It's unfortunate, but if we expect foreigners to abide by our laws, and face the penalty for breaking them, then we to must accept the same conditions when traveling to another country. 12 years is excessive to us, but they don't want people taking bullets into their country, so they obviously hoped a 12 year sentence would stop someone from trying it. I think this story will make more travelers double check their bags if they are gun owners. Ignorance of the law is not a defense, so they say.
The thoughtlessness of the passenger in not checking his baggage was not only his fault but TSA's, as they admitted when they said they missed it. One should abide by foreign countries' laws, yes, but like so much in life, there exists a double-edged sword, as existence is so much more complex than we would like it to be. The irony here is that the twelve years is excessive for such a minor infraction, and that the prosecuting country/territory must pay for that person (assuming they don't pay bail and all extenuating charges) to remain there, thus making them a little poorer (after all, the person's home country would never pay for one of their citizens for committing crimes on land they don't own or control). When enough laws are excessive such as this, citizens from various parts of the world tend to boycott such an unfair nation by simply not visiting it, thus harming that nation's economy all the more. Gun owners should be more responsible if they use their carry-on bags for multiple purposes, which is on them. As for that old saying, ''ignorance of the law is not a defense for not knowing the law'' is from Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes from 1651, written at a time when there was a very high percentage of illiteracy and overall lack of education in England and most countries, where most countries didn't have free public schooling to educate their citizenry. Many countries have tens of thousands of laws, and no one knows them all by heart, not even lawyers (one of the dirty truths about lawyers is that they actually research laws they're unfamiliar with, or to remember the details about it ((see ''The Terrible Truth About Lawyers: How Lawyers Really Work and How to Deal With Them Successfully by Mark H. McCormack)). When a person takes the attitude that they should know every single law, it's the State's fault for failing to educate their citizenry on each and every one of those laws, inside and out, as no one of us is taught anywhere near enough on every single law in existence (as, to be fair, we must count every other country and territory). Therefore that line is one for an authoritarian or dictatorship, one who designs to control their citizenry, and not to be fair to them.
