Chaco War, (1932-35), costly conflict between Bolivia and Paraguay. Hostile incidents began as early as 1928 over the Chaco Boreal, a wilderness region of about 100,000 square miles (259,000 square km) north of the Pilcomayo River and west of the Paraguay River that forms part of the Gran Chaco. The conflict stemmed from the outcome of the War of the Pacific (1879-84), in which Chile defeated Bolivia and annexed that country’s entire coastal region.

Paraguay is Beautiful, I have been there. Me as a Colombian can recognize that Paraguayans are basically Colombians, it is just that they are more Southwards
South America as a whole has an insane history but literally the only way of even getting a concept of them existing is by someone else telling you.
I remember learning just a few factoids about Paraguay's war under Francisco Solano Lopez, in which this self-identified Napoleon of South America also waged war against all his neighbours and was eventually defeated after 6 years, and a huge loss of population, from "Ripley's Believe it or not" as a kid. Not exactly authoritative history, but in the pre-internet age it was a great vehicle for tiny bits of arcane knowledge. Never forgot that anecdote. I think the main reason for its remembrance in the outside world is Lopez' Irish mistress, Eliza Lynch, a colorful character in her own right.
Not much memorial to the sufferings of Paraguayan soldiers in some of the harshest environmental conditions of any campaign, but at least one Canadian guy remembers the War of the Triple Alliance.

Story time: During most fo the 30s, the Argentine and Paraguayan government were very friendly, and they had a lot of indirect support during the war and under-the-table dealings during the war. The biggest of these was in the form of Saavedra Lamas, the Argentine foreign minister, who was an important figure during all the peace talks and negotiations. Saavedra Lamas would inform the Paraguayan foreign minister of the proposals, and if they felt it didn't benefit Paraguayan ambitions, or it threatened Argentina's plans for diplomatic hegemony (see "anti-war treaty of non-aggression and conciliation" and "ABCP pact"), the proposal got turned down.
Up to 6 proposals got shut down, and at one point their meddling resulted in the US withdrwaing their diplomats from the scene.
Saavedra Lamas won a Nobel Peace Prize.

I am curious how long it took for people living in annexed regions of South America to start identifying with their new country.
Most of them were sparsely inhabited (by the native peoples) or not inhabited at all.
Disputed territories that have been outright annexed in North and South America have had the tendency of being sparsely populated. The only one I can think of that wasn't the case is the Haitian conquest of the Hispanola island, though that didn't last long due to subsequent insurgency.
Most were Indigenous so no identifying with any side.

Its because paraguayan males have achieved the sigma male grindset, therefore you are not chad enough to understand why they attack "stronger" nations
it's called trying to get more territory, Paraguay a lot of times wanted to colonize the lands of other countries because they were empty and they could colonize them, create cities, get land to raise cattle or cut down trees, solve some problems with unemployment, the problems of having a small land and a group of people that want to use that land

Much admiration from America over here.
It was bloody on all sides, all sides pretty much agree that the whole thing just sucked and that there were no real winners.
The video doesn't do the complexity justice either (not a critique of the video, the point was to show general land domination and it did that), as indigenous tribes, federal governments, neighboring countries, and independent groups all had part in the war.
That's what happens when you entrust a guy with your entire strategy just because he's German.

For added context about how this affected Bolivia, it was common practice in this war for Aymara activists - and likely other indigenous activists - in Bolivia to be drafted into the conflict - where the odds of death/capture and surviving were 50/50.
