I'm here in Scotland (in my 200+ year old weavers cottage) having just spun my first bobbin full of slightly uneven, slightly wonky yarn thanks to your video Evie-thank you! 💜
Evie.... I have been watching your channel now for years. I have several drop spindles and have been dreaming of the day when I could afford to buy my first wheel. Well, yesterday I was at my local yarn shop on an off day for sitting and stitching, and in walked a lady who wanted to sell her Ashford Traveller for a very reasonable price. I simply couldn't snatch it up any faster... Now, I have been cleaning it up and tightening the bolts and grinning the entire time. So, I had to watch this video all over again. Thank you so much for this channel and all the knowledge you share so freely. 🥰🥰
I know nothing about fiber arts, or spinning yarn, but this video makes me want to. After watching this video I feel like I could pick this hobby up and know what I’m doing.
I finally got a spinning wheel, this lady's videos have helped me so much! I have such a feeling of accomplishment as I look at my skeins. I can't wait to start knitting with my own yarn! ☺️
My husband just bought a "antique" s.wheel on auction and is restoring it. Because of all these positive comments I'm going to save this video for when he's done and try it out. Thank you. 😊
You helped me spin my very first bobbin!!! Even though it's crazy thick and thin, and over and under twisted, I finally have a continuous strand! Now I can finally spin my own Icelandic sheep wool. . After many hours of frustration with over twisting, bunching up at the orifice, breaking yarn, zero progress, lots of choice words, and ultimately giving up, I finally found your video. The step-by-step with the practice yarn is EXACTLY what I needed! Your cheery attitude and positive outlook are the icing on the cake to your beginner-friendly teaching style. THANK YOU!!
Hi Evie! I just have to say that I love you so much! I was literally crying with my fiber on the hand because I could not make my new spinning wheel work, you are an angel, and you made me smile so much!! THANK YOUUUUUU. Love from Peru
As an embroiderer, I was just gifted a castle-style spinning wheel and BAGS of roving. You've broken these steps down so well; it's very clear what I need to do and what I need to practice! Thank you so much!

I also have fiber from our rescued (now pet) alpacas. I've been learning how to wash, pick and card the fiber, and now it's time to spin on my Ashford wheel. Oh boy, let the fun begin!!!! So glad I found your channel, JillianEve! Karin, I'd love to see what you're spinning!

Terrific step by step! I have tried to learn unsuccessfully many times over the last 5 years or so. I love how you broke it down into just practicing treadling, then practicing with yarn before adding fiber. It was so helpful.
I have always wanted to learn how to use a spinning wheel. It is on my life's bucket list. This year I was magical gifted a little spinning wheel! This was the best starter video I've seen. Thank you for the practice tips. I'm going in to do them now! I just bought my first wheel & am driving myself insane finding the wheel spinning forward then backwards (LOL) and ending up with spun spaghetti.....now I see why. What you point out about being able to spin onto the bobbin then also be able to withdraw the yarn back really emphasized focusing on tension & I also see what I've been doing wrong. Keep these tutorials coming. :) Thanks so much.
So as someone who knows very little about wool, other than it comes from hairy animals and makes nice jumpers, I decided that it would be a good idea to make some yarn😂 Last year a mate gave me a bag full of fleece, this was to use around plants to deter the slugs but it didn’t work. It has been sat in the bag since so I decided I ought to spin it. Easier said than done! I made a drop spindle (Turkish) out of the wood pile and bought some cheap horse brushes to card it. Obviously with little clue about what I was doing. I posted the results of my adventures to my mates on WhatsApp, and one of them asked if I wanted a spinning wheel that his Grandad made years ago, to which I replied in the affirmative (I’m a great believer in serendipity and synchronicity). So I got it home and tried to get it up and running by tying a new drive belt. This was what you call a castle wheel I think, with a double pulley. Two pulleys, two ropes right? Wrong! I watched your vid on putting the driver belt on👍 perfect. Now to start spinning. Well as you can imagine it was a bit of a disaster, learning to walk before you run is very apropos. So this video and your other videos (and all the other people who have taken the time and effort to upload their own tutorials) have been very helpful. I have learned a lot. It would appear that the fleece I have is a bit short, so I may have to find another use for that, like felting, although it is dark brown so won’t take colour (natural dying of the yarn, no bleaches, using plant dyes and home made mordants is what piqued my interest in the first place). My mate with the fleeces also has some bags of alpaca, so I will have a go with that as it may be longer. I also bought some carding pads online, as the horse brushes didn’t work, but these were only little 4” dog brushes, but at least I know that the aim is to present the fibres to the spinning machine with the fibres brushed out and in line. It is a very interesting experience and learning curve, and your delivery and clarity of explanation, camera work and editing are superb, many thanks.
I just got my first spinning wheel yesterday after desperately wanting one for 30 years. I’m looking forward to starting to use it for the wool I’m being given in September. Now thanks to your video I will be able to practice until then. Thank you so much, I look forward to watching the rest of your videos ❤
Second video watched today...WOW you are an amazing teacher. Thank you 💖 not sure I'll ever spin, but I'll never stop learning. Almost 60 years of knitting or crocheting, have always wanted to spin, dye, weave, etc...
Dear Eve, Thank you for this video and the wonderful manner in which you teach. I just got my very first spinning wheel (Ashford Kiwi 3) and have not started spinning actual fiber. I am still in the practicing treadling and adjusting the tension and twist phase. I am following your instructions and I am very grateful for them. Please keep making videos for beginners.
Just finished my first bobbin! I spun up 36 grams of a single using some pencil roving I had purchased and dyed over the weekend. I tried not to focus on the consistency (or even realistically the twist), my main goal was just being able to keep the wheel spinning and to keep up the drafting. The yarn broke a few times, but with minimal waste I was able to get the fiber attached again. Because the single I spun was so dark, I think I'm going to spin a similar amount of the natural fiber and then ply them together to hopefully get a really pretty two color plied yarn. Your video was super helpful!!
JillianEve - First, loved your video. Your presentation is welcoming and gives us permission to "not get it" right off the bat. I've been spinning for several years and have a small traveling wheel that is both cool to use and a pain in the neck. It uses a direct drive concept (no drive band) and it's really reactive to stops and starts, which can make my plies a little janky sometimes, and the wheel can get away from me very easily, very quickly. Your reminders to slow down when necessary are very welcome. Spinning should be a relaxing and contemplative activity - maybe even meditative - not stressful. Thanks for your video.
First spinning I've watched. I think you are very clear and I love the step by stip. I'm going to be taking a class this year so I wanted to have some idea of what to do. I think I'll be watching you a lot. Thanks for all your hard work.
Getting my first spinning wheel today at the age of 67! A long-time dream fulfilled. Merry Christmas AND Happy New Year. This absolute beginners video was the start to many a good tutorial and successful spinning. Reading your blogs, it seems one should name their wheels for a better, close relationship. I've chosen two. First is Sara for the song "Sarasponda" learned in an elementary school choir. The second is Eileen for the 1840's Spinning Wheel Song. Honestly, so I could use Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen." 😆
Working on getting a spinning wheel (at the age of 70) to make the beautiful rovings I've seen available into lovely yarns to knit into beautiful stuff to wear. Thank you for showing how spinning wheels actually work! Now I'll work on getting one so I can get started! Thank you, dear lady. Your videos are a great help to me, and I'm hoping to get started as soon as I can get a wheel. Yay!
I'm so glad I found this video! I am working for the summer in an old woolen mill turned museum, and I'm trying to learn how to use a spinning wheel. So far it has only resulted in frustration. But I think your clear instructions will help.
I'm so excited to try my spinning wheel. 3 months ago you got me into drop spindle but know I've pulled the spinning wheel out to try it. You have been a massive help for my spinning journey so thank you soo soo much Jillian.
oh my goodness, thank you so much for a simple but excellent explanation of how to start spinning 🙂 I've been sitting practicing with my piece of yarn, it's amazing I think I have it all together and then.....start thinking and my wheel goes backwards 🙂 I am looking forward to learning how to spin, and watching more of your videos. Thank you sooooo much for all this information
Thank you, that is such a clear video, I’m a total novice about to be gifted an old spinning wheel from my mother in law and raw Dartmoor fleeces from a friend…. Here we go!!! You’re lovely to watch and listen to 👏
My best friend bought me a beautiful spinning wheel. It is an Ashford Elizabeth. It is so pretty.. I have never spun, but now I am so excited! Your video has me so excited!! I will have to bring out my wheel and it's little chair, that came with it. I have some acrylic roving that I was told is good to play with. I don't want to play with good wool. Lol Well, not yet. Thank you for making this seem easier than I was seeing before. 🥰🥰🥰😍 I will have to upload videos as I play with my wheel. Thank you again! Shelley Stewart Aka MRS. STEWART
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I've taken beginner spinning classes through our local hand spinning guild but left so confused. I finally get the tension because of this video! I've had my wheel for 8 years. I finally have a permanent home for it and want to start spinning. Thanks to your video, I have hope that I'll actually be able to make usable yarn! 😁
Thank you so much for this video. I really struggled to learn twice over the last year. After watching this video, I now feel empowered and so much more confident. That's with only just using your technique for practicing with already made yarn!
Absolutely going to try know. I have the exact spinning wheel like you. At first i was shy for the older look of it... because it was bougth in a Frith shop! That's what i could afford. Never tried, but i had this eager to spin for ever! Thank you!
Thank you so much. I am a new Alpaca Owner, have just gotten my first wheel and floor loom. I am a metal artist by trade. I really enjoyed the Basic teaching you have given here. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
I am one of those people who _hates_ when tutorials have all these preliminary steps ... yeah yeah yeah just tell me how to spin!! But I have to admit: these exercises before I start spinning are exactly what I needed in order to make the first spinning go smoothly. As a bonus, I was able to use my practice time to ply some yarn that I haven't been able to use for knitting because it was spun the wrong direction!
What an excellent video for absolute beginners. I am considering getting my very first wheel in the next few months, and I feel like you provided just enough information to get me started. I like the low-risk approach, where you start with getting the hang of treadling, then moving up to spinning yarn, and so on. I did the same thing when my daughter lent me a spindle, and I practiced on a single Ply yarn I had in my stash. She was amazed how quickly I got that hang of spinning actual fiber after. Thank you Evie ❤
I don't spin. But I've always wanted to know about a spinning wheel. It was completely mysterious to me how it worked. You've answered all my questions. Thank you.
i just found your videos. Thank you for the wonderful explanations especially all the wrong things that we do when we start spinning. I have had a wheel for 3 years now and am still unhappy with my spinning but i will go back to the beginning and practise all those tips you suggested. You are an inspiration to anyone beginning to spin.
Oh my gosh, your video was incredibly helpful! I have been trying to learn to spin for a few years now after I was gifted a majacraft spinning wheel. I can’t wait to watch your next video(s)🙏🏼❤️🧶
After looking around for beginner spinning videos/tutorials, I finally hit gold when I found your videos, Evie! Thank you. I've loaded up 4 bobbins of yarn that I spun, thanks to you. To be clear, it's all CRAP yarn, but it's crap yarn that I spun! LOL I understand that this craft requires some patience... in the meantime, I'm practicing with your cheery voice on my shoulder, battling the Crap voice on my other shoulder.
Thank you for these videos! I have a new wheel and completed one class on spinning. I got so much benefit from your teaching style. Know we will be “lunching” together for a while!
Oh this is such a useful video! I'm a drop spinner thinking of getting a spinning wheel...the tension bit gave me such a laugh - hanging on to that fibre - oh I can see that happening to me big time 😂😂😂
My sweetheart is on his way to go get me my first ashford spinning wheel as my Christmas gift!!! Thank you so much for this video. I can't wait to see if I can get it work as easily as you do!!
Thank you so much for this video. I finally bought my 1st spinning wheel & am very excited to try it out!! You are so relaxed & kind here that it makes me feel relaxed as well.
I acquired an old (damaged) Ashford yesterday and this video showed me so much cool stuff, I can't wait to get it fixed and take another step on my road to self-sufficiency. Thank you for the information.
I have been struggling with my spinning wheel. I jumped right in trying to spin fiber. I thought how different can it be from a spindle. Between your video on how to put on a double drive band and this one. I will feel confident enough to join my guild at our retreat. Your videos help me to solve lots of my problems.
Thank you so much for making such an encouraging video. You do not need the music because your voice is so relaxing and yet perky...and that's what people like me like. But, always produce as 'you' see fit, lol. Continuing to watch....and WOW...one of the best videos for beginners that I've seen! Love the recommendation of using the two color loop of yarn to watch the spin. O.K., edited twice now, lol. You are beautiful! Thank you, again.
What a brilliantly clear video of how to start. Great personality, so happy with sharing your skills. I’m ready to start to learn how to do it for myself. Thank you
I was given a bare bones 1975-ish Ashford traditional, just like yours! Thanks to an Ashford maintenance kit, and your video on Scotch tension, I was able to make it operational again. LOL, but I couldn't spin! After watching this video though, I will try again, and I'm confident that I will succeed this time. Thank you!
Thank you so much Evie, this video has resurected my spinning mojo. I bought my wheel, the same model as yours, and joined a spinning club a month before we went into lockdown. Now I will start again as what I learnt in my first session has well and truly vanished.
I work at historic cold spring village as the weaver. They’ve been trying to get me to spin for 5 years and I’ve fought it. Your vid has me plying yarn for projects and now I’m actually spinning. THANKS
Thankyou so much I am 72 and just received a spinning wheel and I am anxious to get started I have been practicing treadling and now I am going to practice with practice yarn🤗
I love your videos! Your explanations are so clear and your love for fiber craft is infectious. This helped me get going with my Ashford traditional after years of spinning with a drop spindle. Also, your wheel is gorgeous. Thank you!
I have watched your video several times and now feel that I am ready to start the learning process. Looking forward to having a proper go. Wish me luck.
I finally set up my spinning wheel after 3 years!! I’ve watched your videos for a while now and find them the most helpful. I have a spinning class in a couple of days and so excited to learn. I love how this video is set up. Practice peddling. As soon as I set up my ladybug, I went to work it and found how difficult it was!! Omg. It was going back and forth and really started to freeze up with my feet!! This is so helpful of learning the basics of spinning. Thank you 😊
I’m so excited! I have subscribed and been watching your videos for quite some time. I had a drop spindle that I had a love hate relationship with. I ended up watching one of your videos and now I’m in love with drop spindles. After three months, I wanted to learn spinning on a wheel. the drop spindle is fun to take with me when we travel. Yesterday was my 65th Birthday. My husband for our 19th anniversary and my birthday I received one of the best gifts ever! and your video helped me to feel confident. Ive watched it three times and I am now spinning. I’m not sure about the fiber. yet it just keeps thinning out then it just tears off so I’m working on that today. I just wanted to say Thank You❤ so much for your channel and helping me to accomplish what I’ve wanted to do.
Found a lovely old wheel today while out at a yard sale today. Have wanted to learn how to use one for years! Thanks for the great intro, can't wait to use it!
I can’t wait to begin. I have inherited my late Moms Kromski wheel! I miss her and wish she was here to teach but she is happy I’m trying I’m certain. Thank you for a great first look at spinning for me!!
Evie, thank you so much for these videos! My other half bought me an old Ashford spinning wheel for my 40th in February and despite watching all the tutorials I could find, and reading books, I’ve been too nervous to get started. Now, having binge watched yours, I’m ready to get stuck in on my spinning journey! Thank you so much, Eve
I have been fascinated by flax and linen for years. I know that good flax is expensive and difficult to find in the US, so I'm going the route if growing my own. Extreme? .... Maybe? So double drive is most likely the route I will be taking. These videos are priceless for the information they provide, but that's not the best part. Your enthusiasm makes my interest stay intact. Thank you so much for the motivation. It may take some time, but your weaving videos will be on replay when I get that far.😅
What a great video. Nice, clear instructions and all done with a great "can do," attitude. Thank you for sharing. I'm off to card some will to start practicing.
Evie you are the absolute best! Thank you so much for taking the time to show us newbies how it's done. Even though my "wheel" is an electric eel which is wonderful for me, your tutorials are beyond helpful. I've spent several weeks watching your videos while waiting for my wheel to come! Well she is finally here and I was amazed at how easy it was for me to get started because you gave me the confidence to jump in. I love everything about this craft! Cant wait to finish up this first journey! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I am a newcomer to spinning. Your video took the fear out of this new journey. It's easy to follow, step by step, you have a delightful voice and I appreciate that you emphasized the need to practice each step rather than jumping immediately to fiber. Thank you so much!
Oh that is so exciting! I saw your spindle spinning on Instagram and it was looking fabulous. Those colors made me long for fall! I can't wait to see what else you spin up! 💜🧶

It has been 20 years since I have spun regularly, and this video reminded me of all the steps I had forgotten. Thanks! Excellent video.
I just got my first spinning wheel yesterday after desperately wanting one for 30 years. I’m looking forward to starting to use it for the wool I’m being given in September. Now thanks to your video I will be able to practice until then. Thank you so much, I look forward to watching the rest of your videos ❤
I got my first wheel yesterday too! Good luck with your practise and spinning! This is a very useful video, Evie is a great teacher.
Most helpful beginner video I have seen yet! Thank you!
Fantastic tutorial!! Thank you. I'm watching your videos today while I get to know my Ashford kiwi 1. You are the best spinning teacher on utube!!
Second video watched today...WOW you are an amazing teacher. Thank you 💖 not sure I'll ever spin, but I'll never stop learning. Almost 60 years of knitting or crocheting, have always wanted to spin, dye, weave, etc...
I love how you broke this down into baby steps. This is so helpful!
So grateful for your tutorials thank you
Dear Eve, Thank you for this video and the wonderful manner in which you teach. I just got my very first spinning wheel (Ashford Kiwi 3) and have not started spinning actual fiber. I am still in the practicing treadling and adjusting the tension and twist phase. I am following your instructions and I am very grateful for them. Please keep making videos for beginners.
You are so welcome!
This is the best beginning video I have seen! You explain things in an easy to understand way and I love the humor!
Yay! Thank you! Also, I'm a big goofball. Lol!
So wonderful! I wish you all the happiest spinning! 💕🧶😊
Lol
Well, not yet.
Thank you for making this seem easier than I was seeing before. 🥰🥰🥰😍
I will have to upload videos as I play with my wheel.
Thank you again!

Thank you! Thank you!
My wheel is coming tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be watching this video a million times. Thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I really appreciate it - my friend gifted me her spinning wheel and now I feel the need to learn!
Thank you.
You're a very clear teacher thank you. I've done some spinning but neglected it for a while. You have shown me where I was making mistakes. Thank you.
I'm so glad I could help! 💖🧶
Your video is fantastic, largely due to your delightful personality. I learned and am encouraged. Thank you.
i just found your videos. Thank you for the wonderful explanations especially all the wrong things that we do when we start spinning. I have had a wheel for 3 years now and am still unhappy with my spinning but i will go back to the beginning and practise all those tips you suggested. You are an inspiration to anyone beginning to spin.
This is a brilliant tutorial!! So helpful and you are an absolutely delightful teacher!
Crap yarn has character. Embrace it!
I love your tutorial. They are so clear amd easy to follow. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you for these videos! I have a new wheel and completed one class on spinning. I got so much benefit from your teaching style. Know we will be “lunching” together for a while!
Oh this is such a useful video! I'm a drop spinner thinking of getting a spinning wheel...the tension bit gave me such a laugh - hanging on to that fibre - oh I can see that happening to me big time 😂😂😂
Thank you so much! Starting to spin today on my home made e-spinner. Your video is very clear so now I think I can start practicing.
Lovely clear video, it makes me think I can do it. Thank you!
Fantastic! I'm so glad to help. Happy spinning!
I work at historic cold spring village as the weaver. They’ve been trying to get me to spin for 5 years and I’ve fought it. Your vid has me plying yarn for projects and now I’m actually spinning. THANKS
Wher can i get this Spinner
As a veteran spinner of 20 plus years I was very impressed with your technique and I plan to use it as a method to teach spinning. Thanks!
Thankyou so much I am 72 and just received a spinning wheel and I am anxious to get started I have been practicing treadling and now I am going to practice with practice yarn🤗
Just got my wheel...SO OVER THE MOON OMGGGGGAHHHH!!! this is so amazing! Will be watching this over and over!! Thank you!!!
I’ve neglected my wheel for a few years. Your tutorial is great. Needed a refresher and this was perfect.
I love your positive bubbly personality. Wish me luck lol. Thanks for the tutorials:)
Watching your video has inspired me to spin. ❤❤ I got my first spinning wheel today and have been playing this video on repeat and practicing.
You're an amazing teacher and your sweater is also very beautiful 😊
And the socks are nice, too!
Best video on getting started I've seen! 🔥
Thank you Evie…I learned to wheel and drop spindle spin from your videos. Why do I spin? Because I had an excellent teacher.
Oh wonderful! You can do it! Happy spinning 💕🧶
Oh thank you! This is the video I've been looking for. You teach the way i learn. And you're so patient. ❤
Happy, happy spinning fiber friend!!!! 🧶🐑💖
Thank you so much!!! I,ve just bought my first wheel and your videos are the best!!!!
I am so excited! I assembled my Ashford Kiwi two days ago and I started practicing my treadeling tonight!
This is gold. Thank you so much!!!!
I am a newcomer to spinning. Your video took the fear out of this new journey. It's easy to follow, step by step, you have a delightful voice and I appreciate that you emphasized the need to practice each step rather than jumping immediately to fiber. Thank you so much!
I’ve been spinning for a decade - nice video- well done. I love the new spinner comments. So much newly discovered magic.
Thank you. Just bought my wheel!!!
I love, love, love your videos! So well explained and informative. Thank you for helping me on my spinning journey!
This was so helpful! I just got my first spinning wheel last week and I am so so excited to get into it! Thank you for sharing.
((From Ashlee at SmashKnits))
Oh that is so exciting! I saw your spindle spinning on Instagram and it was looking fabulous. Those colors made me long for fall! I can't wait to see what else you spin up! 💜🧶
I just got my very first traditional ashford spinning wheel and I’m so excited! Just subscribed to your channel. Thank you so much!
You’re such a good teacher!
Becca recommended you. I'm so glad she did. There are gaps in my self-taught experiences that YOU! showed me. I'm looking forward to more of you very lucid lessons. 😊
