Sorry about the filming quality on this one! We tried something new and couldn't get the camera to focus quite right. But it was such a great performance by the Dover Quartet that we had to share it! You can hear this track on the Quartet's new album "Encores", out NOW! Listen on Spotify here: spoti.fi/2XMWdhe. The album is full of exciting and beautiful movements from some of the most well-loved quartets. And don't forget to subscribe and hit the bell - we'll be releasing more videos from the album over the coming weeks!
I'm old and I grew up with movies where the camera angle didn't change every 2.5 seconds. I love the idea of the quartet more compressed, more focused physically, but please, the music moves so forcefully that two stationary cameras could capture the moment without being a distraction. The sound mixing of these new videos has been fantastic and, setting aside my curmudgeon-ness, I look forward to more Brooklyn/Dover collaborations.
This is the first recording I've heard where the viola in her solo actually digs into it with just as much energy as when the movement first starts. Most other quartets seem to get tired by this point.
As a former viola player. I 100% agree. Since violas are so underrated, no one really cares about them. But I love this price because it has such a cool viola part.
All of these performers did a great job transporting you into the room with Shostakovich. I checked that my door was locked after they finished. Many pieces of music are marked by their need for clarity, precision, and expression. This piece requires all of that while throwing yourself out the window emotionally and keeping it under control. I am absolutely astounded that this piece has had such a great performance.
It's like tech-death without the drums; why no metal drummer on UA-cam has taken up this piece is beyond me. There needs to be a drum cover of this particular interpretation.
Wow! Shostakovich 8th is, for me, the greatest string quartet. After it lulls me with the cantor of its soft, pastoral opening, this movement is like holding on to a horse that bolts, galloping wildly as I hold on for dear life, yet utterly overwhelmed with joy. And I love how this performance turns it right the way to eleven. Exhilarating!
This piece makes me feel all the emotions, anger, anxiety, sadness, and on top of all that i get goosebumps through out the whole piece. So amazing work of art.
How did they do it before modern technology? I mean flipping the pages! This music is so metal it's almost non-stop. How did they have time to flip the pages?
This is faster than the usual we hear and it's absolutely frightening, freakishly terrifying. It was exactly like how Shostakovich described it, as if it were the piece played on the tragedy of his death
This is the best quartet I have ever seen and heard on UA-cam. The four of them are on the same level, which is very rare! Hope to stick to it, you are the first quartet of UA-cam!
This is the cleanest and most poignant version I've ever heard of this piece!! Better than Jansen's! Some of her recordings (you know the one I'm talking about) are just god awful. This is crisp and balanced yet each part never fades to the background - which is the point!!! It's meant to be up in your face, that's why this movement is so short compared to the others in this suite (that and if this were any longer they wouldn't have any bow hairs left by the end haha) In short, this recording is absolutely phenomenal, you've earned yourself a new fan :)

Honestly it fit the piece perfect.
Holy Shit, Dover Kills ! 💪
The audio quality is A1 though. Which is the most important thing overall.
Are you kidding?! I love it!
I will always love the calm and relaxing style of Shostakovich's work.
lol!
calm and relaxing? LOL
I know, right! Helps me sleep.
I'm chillin' right now to this masterpiece!
😁🤣😁🤣 calm and relaxing in a mad composer kind of style
0:54 this transition can get “muddy” in other versions.
This is best I’ve heard this piece.
Indeed, I am utterly agreed
My favorite part
This is the first recording I've heard where the viola in her solo actually digs into it with just as much energy as when the movement first starts. Most other quartets seem to get tired by this point.
That's what I was thinking!!
This is one of the few performances where the viola really shines.
As a former viola player. I 100% agree. Since violas are so underrated, no one really cares about them. But I love this price because it has such a cool viola part.
I wonder why they might be tired
😉 found you (good video)
relaxing classical music to study to
relaxing? LOL
@@davidrowe1004 that’s the joke. lol
nah this is so relaxing you can even fall asleep while listening
it's actually the emotions you feel when you're stressed before exam that are put into a sound
I actually study to this
This really captures Shostakovich's feeling of having the secret police break down your front door

The first violin was headbanging because of how heavy this metal was lol.
Janine Jansen also did that, and lost some bow hair in the process
Cello line starting at 1:15 slaps so hard!
And 0:53

This is the clearest, fastest, most chaotically beautiful interpretation of this song ive heard.
MOREEEE
(As a violist) Love how the violist really dug in and played with so much passion from beginning to end without even skipping a beat! Great work!!
It's like tech-death without the drums; why no metal drummer on UA-cam has taken up this piece is beyond me. There needs to be a drum cover of this particular interpretation.
Nah it’s already great as is
If you want something similar. Spawn of possession got your back but they already broke up.

I would never describe the first movement as "pastoral"
Yeah, I like it too... -_-
I am a real classical and Baroque fan, and struggle to get into later music. But I really enjoy this.
This piece makes me feel all the emotions, anger, anxiety, sadness, and on top of all that i get goosebumps through out the whole piece. So amazing work of art.

more than likely they have it memorized so they don’t really actually need the music
@@Jake-jy5pq easier than flipping pages tbh
Fun fact - every note is 4 notes per measure (quarter notes ;))
There’s 8 page turns per part. You definitely memorize it.
They simply didn't need to turn the pages as they memorized it. Lol
This song is at around 500 Bpm. There is no way to

I genuinely cannot breath while watching this video. How intense! My heart was twitching all the time till the last note.
this is by far my favorite recording/rendition of No. 8 mv. 2
Man I love Viola
No words can´t describe this performance and the genius of Shostakovich. BRAVO!
As a metalhead, my brain is conditioned differently, so this is quite pleasant and relaxing. 😂
I wouldn't piss off the cellist
The cellist is hot tho.
The violist

Absolutely agree!
loved the viola
Everything is impressive in this video. Best version of this piece I've heard.
Excellent performance! Its hard to channel Shostakovich, because of his.. extreme passion. Great job by these four!
0:53 was playing at full blast in my ears and I kept it like that. It legit scared me
This is my soundtracks life
The performers, the recording quality, the camera work, the setting, all of this is perfect. We should be paying to see this!
Shostakovich lived in a very difficult period of Russian history. This is what war and social unrest do to a person's mind.
Very true!
This is the best performance of one of the best pieces by (in my opinion) the best composer
So incredibly talented. Wow
1:42 you're welcome
Exemplary, spine tingling, never quit. Loved your performance.
Bravoo, always a pleasure to hear new performances by the Dover Quartet 😎👏
This is what goes on in my head
This is the tightest quartet I've ever heard. Amazing~
What camera focus? Was so entranced, didn't notice. Absolutely incredible!! Thank you!
It feels like chaos in the world today which seems to never end but later there is a brightness that comes
This is so so amazing. Thank you!! I loved the filmwork, too! It was so nice to see all the different players.
Borodin, Emerson, Jerusalem... This is the new reference. An insanely good version!
this made me cry
The ending always get me
This is the best interpretation I have heard. Pure pleasure.
one of the greatest interpretations I've ever heard! The whole video is just magical.
Best version ever
The soundtrack of my life
this makes me want to scream in a good way
One of my favorite quartets
Tons of energy. Thank you so much
magnifique, vivant, émouvant
sounds so intense!
The best version of this masterpiece
This has become the soundtrack of my exams ahahah
Ahora estoy escuchando esto. Después, para relajarme, escucharé ACDC! 😂
That's awesome!!!
like metal.= like shostakovich
Whenever I feel stressed or anxious, Dmitry S shows me how much worse I could be.
Ahhh so good! Made me miss my orchestra days in high school
I loved her on season 15
2:20 best part imo
agreed
magnificent work!! i always love this specific tempo for the allegro molto, and you guys pull it off and make it seem effortless! bravo! 💕
Great performance! So much energy!!!
My favorite meditation music 😌
Ah yes... Classical music is SO relaxing. 😌
Wow! Outstanding performance!
Viola is the star of the show🔥🖐🏼

i will propose this song to play during meditations to my yoga instructor.
Absolutely Wonderful!!! Staccato, Andanté, and Forte baby!!!!
Absolutely mesmerizing.
Me when I’m late for class
Just outstandding, just as great as Emerson's well known version.
Wow, that was aMAZing!
yessss shred that viola
This peace is the one of my favorites😍
And I took to these guys at once😇
Awesomeness!
Such a masterpiece
As soothing as a spring morning at the DMZ.
Amazing
so CLEAN!
2:20 this wants me to kill myslef
Painfully intense--it's almost too much to make it all the way through. Shostakovich for the win! Dover Quartet really nailed it
If Strostakovich had lived into the modern era of gaming, he could easily write some bad-ass final boss themes.
This is what is happening in my mind during an exam.
Now that's shreding
simply amazing!
This is the entrance music of my OCD intrusive thoughts right when I’m about to go to bed.
Amazing!
YASSSSS, they sound amazing!
Linda música 🎶 🎶 🎶
Magnífico!
This is the kind of music you'd hear in an old movie depicting murder.
Holy Sh!t! Fantastic!
No joke I've used this as studying music before 😂
pure chaos and pandemonium
DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN…. I want to watch the scary movie that has this soundtrack 😱❤️👏👏👏
Me too!!! This could totally be the score to a horror film. Love it!!!
🔪.......
I'd like to call that movie, Soviet Union.
MARAVILHOSO!!!
Aaagghhh Shostakovich!!
Awesome
