Reminds me of the 1930's when flour companies would decorate their bags because they knew housewives would make dressed out of them
My grandma made us underwear, "bloomers" out of flour sacks, also aprons for herself, among many other stuff

I have a small collection of old flour sacks & they're not rough or anything! The fabric had to be finely woven in order to hold the flour so they're pretty soft.
My grandma said they used them for tea towels, diapers & for their periods. That’s where the term “on the rag” came from.
make double strap handles, 2 short 'tote' handles AND 2 longer ones for over the shoulder that you can tuck inside when not being used
Those sacks are great for a lot of things! You can sew strips and fix the bottom of lawn chairs, make an gardening apron, make a crossbody sack for scattering seed or fertilizer, the list goes on and on.

Don't get me wrong, I love watching Emmy cook and try new foods but its a refreshing breath of fresh air to see something new! Also I love the idea of reusing durable bags as grocery bags! I wish I would've thought to do this while my dog was still alive because his food bags would've made great grocery bags!
I love doing this with all my livestock feed bags,they're very sturdy and can be made into whatever size will work best for you. Some of the bags have pretty cute prints on the front too
Our cow feed has a big cow face on the front, definitely making this as a Christmas gift
I was just thinking of that as well. I keep all our feed bags. What a great idea. We use them for all sorts of things. We mix a few different feeds for our goats & the sugar beet sacks are the right sort of material with horses on it. My work team is having lunch with gifts where when it’s your turn, you can either open a present or steal someone else’s present. This will be a good way to judge their likability. Pretty sure I can get 2 standard grocery bags with one feed sack. Can’t wait.

This is wonderful, Emmy! Our rice bags were a stiff cloth when I was growing up and my grandmother would use the bags to sew shorts for us!
i did this with rice bags too, tiny dot of superglue at the thread end does wonders to keep everything together over the long term. brilliant video, moreso brilliant patience showing it!

Philadelphia recently implemented a plastic bag ban, so I've been looking into making reusable grocery bags so I don't keep buying them when I'm in the store. I have some cool woven basmati rice bags that I've been wanting to repurpose, so thank you for the tutorial!

This is so cool and your sewing machine is amazing! Now all I have to do is find someone willing to share their empty feed or rice bags with me. I've always loved to sew & I was good at it. I don't have a machine like yours, but I have a simple one I bought years ago. In 2018 I inherited my Mom's Singer machine from the late the 50s. I use to stay up to 3 or 4 a.m. sewing in the 70s. In the early 80s I inherited my paternal Grandmother's Singer machine. You know the old black one that had its own wooden case. I always dreamed of being able to have them all setup. Emmy thank you, your video reminded of these great memories. My Mom passed March of 2021 at the age of 95 ❤❤❤
It's funny...I'm watching this video while making poop bags for my dog. Newspapers are delivered in these long bags. I cut them in half and seal the one half using my straightening iron and some tin foil. I have my neighbours saving their bags too. Haven't needed to buy poop bags for years!
I try to use them for cat litter clumps but they aren't big enough. I have to use double bagged Plastic grocery sacks 😥😼
My hubby always teased me when I was one of those "bring my own bags" lady, before it was the norm. I had a bag of bags! 💜

This brings back so many memories! My grandma used to upcycle rice bags into ton of useful things ! Like traveling bags, shopping bags and even costumes for me haha !
So glad I learned how to sew as a very young girl!! My parents both sew! And every single day my mom makes purses, sewing machine covers, towels for the kitchen to hang on your stove handle, wallets, cell phone holders… it’s amazing!
I'm just now, at 27, trying to learn how to sew. I don't have a machine, so I'm learning by hand. I wish someone would have taught me when I was little.

@@Britt590 if you can save $100, Walmart sells a very basic sewing machine for around $80 + tax.
It doesn't have all the newest technology, but it is a very durable sewing machine. I use one of those to teach my children.
@@Britt590 It can be easier to start things when you're younger, since you're not so worried about messing up, but it's never too late to learn to sew and learning new things is exciting at any age! If you're interested, Abby Cox and Bernadette Banner have some great videos of tips on hand sewing for beginners. I'm always excited to hear about people learning to sew, because it's one of my favorite skills and I feel like it's becoming a lost art. So welcome aboard and good luck!

My rice bags are made so thoughtfully they already have a handle and a zipper closure on them. I have been buying them exclusively for years. I love to reuse things of this nature. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for a well-done sewing tutorial. I teach sewing and I think you were very clear in your instructions. I have been collecting my dog food bags to do the same thing with them as they are also made with that very sturdy woven material. Upcycling is such a great thing to do, and I am teaching a class with the 12th graders at my school right now where we are striving not to use any new materials for any of the finished projects. So far, so good!

Nice Halloween costume! At the food pantry where I volunteer, we have a mother/daughter pair who make bags from feed bags. They are sturdy and hold a lot. We use them for people who are walking or riding the bus.

When I lived on Guam , most bulk foods came in bags like that. My sister-in-law made a pillow from the sugar bag. My nephew use to cry for his sugar pillow. He is now 45 and still remembers his sugar pillow.
I love how you still have your very first homemade tote bag even though it is not your favorite. That's just awesome. I am so going to try making these tote bags because I always buy the biggest bag of cat food I can find and I can make a pretty good size tote bag with that.
What that tells me is that the bags will hold up after time. I’ve had enough cheap reusable bags rip after use.

I love this idea. I started collecting the plastic grocery store bags that I was accumulating and before the month was up I was amazed at how much plastic I was consuming by not using a Green Earth Bag. Remember, there is a floating garbage patch twice the size of Texas floating around in the Pacific Ocean (see: the Great Pacific Garbage Patch) as well as others in all of our other oceans. This is a great idea, creating reusable grocery bags! 👏👏
1 manufactured reusable bag would need to replace 10,000 single use bags before it became more eco-friendly.
These home made bags make more sense than buying

I love this so much! I have a German Shepherd, so we go through a lot of dog food and it comes in these big, sturdy plastic bags that aren't recyclable and it always bothered me to have to throw out these giant bags every month or two. I figured there had to be something you could do with them, but it never occurred to me to turn them in to tote bags! Now that I've seen them used as a textile, I'm wondering what else I could make with them. Key tray? Tarp? Oh, the possibilities... I'm never throwing out another dog food bag!

This was so excellent. I love crafting, especially when it's something functional. We have a lot of tarps that get torn and become unusable and now I know exactly what to do with them! 😁

Great idea! Maybe attach the handles before the rest of the sewing?? Or do a double handle, long & short ... like IKEA has on their "tarp" bags. Those are great!!!
I highly recommend making the straps longer than even your original variety. Roughly 12 years ago I did this using cat food bags. The longer straps made it possible for me to make it from the car to the house in one fewer trips. These things are sturdy too! We're still using the original ones from 12 years ago. I wish I had time to make some more.

The pattern you/Emmy uses makes lots of sense, especially for beginners.

I cannot thank you enough for this idea to use my bulk rice bags! I think polyester or nylon thread will last better, and backstitching by hand would actually be stronger (although I don't want to do that to my hands). But I wouldn't be thinking about it without your idea! Thank you!
This is the first video of yours I watched, I loved it and started binge-watching as the weather is miserable outside and I was staying home. I watched so many of your cooking videos and hope you consider doing more videos like these, I am going to contact a couple friends who buy chicken feed and see if I can have some of their bags. I love your personality you are bubbly and explain everything very well.
This reminds me of flour sacks made from cloth during depression era so they could be used to make clothing. My mom had flour sack dresses.

I have quilt made by mother and grandmother. The fabric came from flower bags. They would come in lovely patterns and my grandma would make dresses for my mom. The scraps and the white bags made the quilt. Love what you do!

This is a good project. Those bags are great for shopping. You should make one with insulation for cold or warm stuff and with a zipper closure.

I was literally just dusting off my unused sewing machine for a different project when I saw this post. I am for sure doing this. I am potentially going to seek out products I will use but wouldn't normally buy just to have cool custom bags. 😎 love this kind of stuff
I used to make similar reusable totes using "disposable" plastic grocery bags! If you cut the bottoms and tops of the plastic grocery bag, you can stack them flat (I used 3 to 5 bags stacked I think) and use an iron over a towel to "laminate" them together and get a similar strong plastic "fabric". Then I cut and sewed similar to this tutorial. I've used some of these for years and they are still going strong!
And to not waste the cut bottoms and handles, I would tie all those pieces together and use as a twine for various purposes around the house
Ah the 70.ties is back, my mum and her friends used to make these and even quilt work with coffee bags. I have the pattern in one of my 70:ties crafts books.
Neat idea! I have a relative that makes grocery bags crocheted out of plarn (yarn made from strips of plastic grocery bags).

I remember in elementary school, we had a project for Home Economics class. we had to use juice packaging (like Capri Sun type of packaging). We'll clean it to make sure it's not slimy or sticky and make sure it's empty of any liquids inside, then we will sew it together. Then we had to make sure it stands up on its own and is durable for heavy loads.

Love this video as someone who made a homemade handsewn temperature resistant Violin case out of 85 percent recycled and found materials and is "allergic" to sewing machines any project that is a sewing machine project can be done by hand if you A use a high quality upolstery thread and B backstitching french knots and carful thread melting with a cigarette lighter as needed. Thank you for making me a video that will improve my daily life emensly but that I didn't even know I could ask for.

For those that don't have and can't afford a sewing machine, I recently found a channel called the Sewn Company that has easy and clear tutorials for sewing things by hand! They have left and right handed tutorials.
The stitch that might be good for this project is the Back stitch, since it seems to be pretty strong.
It'll be a little more time consuming, but this seems like a good project to learn hand sewing with!

theres a store called ten thousand villages that is fair trade items, in poor countries. this reminds me of some of the bags i have seen, so creative and so useful!
for beginners especially... its much easier to attach the handles before you put the front and back even on the bag! just keep them well away form the sides

I remember sewing in highschool and breaking the needle because my ambitions outweighed what school machines could do and then yelling the teacher's name because replacing needles and rethreading machines was NOT my bag while mentally cursing. Not wanting to get in trouble for breaking any more class needles I became queen of hand sewing!
I didn't think of those big strong cat food bags. Thank you so much for the idea. I just hope that the needle holes won't weaken the plastic and make them tear since they are not woven. I'll give it a try.
