- There's a new grocery store in New York, but don't try to eat any of the food inside. "8 'Till Late" is an art installation from British artist Lucy Sparrow that sells products you would typically find in an NYC bodega, except everything is made out of felt. It's perfect for Instagramming, and yes, there's even a bodega cat.

Wow. I assumed that all of the items would've been sewed by a sewing machine, but ALL of them by HAND? Now that's perseverance, determination, and hard-work alright. I think it's so cool that people could buy the "products"! They're part of a larger installation, but they're also complete art pieces in themselves! How many art installations let you buy pieces of it to take home? And now there are presumably thousands of New Yorkers with little fragments of this installation sitting on a shelf or in a drawer! I love that!

the thing people fail to realise is shes an artist who opened up a really neat installation. treat it as a gallery and you buy pieces you enjoyed, at an actual affordable price. most gallery prices are in the hundreds and even thousands, thats just people off the street at a small installation. the fact that she made thousands of really quality pieces, out of felt, in 6 months is overwhelmingly fast. she had to not only create these pieces but pay for the supplies, the rental space, and who ever helped her set it up. im almost certain there are other costs as well. theyre $20 for a pack of gum because she has to make her money back.
its like when people go to an art museum and buy a $10 magnet, only youre actually getting a piece of the art for a reasonable price. people go to toya r us and buy a $60 dollar stuffed minecraft enderdragon for their kid who ignores it after Christmas. i think a realistic bottle of jager out of felt is a much more intresting buy! has a story behind it too. so whatever you know, its not the worst thing.

MiyuxxKankuro Yes, materials can be cheap. But you aren't factoring the time she took to make it (Where I live minimum wage is 11 USD an hour,) the fact that she is British so she may have had to fly here, ship the art here, and stay somewhere in the city, and the fact that she has to rent that building where the installation is at. On top of that she has to turn a profit large enough to live off of for several months and large enough to buy new art supplies for her next project. Her work is actually surprisingly affordable (look at custom plush sold online and a lot is 20-50 USD.)
That's the thing about art. You aren't buying the raw materials, you are buying a finished product that took time to make. Besides, no one is forcing you to buy the work.

There is NO WAY one person made all this in six months. I've personally hand sewed with felt for years, and it can be quite tedious. It takes hours and hours to complete a little project. She must have had a team helping. A lot of her lettering is glued on too, which can cut down in time but doesn't look as nice as hand embroidery. It is goals AF though.
