  • Haystack boilers powered Newcomen and, later, Watt steam engines. Far more efficient steam boilers came along later, and were needed for high-pressure steam engines, but for the decades when atmospheric engines ruled the world, these were perfect.

Future videos will cover the more advanced boiler designs.

    Interesting.

Someone should set up one of these. Unfortunately, they only work with atmospheric engines, and no one really runs those, even in museums, outside of maybe a handful in England.

It's surprising that there aren't more of these around.

Like so many steam engines, they were scrapped for the metal.

Yep. At the time, they weren't historic. The only stuff that survived was because it was too much trouble, or too expensive, to scrap.

I heard these boilers came from breweries, where they used boilers for beer brewing. There is a similarity

I hadn't heard that, but it's possible they directly evolved from there. Breweries typically try hard to never build up pressure (using bubblers to handle that), but for haystack boilers, you never really wanted them much over 5psi, anyway, so it probably wouldn't be a big jump, and they were large enough, so definitely could have inspired them.
