This video literally has it all. Subtle humour that's never destracting from the explanation, awesome helpful animations, all components of playing the game are very clearly depicted and the build up of explaining is done in a way where it's easy to grasp. This is such a good video i'm really impressed. It's exactly what i want in a boardgame explain video. Please never stop making videos and make more like this. I might be getting too excited over a boardgame tutorial video but fuck it, you've earned it. I hope you gain a lot more subscribers. I'm already recommending you to friends if they ask for suggestions.
I worked as a full-time, professional board game teacher for three years -- this is a fantastic, A+ achievement in teaching Terra Mystica. It's damn near perfect, if a little exhaustive! You really deserve to be proud of this one. Thank you for your hard work.
i had help from the Terra Mystica community checking over the script and giving me pointers, because i knew they'd be disappointed if i made too many goofs!
@Kevin Milloy You can work in a board game cafe. You can work at a summer camp or community center. You can teach game design at the college or university level. You can work at or run an events company. You can work as a rep for a publisher. You can make UA-cam videos like i do (although it's not exactly a sustainable living).
@Kevin Milloy Fair question! I was employed at a small board game café / library. I started as a teacher and eventually served as the curator as well. Depending on the administration goals of any given board game café, the experience of teaching there can be either frustrating or wonderful. I was fortunate enough to work at a very play-focused establishment. We were a very close-knit group. I still hold onto a lot of relationships from that time, both customers and former co-workers. As our teacher hinted: I left because I wanted more financial security. These days I still take part in the industry, but only as a reviewer.
Thank you Ryan, the game deserves a video of this quality. The order in which you presented things was well chosen and the teaching time for the base rules is impressively short. Excellent attention to detail as well. I only realised I didn't know some of the smaller rules until I had to teach three completely green players two weeks ago(if only I had had this video then) and I was writing up a short teaching summary while skimming the rule book to make sure I wouldn't forget anything, and I've been playing the game for about a year now. I had no idea you could split up cult spades over multiple hexes, ditto for bonus action spades if you have any leftovers, didn't know you could return a priest from your board to your pool to move up one step on a cult track, etcetera. The only thing I think you missed was the 10-town limit, which until two weeks ago I thought would never be relevant anyway. Turns out it's not that unlikely in a 5-player game after all.
Terra Mystica is the hardest game I have ever tried to learn. I have still never won, but I wish I had watched this video before our first attempt. It was an utter disaster, 5 guys who had never played before spent 4 hours arguing over how to implement the rules. Setup alone took almost an hour. We didn't even finish it, we abandoned it 3/4 of the way through and it took months before it was back on the table. If you have never played this game before, this video should be mandatory viewing. On top of that, I would strongly recommend you only attempt the game if you have at least 1 person in your group who has played multiple times before, otherwise you may never end up appreciating it. It's a very good economic strategy game, but it takes half a dozen or more plays to get your head around it. The video is great, well done.
Hey man, just wanted to tell you that I like the way you made this explanation. You put efforts to the editing and it's light, friendly and really helped me pay attention and learn it with fun. And it's organized which makes it so helpful, especially for such a complicated game. Thank you
I love that the setup is at the end! Nothing is worse than slogging through a setup for a board when I just wanna see the play action and concept, but it's still integral to these videos. Plus it gives context for all the pieces that go on the board so is well received on the learning end.

The Google searches for the past three games I have been learning have lead me to your channel. Castles of Burgundy, Caverna, and now Terra Mystica, not to mention I have A Feast for Odin on the way... crap.. I just mentioned it... This has been immensely helpful for me. I have a virtual board game meetup coming up where we'll be playing this, but due to us playing remotely, it would be pretty hard for my friend to teach us like he usually does. While I'm unsure I'll win, I'll at least not be the guy asking questions every 6 seconds!

I'm going to be playing this with 4 other people who have played before, so this was a nice introduction so I have some sort of idea about what's going on when they re-explain it tomorrow night.
11:17 I'm confused. "If you're short spades with either of these abilities, you can pay worker cubes to top up to the number of spades you need; BUT if you pay worker cubes, you can't split the spades up into multiple terriforming actions." Isn't using the extra spade to terriform another space considered another terriforming action? And isn't terriforming the extra space part of "either of these abilities"? Also, second question, when you say "the single action that you take on your turn" 12:07, you mean literally I can only take one single action or do you mean I can take each action once per turn?
Great presentation, Ryan. Thank you. I bought Gaia Project because of the solo option. And while I like the game, I am more interested in the Terra Mystica theme than G.P. It appears that there is a solo (fan made) option for T.M. Any feedback from you (or anyone posting here) if T.M. would be worth it for solo using a fan made option?
The 1st expansion is all good except for the Shapeshifters, they are way too powerful 😠. But the turn order board is a must, as you implied, the other factions are interesting to play with. There’s another expansion called “Merchants of the Seas” I know nothing about this but I would like to see you explain the game.
@@harleygrattan2851 i'm still not sure if doing videos on expansions is worth it for the amount of views they'll get? Games like Catan: Cities & Knights are an exception.
Having not played Gaia yet, i've really been trying to get to the bottom of this. But if you don't like space themes, then this is a no-brainer. Just know that there's a simplified version called Terra Nova that you should evaluate as well, if you're in the market.

i’ve only played it once, but had a good time with it. The turn order track is a good addition that you can emulate for free in the base game. The new races were interesting... i played Riverwalkers, while my friend MT played one of the volcanic races. They’re unique because they don’t have a home terrain.
Was looking for a way to easily explain TM to some peeps so they can play with me... I'mma just send 'm all this 'ere video, that aughtta do the trick right?
@@NightsAroundaTable That's not TM. TM can't be *played* until all 14 or 20 (30?) + factions are understood and how their openings will react. If you don't understand the factions for sure, you're not really playing the game. The worst part is is this: back in 2012, some people thought this game was a mechanism salad. Today it's really not. And it's true- there AREN'T ENOUGH moving parts. So no group of factions has enough in common with others to get a good idea of how a 'normal faction' would work.
@@NightsAroundaTable You don't have any idea what to do next time... Because the round tiles will be different and the other better players will have bid for completely different races.
@@NightsAroundaTable The iconography is bad, the round structure (and when/how one may use spades) is not consistent, the way TM players talk about the game mixes cant and general loose re-wordings of things that shouldn't be re-worded. VP Bidding up front... everything about this game is awful and, WITH NO PREDECESSOR, wouldn't be forgiven or excused or 'fan-fixed'/house ruled if released today.
@@coltonbeatty6117 That's definitely the case with something like Root, but i don't see it here. There are dozens of factions available, sure, but you're only ever playing against 3 at a time.
@@coltonbeatty6117 The game takes a couple of hours to play, so what do you mean by "immediately"? Which faction are you trying? And are you playing this with other people, or online? Against humans, or robots?
@@NightsAroundaTable I mean it's obvious pretty soon into the game that there isn't a viable way forward or any big push coming later that could at least put me in serious contention. I play against people as the Giants.
Each space up each track costs 1 priest, and (depending on your faction) priests are hard to come by! You can also feed priests to the 4 spaces below each cult track to move more than 1 notch at once, but those spaces are limited. So it’s a race.

Ryan did a thing. Episode 3: Self-Surgery (Xanthelasma removal with Wartner Pen)

Ryan do you like Terra Mystica Fire And Ice Expansion?
i’ve only played it once, but had a good time with it. The turn order track is a good addition that you can emulate for free in the base game. The new races were interesting... i played Riverwalkers, while my friend MT played one of the volcanic races. They’re unique because they don’t have a home terrain.
@@NightsAroundaTable Cool! That's great to hear 👍 Riverwalkers excellent!
@@NightsAroundaTable Yes that is very right.
Could you please do a how to play for Fury of Dracula 4th edition? Please oh please?
i'll look into it! It's been requested before.
@@NightsAroundaTable Swoon!
Was looking for a way to easily explain TM to some peeps so they can play with me... I'mma just send 'm all this 'ere video, that aughtta do the trick right?
'At aughtta straighten' em roight out!
This game is paradoxically impossible to really play without having already played it. Awful
Quite a few euro games are like that though, are they not? By the time you’re finished playing, you know exactly what you’d do differently next time.
Coming here to say it again: This game is terrible. One of the worst ever.
This game sucks. Makes no sense and is probably broken
If you dial down your petulance a bit, is there something specific i can help you with?
@@NightsAroundaTable I keep trying this game with same faction and just lose immediately
@@NightsAroundaTable So no help with that, huh?
@@coltonbeatty6117 The game takes a couple of hours to play, so what do you mean by "immediately"?
Which faction are you trying?
And are you playing this with other people, or online? Against humans, or robots?
@@NightsAroundaTable I mean it's obvious pretty soon into the game that there isn't a viable way forward or any big push coming later that could at least put me in serious contention. I play against people as the Giants.
I'm confused with the cult track. wouldn't you be able to move up the entire track in one round by moving one space at a time?
Each space up each track costs 1 priest, and (depending on your faction) priests are hard to come by! You can also feed priests to the 4 spaces below each cult track to move more than 1 notch at once, but those spaces are limited. So it’s a race.
