Man life is a lot more enjoyable with diagnostic kits and testers. After I got my AESwave uTest Kit it just makes you so much more efficient. I just received the uActivate, Amp Hound & uIsolate Network Isolator and they'll make diagnosing more fun always with new toys. In a few weeks will order the Voltage Drop Pro which you can set up from 1- 20A load. Don't know why I'm still ordering all this stuff...it's a disease. Great video on the simulators and you nailed it within minutes...time is $$.
Those resistors are standard quarter watt values in the electronics industry. So if you lose one they're a few cents each at a place like Digikey.But that is a nice little connector to fit them into. Also good video on how to go about using them and where to put them. Thanks
For years I've held back on buying that kit because of cost, which is certainly the Cadillac kit for front probing connectors. Pico offer a slightly different kit with three wires in a Y configuration with male and female on two ends and a third wire for testing. It allows one to open a connector and bridge the gap for all wires, then use the third arm to measure voltage for each wire at a time while the system is working with a completely bridged connector. Being able to open a connector, bridge all connections and measure what is happening would be a game changer compared to the old school method of backprobing and peeling back the loom. I already have or could make most of the other parts, but to have exactly fitting front probe options is very appealing. One day, ha ha.
The uTest kit does include 4 Y-adapters for creating that 3rd test point if you wanted to bridge a connection. Going beyond 4 wires with complete coverage is tough because of cost escalation. If you had a specific terminal or set of terminals that you are constantly using we could custom build a set of breakout leads for you.
There's an unmonetized(don't know if that's a word) value in using tools that are enjoyable to use. Doesn't matter if you make or buy them. It encourages and inspires to learn. I find myself looking for a reason to use that exact kit even when it's not necessary. You could have figured a way to just insert a resistor straight into the connector, but where's the excitement in that? Great job sharing as always my friend. Each One, Teach One!

it's not a sensor, it's the actual "explosive device/charge" the opens something allowing the metal steering column to collapse forward or accordion in case of hard front crash that would shove it back into a driver ( tall people have an advantage with the seat way back) :))

10.7 is about what Ford IDS scan tool would indicate as an open as well. Nice kit. I normally have to go on jumping the pins and seeing if I can induce a short DTC code.

I love that kit i bought it over a year ago when i always saw you using it! half the price of the gm kentmore kit and this has more in it! I also use the air bag simulator connector and stick in 120 ohm resistor to help with diagnosing problems on gm high speed lan

Now its November 2022. That kit cost 269.00 bucks now. But over 4 year that's less than 5 cents a day. Well worth it. You have to have the tools to fix things fast.
The steering columns usually have to be replaced in these cars because there was a recall that affected cop cars and a bushing between the steering shaft falling apart in salt water areas, but they affect all cars regardless. I have an 07 CV that I bought brand new and had to replace the column because the steering shaft bushing failed (it's green, you can see it if you look under the column), and my car is in Arizona.

I know that the amount of resistors that come with it probably won’t exactly equal to what you need but I think that you can use that adapter to test and see if the old GM anti theft in the column is giving someone fits as well. Not sure of the technical name for it but its where GM uses the resistor pack in the key to disable or enable the vehicle.
Learned another one, tks again Eric! If you run into one (you probably will) can you do a video in the 2011 and up F150 epas steering rack fail, ford says they just replace the entire rack, 1500 bucks whoa!

Nice vid for aes wave . They do market some nice stuff this terminal test kit comes from several brands from same oem . I got a drawer organiser full of resistors and potentiometers for substituting sensors or faking signal values . These terminal kits make job faster/safer but the diy guys can get by easily for small change and bit of ingenuity with solder iron and heat shrink . This poor guy fitted a junk used column, least easy diag for u :-)
I'm glad I haven't had an airbag problem thus far. I probably would have checked the circuit for an open. Boom. I am about to buy an Autel MS906BT as I continue my semi-retirement dive into learning auto repair just cause it's fun and I'd rather spend money on tools then repairs. I want to stick with an authorized USA dealer. I've bought from AES Wave before. Do you suggest anyone else? low ohm resistors, by the looks probably 1% tolerance. standard values for those working with low values daily. you should be able to order online from many places from cut reels or such.

If you ever lose a resistor, those are common EIA values, and should be available from a local electronics parts wholesaler. . Knowing the wattage of them would help getting a replacement too. HTH
There aren't many local electronic parts wholesalers left. There isn't much call for such parts these days and those who use them purchase via the internet.

Good point. Technically 3.3, but with all the connections I bet it is closer to 3.7, probably close enough. Often I notice significant variance in off-the shelf-resistors anyway. I wonder how close it has to be.
The circuit I'm testing has nothing to do with the airbag or the clock spring. This is for the explosive device that collapses the steering column then is mounted down low on the steering column. When it is plugged in we could see on scandata that it read 10.7 ohms indicating a completely open circuit. By plugging in the 2.7 Ohm resistor we 100% no-questions-asked definitively prove that the wiring is good and the connection is good and that beyond a shadow of a doubt the steering column is junk.
I don't understand how the test proves that the steering column is junk. The test shows that the wiring harness in the car is good and there is some fault in the new column. Given the cost and the time of replacing the column, isn't it worth the time to see if the fault can be corrected? Shouldn't you, at least, remove the covers and have a look?
That component failure is not repairable - if they go bad you have to replace the entire steering column due to liability issues. It is the same way if a seat belt pre-tensioner fails testing - you have to replace the assembly due to liability issues. It is not worth it for Eric to risk his entire shop, business, home, and everything he has ever worked for (and will continue working for the rest of his life) to try to "repair" a safety device that the manufacturer expressly states is not repairable. The lawyers would have a field day if that vehicle were ever to get in an accident - regardless if the steering column "repair" injured the driver or not. The case law in these matters is all against the repair shops that do not follow the manufacturer's repair instructions - just ask the the small body shop in Texas that recently lost a multi-million dollar lawsuit against them for not following the manufacturer's repair instructions exactly as written and doing a repair their own way.
This test 100% no question asks definitively proves that the steering column device is no good. When it is plugged into the steering column it shows 10.7 ohms which indicates an open circuit. Unplugging the column and substituting the 2.7 Ohm resistor 100% proves that the wiring and connection is good therefore there are no other options except to replace the steering column. Since this video was made the column has been replaced and the light is out.
@South Main Auto Repair I think the issue is many people have never seen a "bare" column with this device "made" into it. They also do not understand that there are certain parts that just have to be replaced, due to liability issues that you as a business owner is exposing yourself to when you work on these safety systems. Not sure if you still have access to the old steering column and would be able to post a follow-up video for everyone to see exactly what this part looks like and then explain why you have to replace it rather than attempt to "repair" it - specifically due to the manufacture's written repair directions for this particular safety system.
@Tired old mechanic also the only way to verify that the column is "good" is to plug it into a vehicle with a working control module that can run it's self diagnostics and/or be able to plug in a scan tool & monitor the internal resistance value of the column module. There is no manual testing of electrical resistance of the module, otherwise you risk "setting it off" since the voltmeter sends as small electrical charge through the circuit during resistance (ohm) testing.
Could you check the other side of the circuit with an inline resistor to clamp the current so it doesnt trip the bag? Im not sure a dmm runs enough voltage on a resistance test to trip it, but obviously the computer is running its own ohm test probably by a small voltage bias. Im not sure im brave enough to try this.
oxidation on connectors of airback stuff is 96% reason for our ligth to come on here in Finland if the car has not bean bumbed that that i see. 1% is non airbag sytem fault(communication,battery,etc..). 1% is self made problems. Another 1% is bad airbacg module and last 1% part is from junk yard(ask why and you made my day). And so the last comment is cold! Make sure there is no pinfitment issue and if i may add use silicon greese to it live longer lifebefore you but it back. Reason why i see 0% of airbag failing is as it would mean comeback to the maker of the hole line of cars like Toyota did with some cars if im not mistakeing...

Yep that sound familiar when you fired it up....Pops has a 2000 model, and yes the heater core needs to be replaced.....LOL
you can buy "airbag resistors" on ebay and just use crocodile clips on normal test leads

If you ever lose a resistor, those are common EIA values, and should be available from a local electronics parts wholesaler.
. Knowing the wattage of them would help getting a replacement too. HTH
There aren't many local electronic parts wholesalers left. There isn't much call for such parts these days and those who use them purchase via the internet.

He likely replaced the column due to an Air bag issue. which in turn, created yet another air bag issue. :D
my free tip . if your ever stuck for a 3.7ohm resistor take 3 10ohm and twist the ends together . that gives you very close to 3.7ohms of resistance
Good point. Technically 3.3, but with all the connections I bet it is closer to 3.7, probably close enough. Often I notice significant variance in off-the shelf-resistors anyway. I wonder how close it has to be.

Super Mario Diagnostics Could be the clock spring, or the air bag its self.
The circuit I'm testing has nothing to do with the airbag or the clock spring. This is for the explosive device that collapses the steering column then is mounted down low on the steering column. When it is plugged in we could see on scandata that it read 10.7 ohms indicating a completely open circuit. By plugging in the 2.7 Ohm resistor we 100% no-questions-asked definitively prove that the wiring is good and the connection is good and that beyond a shadow of a doubt the steering column is junk.

I don't understand how the test proves that the steering column is junk. The test shows that the wiring harness in the car is good and there is some fault in the new column. Given the cost and the time of replacing the column, isn't it worth the time to see if the fault can be corrected? Shouldn't you, at least, remove the covers and have a look?
That component failure is not repairable - if they go bad you have to replace the entire steering column due to liability issues. It is the same way if a seat belt pre-tensioner fails testing - you have to replace the assembly due to liability issues. It is not worth it for Eric to risk his entire shop, business, home, and everything he has ever worked for (and will continue working for the rest of his life) to try to "repair" a safety device that the manufacturer expressly states is not repairable. The lawyers would have a field day if that vehicle were ever to get in an accident - regardless if the steering column "repair" injured the driver or not. The case law in these matters is all against the repair shops that do not follow the manufacturer's repair instructions - just ask the the small body shop in Texas that recently lost a multi-million dollar lawsuit against them for not following the manufacturer's repair instructions exactly as written and doing a repair their own way.
This test 100% no question asks definitively proves that the steering column device is no good. When it is plugged into the steering column it shows 10.7 ohms which indicates an open circuit. Unplugging the column and substituting the 2.7 Ohm resistor 100% proves that the wiring and connection is good therefore there are no other options except to replace the steering column. Since this video was made the column has been replaced and the light is out.
@South Main Auto Repair I think the issue is many people have never seen a "bare" column with this device "made" into it. They also do not understand that there are certain parts that just have to be replaced, due to liability issues that you as a business owner is exposing yourself to when you work on these safety systems. Not sure if you still have access to the old steering column and would be able to post a follow-up video for everyone to see exactly what this part looks like and then explain why you have to replace it rather than attempt to "repair" it - specifically due to the manufacture's written repair directions for this particular safety system.
It must be difficult to find a good column in a salvage yard as most have deployed in collisions.
@Tired old mechanic also the only way to verify that the column is "good" is to plug it into a vehicle with a working control module that can run it's self diagnostics and/or be able to plug in a scan tool & monitor the internal resistance value of the column module. There is no manual testing of electrical resistance of the module, otherwise you risk "setting it off" since the voltmeter sends as small electrical charge through the circuit during resistance (ohm) testing.
Could you check the other side of the circuit with an inline resistor to clamp the current so it doesnt trip the bag? Im not sure a dmm runs enough voltage on a resistance test to trip it, but obviously the computer is running its own ohm test probably by a small voltage bias. Im not sure im brave enough to try this.

oxidation on connectors of airback stuff is 96% reason for our ligth to come on here in Finland if the car has not bean bumbed that that i see.
1% is non airbag sytem fault(communication,battery,etc..). 1% is self made problems. Another 1% is bad airbacg module and last 1% part is from junk yard(ask why and you made my day).
And so the last comment is cold!
Make sure there is no pinfitment issue and if i may add use silicon greese to it live longer lifebefore you but it back.
Reason why i see 0% of airbag failing is as it would mean comeback to the maker of the hole line of cars like Toyota did with some cars if im not mistakeing...
