You mentioned that frost giants appear only to people who have experienced or are currently undergoing a near death experience, and if memory serves in your video about sorcery you mentioned necromancers can channel ice from the land of the dead, so perhaps the reason these spirit giants appear only to the dying is because they inhabit the same frosty realm of death? The afterlife of the unworthy in norse mythology is a frozen wasteland and conan doesn't seem to be a stranger to reimagining and melding concepts from myth, so perhaps the realm of the frost giants and by consequence Ymir is one such melding of Helheim and Valhalla.
In Dante's Inferno one level of hell houses the frozen lake Cocytus a place for traitors. Though the name itself is from Greek mythology and it refers to an underworld river in Hades(the realm). Not sure if it was frozen or even cold in the Greek origins though.
If you look at some of the experts in Norse mythology, it's actually plausible that the older concept of Valhalla was originally located in Niflheim alongside Helheim, as all souls had to first traverse the world of mists to be judged of which afterlife they'd end up in.
When you consider the aspect of near death or post death encounters with Frost Giants, Atali might not be an outright temptress, but a straight up psychopomp.
Conan Exiles was my first step into the Conan-verse and I knew the Frost Giants were special when I found out the swirling portal in their fortress was barely understood and actually scared the Giant Kings. Thank you for the informative and spectacularly crafted video! I can always count on your content to be rewarding and worth the wait.
the theories about Odin being a bronze age King from the Black Sea region who ended up being worshipped as a God in proto-Norse and Germanic culture fits well with the Aesir and Vanir being actual tribes of people.
It also fits with the race of giants being a third tribe too. Giants being the first group into a region and being taken over/killed/exiled by the Æsir who then repelled the Vanir who then married into the Æsir to avoid being replaced like the giants were. I’m not doing the theory justice but that’s pretty much it in a nutshell. Crecganford on UA-cam has a pretty compelling video about it. It’s very #indoeuropean 😊 ☕️ 🫖
Which is funny because it was never suposed to be a conan story. It's like Phoenix on the sword in that Howard rewrote an existing story d4aft that never sold as a conan story latter on.
bro, u gotta make a video on the Elric verse and the other works of Michael Moorcock, I love the subversion of the champions of the balance of being a chosen one that is way more a curse than any type of privilege, truly a Grimdark franchise.
Loved this video, but really curious about the theory regarding Atali being an alternate-universe bride of Conan. Never heard that one before, it sounds weird and interesting! Definitely gonna have to read the Frost Giant's Daughter soon, this is definitely one of the most fascinating videos you've done in awhile Grimdark! So glad to see you come back to Conan content!
Thank you for your work. The last year I have watched, with rapt interest, your content as it both dissects and inspires. Your introspection has been a guide in my life path and my written work. I recently got engaged to an amazing and astounding partner that encourages me to even greater acts and I credit your channel and guidance to no small part in that. Sincerely THANK YOU SO MUCH! It is an honor and a blessing.
Loved the video! I always wanted to know more about the frost giants! Also idk if this would make a good video or if you have covered it in the past but I’ve always wondered about the Hyrkanians. Their culture and religion. I know a decent amount because I usually roleplay Hyrkanians but a video covering them in some depth would be really cool!
Did you know that Ymir, the greatest of the frost giants, still exists? He's the Arctic Ice Cap, which once covered all of Scandinavia several times within human experience.
i love your Conan lore and Warhammer 40K lore and i wonder if the traitor legions you've mentioned before like the night lords in relation to the raven guard and Horus himself are getting there own lore video. ?
i'm pretty sure Atali is Ymir first born and as such, would get most of the favor of a god. I could be wrong tho but I do remember you can ask her who she is in age of conan and she mention being Ymir's first and only true born I also got a question.. If Ymir exist..his counterpart, Surtur, should exist as well since both are born at the same time if I remember norse myth. Does the conan universe have a lord of the primal fire?
The Legend of Kern and the Conan RPG claim Frost Giants are simply a pre-human race that humans have driven into the wild places and are slowly dying off, the character Kern is a Cimmerian half-giant he is immune to cold the Nord races learned how to worship Ymir from the Frost Giants
Intriguing representative depth that Hogward gave to the Frost Giants! Great review of the origins of the cult, its ethnic cultural anatomy and ambiguity between worlds! Basically the Ginnungagap like Valhalla and the Jotnars the equivalent of the Einherjar! And surely Atali's Mother could have been Auðumbla! 🌬️⛰️🏔️❄️☃️⛄🌫️🌨️🐂🦣🐻❄️🦍🦧🥶🗻🧊

10:24 "They would hate this channel." Got a good chuckle out of me.
Great job again, Grim.

Been with too many of those
Well, she learned to her horror that Conan wasn't ready for the afterlife.
Greetings from Puerto Rico to everyone!.
Love Puerto Rico, Old Town and El Castillo San Felipe del Morro were awesome to visit!

Such a good bit of lore and perfect story telling that they are not met in the true waking world. More Faye like.
The choice of valheim music here was well-placed.
Oh new Conan Lore!! Awesome!! Haven't seen a notification for Conan Lore in awhile!
I wrote an essay comparing this story to Apollo and Daphne’s story from Ovid and Bulfinch, as REH took direct inspiration from the legend.
feel free to send it in
Would love to read it.
Worth the wait to learn about the frost giants in Conan Wait for the video you do the black ones.

All glory to Ymir
This seems a really great release, given the holiday. Remember your ancestors! And thanks for the great content.
The Frost Giants daughter is one of my favorite Conan stories.
Which is funny because it was never suposed to be a conan story.
It's like Phoenix on the sword in that Howard rewrote an existing story d4aft that never sold as a conan story latter on.

I love all types of Frost Giants in myth and fiction. The Conan take is really interesting.
Yeah definitely is interesting , if Conan as Frost Giants in the lore doesn't that mean Odin , Thor Norse Mythology exists too ?
Conan to Ymir... "Your daughter calls me daddy too!"
I'm so Happy you Git Back to some Conan Lore!
I'd Love you to give your takes on Elrics Lore and World.
The Sovngarde music in the beginning was perfect *Chef's kiss*

I want to do Horus once I get back into some 40K stuff - I like him the most out of the traitor Primarch
@@GrimDarkHalfOff do you know about the chaos War band the true sons? they worship Horus as a god and maintain there sea green legion Colors.
@@GrimDarkHalfOffdo u got a video, on what happen too *Subotai* ? Was he just a one shot character made for the movie and isn't canon ?
Frosty morning for frost giants.
Quick Point, it's not "Anti-God" it's "Not-God", slight difference, but important
I don't know if there are Trolls in the Hyborian age but I know that when the Norse became christianized the Jötunn became Trolls
Somehow I feel like I'm sailing around in Valheim 🤔🎼
for those about to write ... we salute you! 🤟🤟🤟

Ayy conan lore
Were you talking about Marvel's Conan serpent war when you were talking about the old man in texas
No
@@GrimDarkHalfOff fair enough
Didn't Conan kill "Captain America" and Red Sonja teamup with Wolverine before ? Not being funny either , it was in a Marvel *What If* comic book

Would these be the giants mentioned in the 1982 movie by Conan's father when he said giants tricked Crom into giving up the secret of steel?
They would hate this channel 😂

My head canon is that Yimir and Ithiqua are the same beings.
That’s a good idea - I can see the potential
