- Scared to death of public speaking? Here’s some practical advice from Dr. Anwesha Banerjee, a neuroscientist and distinguished public speaker. Dr. Banerjee says that while it is hard to get completely over the fear of doing something, it is not hard to get used to the fear so that it becomes a part of life and you stop paying attention to it. Stage fright is no different.
Bio: Dr. Anwesha Banerjee is a trained behavioral and molecular neuroscientist, currently working at Emory University, Atlanta. When asked why she chose to be a scientist, she says: “Probably my name, which in Sanskrit means ‘in search of knowledge’, decided my destiny many years ago. So, blame my parents.”
With expertise in the field of neurological disorders including autism, fragile X syndrome and Myotonic Dystrophy, she is currently conducting pioneering research to understand the underlying mechanism of cognitive impairments in Myotonic Dystrophy that severely affect a patient’s quality of life. Anwesha was the recipient of a Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation research fellowship in 2017. She has authored multiple publications and presented at national and international conferences.
Apart from science, she loves public speaking and has been an active member of Toastmasters International for over six years. What started as a side step for professional development has now become her passion. She is a Distinguished Toastmaster, which is the highest recognition given by Toastmasters International. An avid public speaker, she is well versed in facilitation, communication and leadership skills, winning various awards & commendations for her speeches and presentations. Brilliant delivery of the core message: Avoidance minimizes exposure, which only increases anxiety.
Make the component that intimidates you most routine to reduce its influence and enable you to focus on more compelling thoughts.
So realistic. For sure builds confidence , inspires people to get the energy to get up and be on stage. I really like the quote " Don't get over it, Get used to it.
thank you! Please share the video on with your friends and colleagues
Fear is the greatest motivator.
very true! well said
oh so true yes
I love how Anwesha combines her love of scary movies, neuroscience and public speaking to explain stage fright. I’m doing my best to live in the arena and not let fear hold me back and she is an inspiration!
I really enjoyed her talk.
I just started performing my music in 2021 and I must say that stage fright really gets to me, but I do it anyway. Thank you for your great talk!
Excellent presentation. I speak in front of large groups at work 3-4 times a week. Virtually no one will get up and speak because they are scared to death. The way I see it is; if all of them are afraid and I am the one speaking; by default, I am in a dominant position. This has translated to higher pay and privileges. I am so grateful to the people I speak to that I sincerely care about each and every one of them. I never put anyone on the spot or expose anyone. I come with love to deliver quality to my coworkers every day.
In about 35 minutes I will have to speak in front of my class. Previous time I had to, I burst out in tears..
But I feel like my practicing and this video will secure a better outcome this time🤍
How did it go?
This video's got a good message. There really is no way around stage freight, just embrace the fear and get used to it.
lol, not sure if I can
I have heard nerves means it's important.
Thank you so much. " Don't avoid it. Get used to it". Love you. 15 min of interesting speech
thank you for liking my speech!
I am not surprised coming from Anwesha.. so clear, generous, and powerful as usual. . " One thing I realize ...If I want to move ahead in life
I can not avoid public speaking... " communication is everything.. really pleased to know you are still commited to deliver this message since we enjoy and learn from you all of those days at the Richardson Evenings Toastmasters.. in Texas.. all the best Anwesha.. Namaste.

You're one of the sweetest girls in the world!. It was the most perfect, most realistic, honest motivation I've ever watched. That's how I beat it!: Constantly confronting the feared thing makes you immune to fear!. Think of the day you first drove and went out on the street! your hand is like your arm!.that's it!thanks!.
OMG!!!!! Anwesha, what an absolutely awesome job of public speaking. Great eye contact, humor, informative, encouraging, engaging, clarity, encouraging, and great stories. I really enjoyed your presentation.

Wowwww this is fabulous. Many many congratulations - that was indeed a terrific talk; excellent hand use for communication and owning the stage, and how amazing and easy examples you have used to communicate differences between amygdala and basal ganglia. As a scientist also you seem to be on the top of your game, Superb👌👌👌👌👌! Keep it up!
Thank you Anwesha D so much for liking the video.. Its all in the name ;)
thank you mam for the wonderful talk. after hearing you i recalled my disasterous experience of public speaking, it was my first experience so i had some butterflies in my stomach, but when i started i went blanked.rather than giving up i decided to face that. And as a result, today i can at least present my self in front of the crowd.
Great talk! Great way of looking at it!
I love this, thank you!!
This is cool n motivational! Nice👏👏👏
I have a mentor. I’m not a special person with a special degree or experience other than some 3 years in the military before getting disabled. My mentor is pushing me to follow my dreams. One of them is to be a motivational speaker, another is to play music with and for others, another is acting. They all require learning how to deal with fear. The military messed me up physically and mentally but I’m overcoming it all by preserving and having hope. I looked up “stage fright” because I realized it wasn’t just on the stage but when I procrastinated doing a task or performing a responsibility. The same fears were present. Your video is the best I’ve seen so far. And I’m making notes and quoting you in my notes because one day I’m going to have you as one person to thank for my “getting out there!” Thank you for bringing so much of yourself to this speech. Your personality made the message so much easier to digest.
Thank you so much for your wonderful words. I am confident that you will be able to overcome your stagefright. It is a process. Best wishes

The good Doctor got this right.
Thank you for watching Samuel!
I had stage fright in the middle of a speech and felt like I had an injection of adrenaline, it was a nightmare. But 2 years into my career I spoke in front of crowds of 100 to 200 people regularly and never gave it a 2nd thought.
Never understood what had changed.
I wish I was like you
What is your job?
Brilliant!!!
Thank you Aliyah for watching
Brilliant
Wow... excellent analogies 👏👏👏

Thank you! Please share the video on with your friends and colleagues
The summery: Practise!
I have an extreme level of stage fear, while speaking in front of people my heart beats faster, my legs shake, i panic , i stutter and at the end i almost cry , i haven't watched the vedio yet but hopefully this helps me
Don't get used to it! Get rid of it or minimize it using EFT tapping or other emotional freedom technics.
Wow it terrifies me.
It's a great presentation ,
Thank you Vishnu!
@@anweshabanerjee5503 you are always welcome, ... Please upload more videos like development of soft skills...
I really hate talking to people, I am terrified I will try this.
Thanks Jane for watching! Do try a few times and let me know if the fear is getting lesser.
Oh do I know the fear of speaking....
yes we all face it.. but we can get used to it :)
haha me too
Sounds like I'm on the phone with customer service
What a crass and bigoted comment. Here is someone who has overcome her fears and succeeded yet all your almond shaped amygdala can come up with is this?!?! Mastering more than one language is a gift!
Well done Anwesha! You nailed it! Such an important message delivered so well. A very complicated concept, which you have managed to simplify so beautifully! Congratulations!
and you are the best!!! :D :D
