that be a realm/region or specialty. LOTR Galadriel and Melkor, and Hans Christian Andersen’s Ice Queen are notable examples. An undead king whose lands are dead and rotting while raising his dead subjects from the grave would be a Monarch archetype. -Vezir: similar to Monarchs but limited in power and influence as well as lacking dominion over a region. This is pretty much Gandalf and some depictions of Merlin. Arguably, Harry Potter is this with a mixture of Totem (Wands) and Skill (learning to use it) thrown for good measure. - Champion is pretty much being super human; being stronger, faster, more durable than a normal human. Maybe throw in an elemental theme or a healing factor. DC’s the Flash and Wonder Woman, Marvel’s Thor the Champion archetypes as well as Kratos. - Craftsman are what it says on the tin, they make inherently magical stuff. These artifacts can be anywhere from beneficial and to outright malicious. The Dwarves from Norse Mythology and Hephaestus spring to mind as the Craftsman archetype. - And the there is the Trickster Archetype. The lovable rogue, prankster, troublemaker, charlatan, and problem solver. They are the shapeshifters and illusionists, magicians using cunning and resourcefulness Definitely Loki, and GOW Atreus are Trickster Archetype. This can even be mixed and matched. Sauron starts off as Vezir and becomes a Monarch and Craftsman, minoring in Champion. Jarith from the Labyrinth is a Monarch and Trickster. Sun Wukong (Monkey King) is Champion and Trickster.
Technically speaking knocking door and paying other to break door is relying on others Were as skill magic is relying on your self's The super human is technically power of yourself I would add telekinesis
One thing I've always kind of liked in Conan when it comes to magic is that it's less a gamified magic system and it's more based on the beliefs of the people practicing it in that there are a few ways that they use it they are kind of sort of similar to unrelated disciplines but by and large are so vastly different that if they start explaining how they do it you will not confuse the two. And from that the weird overlap that happens to where one sorcerer might be able to create flames that spray from his right hand meanwhile the other one that he is fighting is deconstructing things down into their base elements (think less periodic table and more earth, fire, wind, water) to create a gout of fire that is reaching towards his enemy (meanwhile they're both fighting because ideologically and from the perspective of their religions they are smiting the wicked). Meanwhile the townspeople that they are fighting over the metaphorical and possibly the literal soul of in this sorcerer duel are equally horrified and bewildered by what both of them are pulling and planning on killing whoever wins out of fear
27:30 I have the funny image of a looney toons esque sign being placed on both sides of the bridge that read: Warning Temporary Bridge will vanish soon. With everyone just ignoring it because they don't believe in magic, and surely this well constructed bridge won't vanish.
Have you ever looked into the Mythras ttrpg? It's got a lot of flexible magic systems to tailor to each campaign's setting, among other things, and the game has an implied sword and sorcery setting. It seems like it could mesh well with your capacity for worldbuilding.
I saw the video! And now I have another question... If dream magic is so OP, then why does it fall into the category of "gently knocking on the door and asking permission to come in"? 🤔
I just had this idea come to mind, but what if the Frost Giant God Ymir, was slain by the Aesir and Vanir making the first gods with his blood such as Odin, and his brothers Vili and Vé seeing The Aesir and Vanir would be granted god like powers and would eventually quarrel over the frost giants blood leading to the first war between the Aesir and Vanir gods seeing how this happens in Norse mythology it's entirely possible.
Do you think the Picts would ever practice other forms of magic, like necromancy, or ecomancy, or would they just shun everything that wasn't Jhebbal Sag patron heraldry or shamanism?
