How To Fit A Motorcycle Top Box (Givi Monolock)

  • I recently bought a Givi 340N (34 litre) top box for my Honda XR 150L motorcycle. As I was fitting it anyway I thought it was worth making a how-to video of how to fit one. Although this luggage uses the Givi monolock system to mount to the motorbike rack, the principle is the same for every topbox I've seen and fitted previously.

    Not only a great video, well explained, but also what a coincidence, I just picked up my XR150L with rack, (2016) so spot on! Curiosity though, your accent sounds English, but the plate looks to be from another country.....my accent too is English (with a hint of Bristolian), but me and the bike? We are in Colombia, South America.

    Rich hi i also have a new xr150 so im glad i found your video. Do those clamps hook on to one or both of the bars? It looks like just one. Mine only fit one bar each really. I didnt try it yet but maybe once it's clamped down it will be tight enough. I have 4 clamps. I think have also seen a steel plate used on the bottom with 4 holes so you make like a sandwich and the plate is the bottom piece of bread. Not sure if i can buy that somewhere or need to make my own.

      Yes, on this one the front 2 clips were only on 1 bar because of the spacing of them, and the rear one managed to cover 2. Even just covering 1 bar then because of the shape and the number of clips it is totally solid though.

    Thanks for that, is there a catch on the box to release it from the rack?

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Eric, yes, I should have really mentioned that in the video too. As well as the red button above the key for opening the box, there's another red button below the key that when pressed releases the box from the mount. This only works when the box is unlocked for security though.

    What's your opinion?

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  Рік тому +2

      All the Givi topboxes are decent so I guess it's down to how much space you need. I actually have 4 topboxes now ranging from 30L to 47L and multiple bikes. The beauty of getting them all with the same mounting system is that you can fit any box to any bike 👍

    Hi mate, looking to attempt this on a suzuki burgman 125, the issue is there's only 2 screws to hold it. That's not going to be enough right?

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  9 місяців тому

      You mean to hold the baseplate on? If so, then you definitely want at least 3 of the brackets and I usually use 4 myself and have never had any issues

    Timely video. I am just about to fit a 26-litre Givi box to my KTM Duke 390. I have a very interesting Indian luggage rack on the bike. It can be made to sit in the conventional position or above the rear seat. It is a Zana, if you want to google it.
    You needed an assistant. Almost impossible to show the process on your own whilst holding a video camera.

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  3 роки тому

      Haha, good timing then and that rack looks interesting 👍 Yes it was a bit trickier doing the job one handed but I only decided to record the process at the last minute and didn't have a tripod handy which would have been a better idea! 😂

      Glad it helped! And on some boxes the handle mechanism takes some getting used to as it the whole handle section has to be pulled back and then up and over the latch to click back down. And this can only be done with the key in and the box unlocked.

      @@RichRides My son's pointed out that there is a plastic edge which sticks up and is fouling the latch so I'm going to have to carefully take a file to it tomorrow to try and ease this up.

    if you got one fitted to your bike is it easy to take it off fit plate on other bike ?

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  13 днів тому +1

      Yes, just remove the box and unbolt the carrier from the rack and fit to the rack on the new bike. If you have more than 1 bike then if you use the same make/carrier you can move boxes between bikes. I'm lucky enough to have a couple of bikes and a few different size boxes (all Givi Monolock) and can just fit any box on any bike 👍

      How do you stop someone taking the box once it's clipped in? Do you have to use a key or something to remove it from the monolock plate? Thanks

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  6 днів тому

      @@gregmartyn1976 yes, the box can only be removed if the lock is unlocked.

    how about removal of the top box? im thinking if someone tries to steal the whole box coz it looks so easy to install..

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  2 роки тому +1

      The box itself is locked to the plate and you need the key to remove it. And the plate can't be unbolted from the rack as once it is loosened the top bolt also spins and can't be accessed from above without removing the box.

    • @RichRides
      @RichRides  6 місяців тому

      Yes, the topbox needs to be unlocked to be able to remove it. And the access to the bolts that hold the plate on need to be accessed from the top to remove so they're pretty secure.

      Unfortunately, I don't have a garage but do use covers in winter for all my bikes. Despite this, they all got some surface rust over winter. I have, however, just last week had the frame and rack repainted on this XR so it looks great again 👍
