What the World's Greatest (Two-Handed) Bowler Can Teach You About Daring to Look Stupid | PTFO

  • It's easy to shot-shame a player at the free-throw line and athletes who throw funny. From the depths of that bullying and loneliness, though, a revolution is brewing, with adaptations so innovative that they may shame sports themselves. Pablo goes bowling with Jason Belmonte - the two-handed Tiger Woods of the lanes - and learns how to succeed in life while looking kinda stupid.

One HUGE figure that I'm reminded of by this story is skateboarder Andy Anderson who wears a helmet at all times despite the stigma in skating. It isn't performance related exactly, but another pioneer in daring to look stupid and now creating a new generation of kids who wear helmets.

The greatest bowler in history, Walter Ray Williams Jr. even has some titles on the senior tour with 2-hands, but what's most amazing about bowling is that 1-handers still have a place on tour, even if the era of strokers has been long over, crankers and even some tweeners can keep up with 2 handers in terms of power and retail all the accuracy and control using a thumb gives you

Jason is definitely the GOAT of the bowling world, bar none. His name is up there with Walter Ray Williams II, Norm Duke, Earl Anthony. He is also a great ambassador for the sport and a generously awesome person, period. We are lucky to have him as a great prodigy for the sport and as a great role model.

Almost every city with bowling alleys in the US has really good bowlers. But what Belmo and the pros do is on another level. They bowl on much harder oil patterns that demand accuracy and consistency, as well as versatility. What us league players are regularly shooting 300’s on is called a “house shot” and it’s designed to allow a player to have miss room and still get the ball to the pocket. I booked a 241 average a couple years ago, and I would probably be the worst player on the professional tour by a pretty wide margin.

Would be interesting to also cover times when sports' bodies 'won' these fights. Pro golf has at least 2 contemporary examples -- Sam Snead and croquet style putting was banned not because it wasn't legal by the definition of golf, a ball was still being struck not pushed, but the powers that be decided it was a style that was unbecoming of the game of golf. And very similarly, the anchored putting style was banned just a short time ago in 2016. There are times when 'that looks stupid' wins.
